HARRY CRAVER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, 01 NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
COVER-HOLDING MEANS FOR COLLAR CANS.
Application am April 23,
This invention relates to tearing strip containers of the interior collar type in which the severed portion of the body is adapted to be used as a temporary closure after the container has been opened by removal of the tearing strip.
The temporary closure thus provided is ordinarily a plain slip cover and in the event that the flange thereof is not very wide, or the fit between the parts is not accurate, accidental displacement may and frequently does occur. The purpose of my invention is to provide means for locking the temporary closure to the interior collar in such manner that accidental displacement will be prevented and still the cover may be positioned and removed without difliculty.
Numerous other objects and. advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tearing strip container in which my invention is embodied, a part thereof being broken away for convenience in illustration and the cover being shown in position after removal of the tearing strip; 1
Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation, also broken away and showing the parts prior to removal of the tearing strip;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the container with the cover removed;
Fig. 4' is an enlarged detail section, taken substantially on the line 44 of Fig. 3 and showing also a portion of the cover connected with the collar member in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the upper part of the container, partially broken away and showing the temporary closure in separated relationship.
The container shown upon the drawing, for purposes of illustration, is of the type adapted for the packaging of coffee, or like contents, and consists of a cylindrical body 11 hermetically closed at the top and bottom by end members 12 and 13 and provided with an interior collar 14 secured in place by means of a circumferential bead 15. Said body is closed at the side by a side seam 16 and is provided beneath the top with parallel circumferential score lines 17, setting ofi a in said body and adapted to receive the sev- 110 1924. Serial No. 708,411.
tearing strip having an extension or tongue 18 at one end thereof.
The upper part of the body severed by removal of the tearing strip provides a temporary closure adapted to fit upon the pro-- truding portion of the collar 14. and, in the present instance, I provide means for connecting said closure to said collar for the purpose hereinbefore stated. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said means consists of interlocking parts such as a bayonet joint, comprising internal projections 19 in the temporary closure adapted to enter slots 21 in the collar and to be disposed in the lower diagonal portion thereof by partial rotation of said closure after it has been pressed down onto the collar. As shown in Fig. 5, a modification of the locking joint consists of diagonal or inclined grooves or slots 22 in the collar and diagonal or inclined beads or projections 23 in the cover adapted to be interengaged in similar manner. It will be evident that the closure may be readily positioned and removed and when in position will be held against accidental displacement, and will provide a tight joint preventing exposure of the contents or theentry of impurities into the container.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificin all of its material advantages, the form ereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container, comprising a body provided with score lines setting ofl a tearing strip be- 9 neath the top thereof, a collar member disposed within said body and adapted to receive the severed upper part of the container as a temporary closure after removal of the tearing strip, and means for connecting and releasing said closure to and from said collar to prevent accidental removal thereof, the operation of said connecting and releasing means being prevented by the tearing strip "and permitted by its removal.
2. A container, comprising a body provided with score lines setting off a tearing strip beneath the top thereof, a collar disposed withered upper portion of the container as a temporary closure after removal of the tearing strip, and means for connecting said temporary closure to said collar, said means comprising interlocking parts provided respectively upon that part of the body which is above the tearing strip and upon the collar.
3. A container, comprising a body provided with score lines setting off a tearing strip beneath the top thereof a collar member disposed within said body and adapted to receive the severed upper part of the container as a temporary closure after removal of the tearing strip, and means for connecting said closure to said collar to prevent accidental removal thereof, said means comprising cooperating parts on said closure and collar adapted to be engaged by partial rotation of the closure.
4. A container, comprising a body provided with score lines setting off a tearing strip beneath the top thereof, a collar member disposed Within said body and adapted to receive the severed upper part of the container as a temporary closure after removal of the tearing strip, and means for connecting said closure to said collar to prevent accidental removal thereof, said means comprising a plurality of cooperating parts spaced circumferbody, and an interior collar attached to the body below said tearing strip, the part of the body above the tearing strip and the upper part of the collar being formed with a dctachable connection by means of projections and grooves one set of which is diagonally arranged, whereby the top may be screwed on I and oii the collar after the tearing strip has been removed. I i
6. A container, comprising a body provided with score lines setting off a tearing strip beneath the top thereof, a collar disposed Within said body and adapted to receive the severed upper portion of the container as a temporary closure after removal of the tearing strip, and grooves and beads formed on the upper part of the collar and on that part of the body which is above the tearing strip.
