GOLF-BAG-SUPPORTING DEVICE.

My invention relates to improvements in golf bag supporting devices, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and ar rangements herein described and claimed .5 An object of my invention is to provide a golf bag supporting device which may be readily secured to any size or type of golf bag forsupporting thesame. L

A further object of my invention is to pro- 1 vide a device of the type described which has novel means for automatically actuating sup porting members when the golf bag is placed upon the ground so that the supporting members willhold the golf bag in a substantially upright position.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which has novel means for automatically moving the supporting members into their normal positions when the golf bag has been raised from the ground.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which holds the golf bag at a desired angle for readily removing the golf sticks.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which prevents the golf bag from collapsing or sagging when placed on end.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a casing 1 which is somewhat arcuate-shaped in general contour. The casing 1 is provided withan arcuate-shaped compartment 2 which communicates at its ends with transversely 1 extending compartments 8 and 4 and at its center with a guide receptacle portion 5. Elongated grooves 6-are provided in the walls of the receptacle I p A movable frame 7 which is arcuate-shaped in general contour is arranged to be disposed in the arcuate-shaped compartment 2. The endsof the frame 7 arejprovided with rack portions and 9, the teeth of which extend into the transversely extending compartments 3 and 4, respectively. The frame 7 is pro vided with a guide 10 positioned at its center and arranged to be disposed in the guide receptacle 5. The guide 10'isprovided with tongue portions 11 upon each side thereof and arranged to be received inthe grooves 6.

The guide 10 is provided with a reduced collar portion 12 an'da central opening 13 which is arranged to receive an actuating rod 14. The rod 14is rigidly heldin place by a bolt 15 or the like." The upper surface of the so guide 10 is provided with a circular recess 16 for receiving 1 a cone-shaped spring 17 which is disposed'bet-ween the guide, 10 and the casing 1. 2'

, Supporting members or tubes 18 are provided at their upper ends with toothed lever arms 19 which are pivotally disposed in the transversely extending compartments 3 and 4 in such a manner that the teeth 20 thereof are in mesh with the teeth of the racktportions8 and 9. The lower extremities of the supporting members or tubes 18 and therod 20 are provided with resilient pads 21. a

v The casingl is provided with substantially U-shap ed bag-receiving portions 22 which are provided with arcuate-shaped gripping surfaces 1 23' having arcuate-shaped recesses 24 therein; Clamps or gripping members 25 are provided with arcuate-shaped recesses 26 and arranged to be adjustably secured in the 0 substantially U-shaped portions 22 by means of bolts 27. The bolts 27 extend through elongated slots 28 and openings 29 which are provided in the flanges 30 which are integral with the gripping members 25. Adjusting screws 31 extend through the casing 1 and have their ends receivable in recesses 32 in the gripping members 25. The adjusting screws 31 may be locked in adjusted position by lock nuts 33.

A base 34 is provided with members 35 and 36 which have gripping lugs 37 and 38 extending transversely with respect thereto. The members 35' and 36 are adjustably secured to each other byabolt 39. The member 35 is provided with abearing portion-4O having anopening 41 therethrough arranged to receive the actuating rod 14.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. Theordinary golf bag, such as that indicated at 42. is-provided with a beaded top 43 and a rigid bottom portion 44. The arcuate-shaped gripping surfaces 23 areso arranged that the casing 1 may be readily disposed upon the golf bag 42 and rigidly secured in place in the following manner. I receiving portions 22 of the casing 1 are disposed over the beaded top 43 of the golf bag 42 in such a manner that the arcuateshaped gripping surfaces 23 thereof willbe positioned against the inner wall of the golf bag. The clamps or gripping members 25 may then be moved into gripping relation with the bag so that the beaded top 43 will be received in the recesses 24 and 26. This moving of the gripping members 25 is done by actuating the adjusting screws 31. The adjusting screws may be locked in the desired positions by the lock nuts 33 which engage with the inner wall of the casing 1. The clamps or gripping members 25 may be further locked in their gripping positions by making tight the bolts 27 The base34' may be disposed upon the bottom portion 44 of the golf bag so that the gripping lugs 37 and 38 engage with the bottom portion 44 when the members 35 and 36 are drawn together by means of the bolt 39.

