In the rough handling of golf club bags both in use or durlng transportation the heads of the shorter clubs strike against the shafts of the longer clubs and injure them so that they become bruised and the cord wrappings become torn and itis the object of the present invention to provide a shield of leather or other suitable material to surround and protect the shafts of the lon er clubs from such in'ur.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the golf club shaft protector as herein claimed and all equivalents.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in different views,

This tubular guard or protector 12 lies partly within the bag and extends above a suflicient dis-ta ce to cover the range of the heads of the shorter clubs which are placed in the bag as usual and serves to prevent the heads of such shorter clubs from en'- gaging the shanks or shafts of the longer clubs which are placed within the protector. The leather protector may be formed from a sheet of leather with its edges laced, stitched or riveted together to form the tubular guard and may be riveted or otherwise connected to. a supporting member 14, which may also be of leatherand which has-riveted to it the spring clips 13. The preferred method of mounting the protector is shown wherein the supporting member fits within the mouth of the bag 10 and the spring clips 13 arch over the rim of the bag and bear against the outside thereof. The spring clips preferably consist of spring tongues mounted on attaching plates 15, which are riveted to the outside of the member 14.

This protector may be readily attached within the mouth of any golf bag and then constitutes a separate holder'for receiving the longer shaft clubs, while the shorter clubs areplaced in the mouth of the bag as usual. The leather sleeve or protecting guard prevents the heads of the shorter clubs from striking the shafts of the longer clubs and thus protects the latter from injury.

lVhat I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent is: I

1. A golf club protector comprising a sheet of sole leather having its edges laced togetherto form a tubular sleeve, a supleather riveted theretmattaching plates riveted to the outside of the supporting member on either side of the tubular sleeve and spaced therefrom, and inverted U-shaped spring tongues secured to the, attaching plates to form spring clips with their free ends outwardly bent and pressed toward the attaching plates to arch over the rim of the golf bag and bear against the outside thereof.
