Y., A CORPORATION- or NEW YORK COMBINATION PADLOCK Application led January rIhis invention relates generally to padlooks, the invention having more particular reference to a combination padlock in which the leg or legs of the shackle is engaged by notched rings which are rotatable to different positions to release the shackle by aligning the notches in the various rings, the invent-ion having for an object the provision of a novel and improved combinationy padlock of this type whose combination may be readily changed at the will of the owner, and which is characterized by convenience of manipulation of the parts in unlocking the padlock.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

As here shown my improved padlock comprises a casing 10 having a cylindrical cavity in which are received a number of rings 11 that fit snugly therein and rest freely on one another and in the said casing. The casing is closed at one end by an integral bottom member 10 and at its other end by a cap-plate 14 that has a stud 15 projecting therefrom through the rings 11, this stud having a diminished screwthreaded tip 16 that engages in a tapped aperture in the bottom member 10, the stud being of substantially the same diameter as the bore of the rings 11. As here shown the two legs of the shackle are formed separate from one another and each leg comprises inner and outer sections 20 and 21 respectively outer sections having a stud on its end that f Y engages ina socket in the'adj acent end of the other outer section. When the shackle is locked, the joints between the inner and outer sections are conned within bosses 14 projected from the cap 14 thereby preventing the outer sections of the two legs swinging away from one another, the cap having apertures therein in alinement with the offsets 18 from the cavity in the casing as will be understood. The rings 11 are formed with notches such as 27that are adapted to be brought into registry with the shackle legs when the shackle is to be released, and with flattened surfaces such as `28 on opposite sides to permit of adjustment of the rings to release one leg of the shackle without interference with the other leg. The rings 11 have studs 30 projecting therefrom into a longitudinal slot 31 formed in one face of the easing 10, so that adjustment of the rings may be effected. The notches 27 in the rings are so arranged that they may be brought into registry' with the shackle legs by, selective adjustment ofthe,

studs 30 to positions with one series engaged with one wally of the sloty 31 and another series engaged with the other wall of the slot, while one or more of the rings may be arranged to have their notches register with the shackle legs vwhenthe studs v30 thereon are midway between opposite walls of the slot 31. In the form of the rinvention shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing I employ onlyone movable shackle leg that consists of outer and inner sections 20 and 21 hinged together as at 22, and a fixed leg 33 that projects from the cap 14.y This leg 33 has a transverse pin 34 in its outer end that engages in notches such as 35 in the forked end ofthe leg 21. In the form of the invention 'shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, the shackle is in the form of a one-piece member having one leg 40 relatively short and extending only into anv aperture in the cap 14, lthe inner part oi the other leg 41 being arranged similarly-to the leg section 20 shown in Fig. 4, while the alternating notched rings 11 and washers 36 are provided. A In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing the same general construction as in Fig. 1 is employed except that the two legs 2 1 of the shackle are each formed of one piece'and are united by a chain 45 that may be of any desired length. j Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire toproteet by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows 1. A combination padlock comprising'a casing, a center stud adapted to be secured'atone end to said casing and provided at its other end with a top closure portion for said casing having spaced shackle openings, a series of rings rotatable in said casing about said stud vand formed with notches, a shackle having 'a pair of legs projecting into said casing through said openings on opposite sides of Vsaid rings and having notches in its legs to vreceive the edge portions of the said rings,

Ay combination padlock, comprising a casing, a center stud adapted to be secured at 'one end to said casing and provided at its other end with a topclosure portion for said casing having spaced shackle openings, a series oflocking members movably mounted in said casing about'psaid stud, a shackle hav- 'ing two legs one of which is ladapted to be engaged in said casing through said openings independently of the other and having notches to receive portions of said movable locking members and a flexible connection between said legs. j