- The spring '17 will hold the supporting members 18 in close engagement with the golf bag while the golf bag is being carried. If the user is desirous of placing the golf bag upon the ground in a substantially upright position, by placing thev golf bag so that it will presumably set upon the bottom portion, the actuating rod 14' will engage with the ground. As the actuating rod engages with the ground, the weight of the golf bag and the contents thereof is sufficient to actuate the rod 14 against the tension of the spring 17 for moving the frame within the casing 1 in such a manner that the guide The substantially U-shaped bag 10 and the tongue portions 11 will move within the receptacle 5 and the grooves 6. The upward movement of the frame 7 causes the supporting members 18 to swing outwardly, due to their operative engagement with the frame through the rack portions 8 and 9 and the toothed portions 20 of the v lever arms 19. Therefore, it will be observed that immediately upon placing the golf bag upon the bottom portion, the supporting members 18 will be automatically swung outwardly to form a tripod with the actuating rod 14 for support-in the golf bag.

As soon as the golf bag is raised free from the ground, the spring 17 moves the frame 7 downwardly causing the toothed connection between the frame andthe-supporting members-to automatically swing the supporting members into their normal-positions adjacent the golf bag. I

1. A device of the type described comprising a casing having means for removably clamping said casing onto a golf bag, a frame movably disposed within the casing and being provided with ratchet teeth, a plurality of supporting members having teeth for engaging the ratchet portion of said frame, and an actuating rod having one end operatively connected with said frame and the opposite end projecting beyond the bottom of the bag.

2. A device of the type described comprising a casing having means for removably clamping said casing onto a golf bag, a frame movably disposed within the casing and being provided with ratchet teeth, a plurality of supporting members having teeth for engaging the ratchet portion of said frame, an

actuating rod having one end operatively connected with said frame and the opposite end projecting beyond the bottom of the bag, and means removably attached to the bottom of the bag for slidably guiding said actuating rod.

3. A device of the type described comprising a casing having means for removably clam ingsaid casing onto a golf bag, a frame mova ly disposed within the casing and being provided with ratchet teeth, a plurality of supporting members having teeth for en gaging the ratchet portion of said frame, an actuating rod having one end operatively connected with said frame and the opposite end projecting beyond the bottom of thebag, means removably attached to the bottom of the bag for slidably guiding said actuating rod, and spring means disposed withinthe casingand bearingagainst said frame.

4. A device of the type described comprising a casing having arcuate-shaped portions for engaging a portion of the upper edge of a golfbag, arcuate-shaped gripping members carried by the casing for clamping a portion of the upper edge of the bag between the arcuate-shaped surfaces and said gripping members, a frame movably disposed within the casing and being provided with ratchet teeth, a plurality of supporting members having teeth for engaging the ratchet portions of said frame and pivotally mounted therein, spring means disposed within the casing and bearing against said frame for normally holding the lower edge of the frame substantially flush with the lower edge of the casing, and an actuating rod having one end operatively connected with said frame and the opposite end projecting beyond the bottom of the bag.

5. A device of the type described comprising a casing having arcuate-shaped portions for engaging a portion of the upper edge of a golf bag, arcuate-shaped gripping members carried by the casing for clamping a portion of the upper edge of the bag between the arcuate-shaped surfaces and said gripping members, a frame movably disposed within the casing and being provided with ratchet teeth, a plurality of supporting members having teeth for engaging the ratchet portions of said frame and pivotally mounted therein, spring means disposed within the casing and bearing against said frame for normally holding the lower edge of the frame substantially flush with the lower edge of the casing, an actuating rod having one end operatively connected with said frame and the opposite end projecting beyond the bottom of the bag, and means clamped upon the bottom of the bag for slidably guiding said actuating rod.

6. A device of the type described comprising a casing having means for removably clamping said casing onto a golf bag, a frame movably disposed within the casing and being provided with ratchet teeth, a supporting member pivotally secured to the casing and having teeth arranged for engaging said ratchet teeth, and an actuating rod having one end operatively connected with said frame and the opposite end projecting beyond the bottom of the bag, whereby movement of the actuating rod upwardly with respect to the bag will cause said supporting member to be moved into a supporting position.
