METAL BOX.

This invention relates to receptacles adapted to receive ashes and stumps of c1- gar's, cigarettes and like lltter of tobacco dbris. n
It is one of the objects of the present .1nvention to provide an ash receptacle having a single opening and a support in which the receiver is detachably engaged.

While such devices are particularl designed for use within automobiles an. cars of the better grade, as in accordance with the requirements of the laws of certain States relative to iire hazards; their utilization 1s of a far wider scope, as within the household or ofiice, where neatness is observed.
These several features of invention are effectually accomplished bv the novel and practical construction an arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, constituting a material portion of this disclosure, and in Fig. 1, is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the invention, showing the application. 0

Referring more in detail to the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 show the device as attached to an ordinary wind shield, designated by the character X, or any other solid upright surface whatever, by means of suckers, generally indicated by thenumeral 10.
These suckers are preferably used in airs, one below the other and are composed oirubber, soft leather or other like pliable, elastic, air-impermeable material molded to produce a circular body having a concave face 1l and convex rearsurface 12, its thin edge yielding under pressure as it is forced against a plane surface, causing the face to' flatten as shown in Fig. 2.
A neck 13 integrally connects a button head 14, either round or sli htly elliptical, havling a curved edge exten ing beyond the neo A holder or support is composed of a thin metallic plate 15, an oblong rectangle in protile, having cut out openings 16 near its ends, the sides and upper edges of the openings being sheared and bent to produce lugs 17 suited to receive the sucker buttons 14,
permitting the necks 13 to extend outwardly between the in-turned edges of the lugs and thus firmly suport the suckers in position for attachment.
The lower edge of the support 15 is bent at a right angle outwardly presenting a ledge 18 having a downwardly curved lip 19 at its extremity and the side 'edges of the ledge are bent up to form guides 20.
ln a similar manner the upper end of the plate 15 is bent forwardly constituting a cover 21 having an opening 22 and provided with down reaching guides 23' at its sides.
A box-like container 24 is composed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to produce four upright walls and a bottom, the container being entirely open at the top and of such dimensions as to agree with the support plate 15 and enter snugly between the ledge 18 and cover 21 of the holder.
A protuberance 25 forced outwardly from the bottom wall of the container is adapted to engage in a corresponding opening 26 in the ledge 18 centrally near its front, and upon placing the container on the ledge, as indicated in Fig. 2, the container can be swung backward between the guides 23, the ledge 18 and cover 21 being sufficiently resilient to permit such action.
In order to secure the container positively to the support, protuberances 27 are formed on the side walls of the container, the same snap engaging in perforations 28 in the guides '23, thereby retaining the parts in assembled position.
ln the modification shown in Fig. 8, a support plate 15 is used in the manner described but in place of the suckers, the plate is sheared and bent to produce pairs of loops 30 to receive the straight horizontal portion 31 of the bar pins, one end of the bars being bent reentrantly as at 32, the inreaching elements 34 extending to the center of the plate and then directed outwardly for some distance to constitute pins 35.
lt will be understood that this arrangement is adapted to engage with an upholstered or yielding surface on which the sucker devices are not applicable:
Obviously the devices may be placed Wherever most convenient and will adhere until forcibly removed; however the container is-instantly releasable or replaceable at will, and when in operative posit-ion is easily accessible to receive ashes and like refuse.
Although the foregoing is descriptive of the prefered embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that minor changes may be made in its construction, without the exercise of invention or conflicting with the scope of the claim hereto appended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
An oblong rectangular box composed O sheet metal open at the top, a support plate at the rear, said'plate having upper and lower forwardly extending elements to engage the top and bottom of the box, the upperA element containing an ovoidal opening leading to the interior of the box and the lower' element having an outturned edge and being provided with a depression, a node on the bottom wall of said box to resiliently engage in the mentifoned depression, flanges on both of saidplate elements to embrace the sides of said box, the flanges on said upper elements hav- "ing perforations, and corresponding projections on the side walls of said box to engage in the perforations of said flanges.
