The present invention relates to apparatus toi-piling sheets, and inter-posing at intervals between a series of sheets, a sheet of a different character. `For example in the 6 manufacture oi tablets, sheets oli paper may be ruled and deposited in a lay-boy or other Apiling mechanism, and at intervals backing sheets ot card-board can be deposited in the lav-boy, thus creating a pile that may be lo aiiterivards formed into completed tablets. lt will be understood that it is not limited to the above specific example, but may be employed in various Ways well known to those skilled in the art. p

A cross'shaft 47 is provided, having worms 48 that mesh with the worm gears 46 (see Fig. 10). On this cross shaft 47 is fixed a ratchet wheel 49 (see Figs. 9 and 10). Loosely j ournaled on the shaft 47 alongside'the ratchetwheel 49 is a swinging pawl carrier 50, on the upper end of which is vpivotally mounted a pawl 51 that operates on the ratchet wheel 49. This pawl carrier has va depending portion provided with a pin 52 that'is engaged in the'slot 53 of a flink 54.V This link has mounted atv its other vend a crank pin 55 carried by a constantly Y rotating crankv disc 56.V The pawl carrier Y clear from Figure 3, when the pile of sheets on the table is sufficiently high, the arm 62 will be elevated, thereby swinging the detent armi 58 to a position beneath the Y,stop finger 57. The pawl carrier therefore will have noy active movement and the link 54 will slide freely on the pin 52. In the conduit 65 at the first feeder is a controlling valve 69, shown particularly in Figures 1 and 7. This valve is preferably of the type disclosed in my former Patent, No. 1,408,688, dated March 7, 1922, and consists of a casing 70, through which the air passageway 71 passes. In this casing is a reciprocatory valve member 72 having a suitable port 73 that is movable into and out of alinement with the passageway 71 to permit or stop the flow of air therethrough. The valve member 72 in this structure is connected by a link 7 3a with one arm 74 of a bell crank element pivotally mounted, as shown at 75, and having its other arm 76 arranged in depending relation and limited in its movement in one direction by a sto 77. A ratchet wheel 78, journaled on the rst feeder 15, is provided with a sprocket wheel 79, around which passes a sprocket chain 80 that operates around a lower idler sprocket wheel 81. On this sprocket chain are mounted one or more lugs 82 that are adapted to engage the arm 76 and swing the same, thereby swinging the crank arm and moving the valve. The ratchet wheel 78 is engaged by a pawl 83 carried by an arm 84, and this arm has a link connection 85 with an eccentric. strap 86, and surrounding an eccentric 87, preferably mounted on one of the cutter rolls of the first machine.
It will be evident by reference to Figure 7 that upon the cutting and delivery of each sheet by the first feeder, the s rocket wheel 78 will have one increment o movement and the sprocket chain will be given a corresponding movement. Therefore at intervals a lug 82 will engage the arm 76, and consequently the valve will be elevated to open the conduit 65 to the suction side of the pump 66. When this occurs the suction roller of the interleaving feeder will be made active so that a sheet will be fed thereby.
It is believed that the operation of the apparatus can now be made clear. Sheets are successivel and continuously fed from the first fee er and successively passed through the ruling mechanism 22 and are delivered by the tangent conveyer members 26 and the interposed guideway 31 to the lay-boy 21. At predetermined intervals the suction roller of thc interleaving feeder will Vbe actuated as above described', whereu on the sheet will be fed therefrom and wil be directed by the lower guideway 32 to the second conveyor member 26 so as to be delivered thereby into the lay-boy. It is relatively immaterial whether the sheets from the first feeder and the second feeder meet and overlap at the entrance end of the conveyor 34 for said conveyor will carry all to the lay-boy 21. The consequence is that a certain number of ruled sheets will first be delivered, then a sheet, as for example a backing sheet of a tablet will be placed on the pile, after which another series of ruled sheets will be delivered and so on until a stack or pile has been produced. Obviously the number of sheets can be varied vand dif-- ferent combinations readily obtained.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it willbe understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details oi' construction may be restorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any oi the advantages of the invention.
What I claim, is: i
l. In apparatus `for interleaving sheets, the combination with means for conveying sheets in successive order and in an edgewise direction, and mechanism for introducing other sheets periodically and in anv edgewise direction between a plurality of the sheets thus conveyed.
2. In apparatus for interleaving sheets, the combination with means for conveying sheets in successive order and in an edgewise direction, and mechanism beneath the path of said sheets for introducing other sheets periodically and in an edgewise direction between a plurality oi the sheets thus conveyed. i

