v This' inveiltion relates to an improved pad to be used for polishing and cleaning varnished 'surfaces'and metal surfaces and for producing a glossy finish thereon, and further 6 relates to the method of making the pad.

It is well known that in compounds and liquid preparations heretofore used in clean ing and polishing metal surfaces, the fact that they contain benzine or gasoline, renders them 10 dangerous andobjectionable in use. Some ofthem, while serving to clean the metal surfaces, leave the same liable to corrosion, and do not produce a polish thereon.

The\clevice hereinafter desribed is convenient, and particularly rapid in its action, and is particularly free from corrosive effect.

The drawing illustrates a form of this invention which I have found to be desirable in use.

In the drawing, the figure is a'perspective view of a polishing pad constructed in accordance with my invention.

In the fabrication of this polishing pad, I first take a quantity of horn material, preferably deer horns, and bake them with a heat,

and then powder them. Tothis horn material, I add powdered squid shell (designated by some as cuttle-bone) and to these ingredients I add powdered pumice stone; the proportions being: powdered horn, one part; powdered squid shell, two parts; and powing these ingredients, I add a'quantity of gelatin, and again mix the same thoroughly into a paste. I then take a quantity of animal hair and cut the. same into suitable lengths, and mix it with the gelatin paste. I

- then compress the same, and, after suitable drying, I cut the hair felt compound into suitable pads.

In use, the pad is dipped into .water, and,

The hair ingredient serves to retain the other ingredients ina relative mass orform, and the homogeneous pad thus formed efliciently cleans and polishes, and gives a more lustrous. finish, than can be obtained with ordinary cleaners, and the rubbing afterward-with cloth or chamois skin.

The olishing pad thus fabricated, contains no aci s, benzine, naptha, or alkaline ingredients, andwill not injure the hands of the user. In addition, the gelatine and other smoothing ingredients such as the powdered squid shell, deposit on the polished surface, an exceedingly thin film'or co'at whish pre- 7! serves the metal from corrosion. No limitation is made to the form of the pad shown in the drawing, as the same may be made any size or form desired without departing from the spirit of the invention. 80

What is claimed is:

l. A polishing pad, consisting of a body of hairfelt having holes extending laterally therethrough, and polishing ingredients iiolmogeneously compounded with the hair e t. 2. A polishing pad, including-a body}. of hair felt, anda compound incorporated therein, consisting of powdered horn; one part, powdered squidshell, two parts, powdered 00 pumice stone, seven part-s, -and gelatin.

3. The herein desrribed composition of matter fabricated into a polishing pad,-.con-. sisting of animal haircut into short lengths, gelatin, powdered horn, powdered squid shell,

and powdered pumice. stone, combined, substantially in the manner and in the proportions stated.
