GOLF-BALL CLEANER.
Application filed June 1, 1928, Serial No. 882,118, and in Great Britain November 1, 1927.
This invention relates to portable cleaners for golf balls of the type including a rubber receptacle and a cleaning device, such as a sponge.
The invention consists broadly in an 1mproved portable cleaner comprisin a doublewalled cup of which the inner an the outer walls define awater jacket for the rece tlon of cleaning water and of which the inner wall defines a cavity for. the reception of a for the reception of cleaning water.
sponge or the like, there being formed in the inner wall at least one orifice erm1tt1n outflow of cleaning water from t e water acket to the sponge or the like and permitting the return inflow of water from the sponge or the like to the wa ter jacket.
In the accompanying drawings, F1 1 1s a section and Fig. 2 a plan of a go f ball cleaner constructed in accordance wlth the invention. Fig. 3 is a section of a modification including a rigid housing for the cup and Fig. 4 a section showing a modification including a wire frame which serves to render the outer wall of the cover rigid.
The golfball cleaner shown comprises a double-walled cup of which the outer wall 1 and the inner wall 2 define a water jack eithii inner wall 2 defines a receptacle for a sponge 4 or the like. 5 denotes an orifice permitting the outflow of water from the jacket 3 to the sponge 4 or the like and the return inflow of excess water from the sponge 4 or the like to the jacket 3. Formed on the inner wall 2' is a flange 6 which serves to retain the sponge or the like within the receptacle. 7 denotes a perforated tab throu h which a flexible retaining member may e passed for attach ment to a golf bag or the like.
According to the modification illustrated in Fig. 3, there is fitted overthe cup a rigid housing 8 of which the function 1s to prevent accidental pressure on the cup from the outside. v
According to the modification illustrated in Fig. 4, there is fitted within the water jacket a wire frame 9 which servesto render rigid the outer wall 1 of the cup and thus to prevent deformation of the outer wall by pressure applied from the outside.
' In practice, when a golf ball is to be cleaned the ball is pressed forcibly against the sponge or the like, whereby the wall 2 is distended and water is caused to flow from the jacket 3 into the sponge or the like. When the pressure on the sponge or the like is released the excess water returns through the orifice 5 to orifice permitting the outflow of water from' the said water jacket to said sponge or the like and the return inflow of excess water from said sponge or the like to said water acket.
2. A portable golf ball cleaner comprising a rubber" cup having outer and inner walls defining between them a water jacket for the reception of cleaning water and the inner wall defining a receptacle for a sponge or the like, said inner wall having at least one orifice permitting the outflow of water from the said water jacket to said sponge or the like and the return inflow ofexcess water from said sponge or the like to said water jacket, and being formed with a flange servmg to retain the. sponge or the like in said receptacle.
3. A portable golf ball cleaner comprising a rubber cup having outer and inner walls defining between them a water jacket for the reception of cleaning water and the inner wall defining receptacle for a sponge or the like, said inner wall having at least one orifice permitting the outflow of water from the said water jacket to said sponge or the like and the return inflow of excess water from said sponge or the like to said water jacket, and said outer wall being provided with a periorated tab.
4. A portable golf ball cleaner comprising a rubber cup havingouter and inner walls defining between them a water jacket for the reception of cleaning water and the inner wall defining a receptacle for a s onge or the like, said inner wall having at east one orifice permitting the outflow of water from the said water jacket to said sponge or the like and the return inflow of excess water from said sponge or the like to said water permitting the outflow of water from the said 10 jacket, and a wire frame inserted in the water Water jacket to said sponge or the like and Jacket to render said outer wall rigid. the return inflow of excess water from said 5.