In apparatus for interleaving sheets, the combination with a sheet conveyor, ol means for feeding sheets successively thereto, a sheet holding means beneath the path ofthe sheets, a' suction roller for removing sheets from the sheet holding moans and interposing them between sheets ucarried. by the conveyor, means for creating suction in said roller, a valve controlling said suction, and means for operating the valve in predetermined timed relation to the sheets moved by the conveyor.
7. In apparatus for interleaving sheets, the combination with a sheet piling mechanism, of means for delivering sheets successively to the piling mechanism, and mechanism located below the sheet delivering means for periodically delivering sheets to a position to be interposed between a predetermined number ot' the sheets delivered to the piling mechanism by said means.
8. In apparatus for interleaving sheets, the combination with a lay boy, ,olf means for conveying sheets successively to the lay boy, and means in advance oli' the lay boy and beneath the conveying means for periodically delivering sheets to be deposited in the lay boy between the sheets conveyed thereto by the conveying means.`
9. In apparatusfor interleaving sheets, the .combination with a lay boy, of sheet conveying mechanism 'that delivers thereto, means for feeding i sheets successively to the conveyor, means for supporting a pile of sheets between the feeding means and lay boy, and means for periodically delivering sheets carried by thesupporting means to the conveying mechanism to be delivered thereby to the lay boy between the sheets delivered by the conveying mechanismlrom the feeding means. i

In apparatus for interleaving sheets, the combination with a lay boy, of sheet conveying `mechanism that delivers thereto, means for feeding` sheets `successively to the conveyor, avertically movable sheet supporting table beneath the conveying means and between the feeding means andthe lay boy, means for periodically delivering sheets carried by the table to the conveyingmechanism to be delivered thereby to the lay boy between the sheetsdelivered by the conveying mechanism from the feeding means, and Vmeans for automatic-ally elevating the table as the sheets are delivered therefrom.

In apparatus for interleaving sheets, the combination with a lay boy, of sheet conveying mechanism that delivers thereto, means for feeding sheets successively to the conveyor, a vertically movable sheet supporting table beneath the conveying means and between the feeding means and the lay boy, a rotary suction roller for periodically delivering sheets carried by the table to the conveying mechanism to be delivered thereby to the lay boy between the sheets delivered by the conveying mechanism from the feeding means, means for automatically elevating the table as the sheets are delivered therefrom',and means controlled by the first feeding means for periodically creating suction in the suction roller'. c

vthe combination with a sheet piling mechanism, of a sheet feeder, a conveyor for delivermgsheets from the feeder tothe pilingv mechanism, a second lsheet feederbetween the first feeder and the sheet piling mechanism and including a suction roller that delivers sheets to the sheet piling mechanism,

In apparatus for interleaving sheets, the combination with a sheet piling mechanism, of a sheet feeder, a conveyor for delivering vsheets fromthe feeder to the piling mechanism and comprising members arranged end to yend and alguideway` ferdirecting sheets from the first to the second conveyor member, a second sheet feeder beneath the conveyor and having means for deliveringsheetsbetween the conveyor members, and a guidewa between the members for directing the sheets from the second feeder to the second conveyor member.

In apparatus for interleaving sheets, the combination with a sheet piling mechanism, of a sheet feeder, a conveyor for delivering sheets from the feeder to the piling mechanism and comprising members arranged end to end, convergent guides between the members, one of said ruides directing sheets from the first to tie second member, and sheet feeding means delivering sheets to the other guide to be thereby directed to the second member.

In apparatus for interleavin sheets, the combination with a lay-boy, o a sheet feeding mechanism, a conveyor for carrying sheets from the feeding mechanism to the lay-boy and comprising s aced conveying members, guides between t ie members, one of' said guides directing sheets from the first to the second member, a. sheet feeding means including a suction roller that delivers sheets to the other guide and said latter guide directing the sheets to the second member, and means for periodically causing the suction roller to become active.

In apparatus for interleavin sheets, the combination with a lay-boy o a sheet feeding mechanism, a conveyor or carrying sheets from the feeding mechanism tx) the layboy, and com )rising s aced conveying members, guides etween tie members, one of said guides directing sheets from the first to the second member, a sheet feeding means including a suction roller that delivers sheets to the other guide and said latter guide directing the sheets to the second member, a suction conduit connected to the roller, a valve in said` conduit, and means operating with the first feeder for periodically o erating the valve to permit suction throng the conduit and roller.
