IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,314, dated November 23, 1875; application filed September 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, FRIEDERICH TODT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Im proved Butt-Hinge, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side View, Fig. 2 an end view, of my improved butt-hinge, and Figs. 3 and 4 the detached parts or wings of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved butthin ge for doors of all kinds, by which the same are raised when being opened, and closed by their own weight, dispensing thereby with the threshold, which admits the more convenient laying of carpets and improves the appearance ot' the rooms.
The invention consists of a butt-hinge made ot' a wing-plate with a spindle and fixed inclined washer, on which the correspondinglyinclined sleeve yend of the other wing-plate slides, raising thereby the door.
In the drawing, A represents the Wing-plates of a butt-hinge for doors, of which the sleeve A of the lower plate attached to the doorframe is provided with a stationary spindle, B, to which an inclined Washer, C, of hard metal is rigidly fastened. The washer C rests on the similarly-inclined sleeve A', and forms the bearing for the correspondingly-inclined sleeve end ot' the upper washer attached to the door.
The opening of the door produces the raising of the door to the height or rise of the inclination of the washer, so that the bottom edge of the door clears the carpet without frictionand resistance by the same.
The door closes automatically by means of the inclined washer, and may be kept in open position by a suitable spring-catch, or equivalent device.
The advantage of the hinge is obvious, as it allows the laying of carpet-s from one room to another on an even surface without necessitating sills or thresholds as at present.
