.application filed September This invention has reference to filing cabinets and aims to provide means to be installed in the usual drawers of a tiling cabinet so that the space within a drawer may be divided into compartments so that filing may be accomplished with facility.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is ad justable and may be used in connection with boxes or `drawers of various sizes within eertain limits.
7With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure l is a side elevational view illustrating;` a drawer equipped with a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the drawer; Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the drawer; Figure l is a fragmental horizontal sectional view on line le-a, Fig. 1; lligure 5 is a section on line 5 5, Fig. 1; Figure 6 is a fragmental perspective view of the device; Figure 7 is a front elevational view of a modified forni of drawer; Figure 8 is a side elevational view thereof, partly in section; and Figure 9 is a section taken on line 9 9 of flfigure 8.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the drawer of a filing cabinet which is provided with two pairs or sets of openings 6 arranged in its rear end wall, the openinffs 6 of each pair being disposed in vertical spaced relation for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described.
'llhe metallic drawer being constructed in the usual and well known manner includes a front end wall 7 and an inner end wall 8 spaced therefrom, the inner wall 8 being provided with openings 9. Disposed at opposite sides of the drawer are supporting` rods l() that are formed with corrugations throughout their lengths 'defining irregularities to hold the cross bars 11 of the pockets against accidental displacement. rlhe inner ends of the rods are bent at right angles as at l2, the right-angled ends having lateral eX- Serial No. 213,696.
tremities 13 to be tted in the openings 6 to se cure the inner ends of the rods within the drawer. Ears indicated at 14 are stamped :trom the inner end wall of the drawer andare extended inwardly, the ears being arranged in suitable spaced relation with the sides of the drawer to permit the right-angled ends l2 of the rods to be positioned between the ears and sides of the walls.
The forward ends of the rods 10 extend upwardly as at 15 and are designed to be positioned in the openings 9 of the wall 8 to lock the forward ends of the rods within the drawer, A transversely disposed rod 16 is positioned at the forward end of the drawer and is. provided with reduced end portions fitted in openings formed in the sides of the drawer. fihis rod 16 acts as a support for the forward end of the flexible material of which the pockets are formed. rldlie side members of the drawer are also provided with penings spaced from the openings in which the reduced ends of the rod 16 are disposed, so that when the roes 10 are moved to their lowermost positions, the ends of the rod 16 may be positioned in the last-mentioned openings.
Forming an important feature of the invention are the pockets which are indicated generally by the reference character 17, the pockets being formed of suitable flexible material that hang into the drawer, the up` per edges thereof being connected with the cross bars 11 for supporting the pockets, the front end of thc lint pocket being connected to the rod 16.
As shown, these bars 11 are formed with notches 1S extended from the lower edges thereof, upwardly and laterally defining hooks 19 that may be hooked over the rods 10 to support the pockets and permit the poel:- ets to be slid longitudinally of the rods 10 to the end that the pockets may be moved into close engagement with each other when the drawer is to be closed or the bars 11 .may be separated to permit of easy access to the cards supported therein.
ln order that the bars 11 will be held against movement over the rear ends of the rods 10, lugs 2O are formed the inner ends of the rods, which lugs act as stops to limit the movement of the bars 11.
vl/hen the device is to be used in connection with filing cabinets embodying wooden drawers, openings such as indicated at 2l are provided in the front wall 22 of the drawer,
Cil
which openings accommodate the forward ends of the rods 23.
rlhe rear ends of the rods 23 arealso positioned in openings 24 that areV arranged in the rear end wall of the drawer. In this form of the invention it is to be understood that pockets similar to those previously described, are supported by the rods 23 and are operated in the same manner as the pockets lpreviously lo, y
described. l Y
From'the foregoing itrwill be seen that due to the construct-ion shown and described, the usual filing cabinet drawer will be readily andv easilyfvoonverted into a` drawerV having numerous compartmentsfor the reception oi". cards employed in filing.
claim:
l. ln combination with Y aviling cabinet y drawer having sets of vertically spaced openings in the front and rear end walls thereof, rods having their ends positioned within the openings so as toV be adjustable, said rods having irregular port-ions, partitioning menibers, and means on the partitioning members for engaging the irregular portions to hold the partitioning members in various positions oi adjustment.
2. In a filing cabinet drawer having a rear wall formed with openings, an inner wall disposed adjacent to the front of the drawer and having openings, supporting rods having their rear ends disposed in the openings of the end wall, the forward ends of the rods being positioned in the openings of said inner wall, a rod extending across the drawer and ,contacting with the supporting rods at the front ends thereof, and means movable longitudinally of the supporting rods for supporting` articles.
A tiling cabinet drawer including side walls and iront and rear end walls, said rear wall having vertically spaced openings formed therein, ears extending inwardly from the rear wall, an inner end wall spaced :trom the front wall and having vertically spaced openings, supporting rods having one of their respective ends disposed in certain of the openings of the end wall, said ears engaging the rods to hold the rods against lateral movement, the opposite ends of said supporting rods extending into corresponding openings of the inner `end wall,.and means on the rods for supporting articles held in the drawer.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own, have hereto aiiXed my signature FREDERCK W. FRENCH.
