UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

PAPER BOX.
' Application filed July 8,
. and upon delivery considerable labor is required for the removal of the individual packages from such box. Furthermore, in
the individual packaged article it is imposv sible to group the same whereby a group of such artlcles may be held intact either for the exhibit of the packaged articles or for expediting the handling thereof when packing and unpacking the same. When the articles are individually packaged and placed within or upon a show case or other holder for exhibiting the same, there is re uired a separate placard or display card to e associated with the packages which ordinarily becomes separated ormisplaced with respect to the packaged articles on'display.
It is the aim of the present invention to construct a box, carton or the like wherein individually packaged articles can be nested in a group so that the said grouped packaged articles can be placed on display as a unit and when a sale of an article is had the a packaged one can be removed from the group without disturbingthe remaining ones in the nest. The nesting box, carton or the'like,
carries a placard or flap designed to bear advertising matter relatlng to. the packa ed group of articles therein, which placard or ap 1s separable corres ondingly to the points of separation of the box, carton or the like, so that a portion of the placard or flap on sepa- -tion of an individual packged article from the group remains a part of the separated section of the unit carrying the individual packaged article.
The invention mainly comprises a box, carton or the like, for the nesting or grouping of packaged articles therein and which may be separated along scored or weakened lines into sections carrying individual packaged articles of the group, the box, carton or the like being formed from paper and foldable with a placard or dis lay tab constituting a unitary part thereo the said placard or tab being separable correspondingly to the sections,
and the separable portions of the placard or 1927. Serial No. 204,164.
construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended. a y In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the box, carton or the like constructed in accordance wlith the invention, shown in position on disp ay.
'Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the box, carton or the like showing by full lines the placard or tab in lowered position and by dotted-lines in upright or raised position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the packagedindividual articles within the body of the box, carton or the like.
Figure 4 is an end elevation showing the box, carton or the like'folded flat.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the' drawing in detail, the invention comprises generally a tubular formed.
body A and a placard or tab B, these being either stifl' paper, cardboard or the like, al-
though the same may be made from any other suitable or desirable material. The piece of material in blank form is preferably of substantially rectangular shape and in the main is folded to provide the body A, with bottom 5, top 6, front 7 and back 8, respectively, these following. the folds 9 effected by suitable weakened or creased lines common to foldable box structures of the paper kind.
The placard or tab B is formed by an exhinged or swingingly associated with the body. A through the medium of-a crease or fold 11. The back 8 of the body A is joined to the extension 10 providing the placard or tab B by an overlap 12, which is pasted or otherwise secured to the rear face of the extension 10 following the fold or crease 11' between the lattenand the top 6 of the body A. The body A is capable of nesting a group of individual packaged articles oi any preferable number, each article containing package being exemplified at 13, the body 10 being open at opposite ends so that the article contained packages 13 can be introduced therein from either open end, as will be clearly apparent.
Formed transversel inthe body A through the bottom 5, top 6, ront 7 and back 8, including the overlap .12, are score or weakened lines 14, these being spaced apart correspondingly to the points of separation of the packages 13 containing the articles when placed within the body A so that when it is desired to separate an individual packaged article from the group, the body A can be broken along the weakened or score lines 14 between the package to be separated and the adjacent package of the group within the body A, thus eliminating the necessity of pushing the group of packages from within the body so that an individual packaged article may be procured or had. I The placard or tab B 'forined by the exten:
sion 10 has score or'iweakened lines 15 form ing continuations of the score or weakened lines 14 in the bodyA so that when a section of the body A is separated a corresponding section of the placard or tab B will be simulmatter. relating to th'e' packaged articles grouped within the body A in the display of the grouped packaged articles, and likewise the separable sections v16 of the body A between thefscore or weakened lines 14 therein on selected or all outer faces thereof may contain advertising matter for the packaged articles within the body A. Where advertising matter is employed upon the tab B, it is desirable that the advertising matter between adjacent weakened portions 15 shall be com- 15l'ete individually so that each separable section shall contain a completeadvertisement and the severance of one section does not operate to spoil the advertising effect or the utility of the balance of the article. Of course it is optional with the user of the box, carton or the like hereinbefore described, to
have the body A and the placard or tab B contafin advertising matter and the nature there- 0 The box, carton or the like, including the body A and the'placard or tab B, is normally folded flat in the position shown in Figure 4 of the drawing and said body A can be. readily set up by the unfolding'to the positions shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, and likewise the tab or placard can be lowered on v to the body A as shown in Figure 2 or raised to the position shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing, for display purposes.
It is to be understood, of course, that the -1. As an article of manufacture, a box com- I prising a foldable body having opposite opened ends, provided with weakened portions between said ends for separation of the body into sections, and a display placard forming a continuation of the body and having weakened portions coincident with the weakened portions of the body,'said display placard havin advertising matter arranged thereon in sue a way that severance of one of said sections does not interrupt the con tinuity of the remainder.
2. .As an article of manufacture, a box comprising a foldable body having opposite opened ends, provided with weakened portions between said ends for separation of the body into sections, and a display placard forming a continuation of the body and having weakened portions coincident with the weakened portions of the body, said body and placard being formed from a single piece of material, said display placard having advertising matter arranged thereon in such away that severance of one of said sections does not interrupt the continuity of the remainder.
3. A box of the kind described comprising a fold'able bodyformed from a single piece of material longitudinally creased to provide a bottom, top, front and back, and an extension on the top forming a placard and foldableon to said top,-theoback of the body being joined with the extension, being separable into sec-- tions and saidbody and extension-having": 1 score lines coincident with each other transverselyv thereof at spaced intervals apart, i
said display placard having advertising matter arranged thereon in such a way that severance of one of said sections does not interrupt the continuity of the remainder.
4. An article of the class described comprising a box portion adapted for reception of articles for sale, said box portion having weakened portions between adjacent articles sections of the box portion, each of said placand dividing the box portion into sections, ard sections containing advertising matter and a placard extending from said box porcomplete in itself.
