WINDOW-CLEANER APPLIANCE.
`Applicati'mn led March 9 This invention relates to an improved window cleaner appliance, and an object of the invent-ion is to provide, in a device of this character, a reciprocating member or rod and a casing therefor containing an electrical operating means operatively connected with the reciprocating member or rod for imparting movement to the latter, said reciprocating member or rod adapted to carry on its extremity-an implement for cleaning a window, more especially show windows and the like.
Another purpose. is to provide a plurality of implements, by which a window may be washed or mopped, wiped and finally polished, there being the provision of means on said implements common to them all for attaching them individually to the end of the reciprocating member or rod.
Still another purpose is to provide a polishing implement which includes a base with a rubber facing, against which a chamois skin or leather polisher engages, the polisher being transferable from one roller to another (which rollers are carried by the base of the implement) so as to change the polishing surt face of the polisher when applying the fin ishing touches to the window. p
A further purpose is to provide a handle. for the casing (which carries the operating mechanism), said handle adapted to include several tubular connectors between the casing and the handle, the connectors being of different lengths, so as to provide handles Cil ' stance, in cleaning a large window a long handle would be necessary to reach the top of the window, and then as the cleaning process merges toward the bottom shorter handles are necessary.
A still further for holding the of differentlengths for the casing. For in? 1927. 'sei-iai No. 173,990.
and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the draivings:
Figure lhis a view in elevation of the in1- proved window cleaning appliance constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the casing in section.
Figure Z-is a view in side elevation also showing the casing in section, and illustrating a connector for the handle and the casing, illustrating the bayonet slots and pin connec tions.
Figure Skis an enlarged view in elevation showing the construction of the polishing implement and how it connects with the reciprocating member or rod.
.Figure 4-is a sectional view on line l-fi of Figure 3.
Figure --is aI Isectional view on line 5--5 of VFigure 3.
Figure 6--is a view showing the manner of attaching the mop or brush to the endof the reciprocating member or rod.
Figure 7-is a View showing a wiper attached to the end of the reciprocating member or rod.
`Referring to the drawings: 1 identifies a casing, in which is mounted an electric motor 2 the o eratine' shaft of which is mounted in suitable bearings lonthe interiorof the casing. This shaft 3 carries a pinion 5 nicshing with a gear (i having its shaft 7 mounted in bearings 8 on the interior of the casing. A suitable door 9 is hinged at l() to the casing l, and is provided for the purpose of permitting access to the interior of the casing for making any repairs to the electric motor or gears, or to `a connecting rod or pitman 1l. This pitman 11 is eccentrically connected or pivoted at 12 to the gear 6 and in turn pivotally connected at 13 to a rod 14, `which operates through ball bearings 15 positioned within a tubular extension 16 of the ci `sing- 1. The eX- posed extremity of the reciprocating rod or member 14 carries either the mop, washer or scrubber, the wiper or the polishing implement.
The casing l. has a tubular extension 17 at its other end, which interiorly carries wires 18 extending from the motor to a conventional type of switch 1.9, and the wires from the motor to an approved type` of plug Q0. These latter' wires 2l as well as the wires-18 are encased in a suitable casing orinsulator;
' tra-l ears" and the openings The tubular extension 17 operatively connects with a handle 22 by means ot' a tubular connector 23. The opposite ends of the connector 23 have ybayonet slots 24 and 25, which engage with pins 26 and 27 of the handle 22 andtthe tubular extension 17 .Y
The exposed end of the reciprocating member or rod terminates in a fork 28 the prongs `of which have a transverse connecting bar 29 and also a transverse connecting tube 30. The tube 3() connects the extremities of the prongs, while the bary 29 connects the prongs adjacent where they merge into the rod 14.
.Referring to Figure 3 in particular a holder 311 having a polishing member 32is provided. 1 This holderconsists of a wooden base 33 which. has a rubber facing 34',`and secured to the Ybase 33 are side plates 35. These side plates have ears 36' provided with openings 37 and 38, the openings 37 being in the ceni 38 beingformed in the endl ears.V Suitable rollers with relatively large flanges are positioned between the end ears of; the holder; The rollers 39 and 40 have their cores hollow, and connecting the rollers isa chamois skin or leather polishing member 41. This member 41 is adapted to be rolled romone rollerto the other, in order to change rits face which may contact w-ith the Window to be polished. VSui-table leaf springs 42 are secured at 43 to the wooden base of the holder, and the extremities of the leaf springs bear against theV face of the chamois skin or leather which is wound about the rollers, thereby acting to keep the rollers ,n from turning, .when the polisher is in action on the face of the window.
Secured to the. side plates are leaf springs `44 having knobs or plugs 45, which engage through the openings 37 and 3S ofthe vears,36.- These knobs or plugs not only pass through the openings 37 and 38, but also extend telescopically into theV tubular cores of the rollers and the tubular connecting rod 30.
The knobs or plugs of the central springs 44 connect the holder to the prongs 28, while the plu s or knobs of the end leaf springs 44 extend into the cores of the rollers to journal the latter in position.` Plates 46 are secured tothe springs 44 and engage through slots 47 inthe plates, Yand the lateral ends o'f the plates 46 act to limit the lateral movement of the v pass through leaf springs 44 by preventing them from being moved outwardly too far, when extricating. the plugs or knobs from the the rollers vor ,from the tubular rod 30.
Asshown in Figures 6 and 7 there is a mop or scrubber and a wiper disclosed. Each of these is provided with ears 43, which engage exteriorly of the prongs 28 at their extremities, and carried by the ears are leaf springs 49 provided with plugs or knobs 50, which openings 51 in the ears and into thetubular rod 30, for the purpose oconnecting the'mop, brush or scrubber, or the Wiper to the fork of thc rccprocable rod or member 28. Y
A suitable device 52 is provided for holding the mop or scrubber, and the wiper at any desired angle, according to the position of the 'o casing which carries the operating mechanism for the rod.
In cleaning windows it is the purpose to lirst attach the mop, scrubber or similar device between the prongs 28, and after thoroughly washing the window, the scrubber or mop is removed and the wiper in Figure 7 substituted, the manner of attachment being the same as that with the mop or scrubber. After wiping the window it may be polished, by removing the wiper and attachin" the chamois skin holder, the attachment ci this being accomplished in the samemnnner as the attachment of the wiperor the mop or scrubber. The casing 1 with its two tubular extensions 16 and 17 may be positioned at the desired angle, and by operating the button switch 19, the electric motor may impart movement to the gear 6, which will transmit its rotary movement to a reciprocating movementtransmitted to the member or rod 1.4.
1, and by causing the motor to operate the rod or member 2S will reciprocate carrying the wiper or brush, or the polisher backwards and forwards over the lace of the window.
