' This inventionv relates t cartons and particularly to cartons provided with an inner It is desirable, when packaging a largeF variety of oily materials such as cloves, cinl namen, spices and the like, and when packaging candiesfconfections, etc., to .provide the carton with an inner( lining such as a cellulose parchment liner, or. one formed of some suitable non-absorbent material. t This lining prevents the oil from .striking through or impregnating the carton walls and rendering the package unsightly and unsaleable. ItV
also prevents sugar-coated products from` -ilexible walls, will not readily conforman remain in contact throughout its extent wit l the inner walls of the carton while empty and during the filling operation.-
In" the interval in which the lined carton is being conveyed from the carton-maklng Amachine, as by endless belt or chaln, to the point where the material is automatically fed l by suitablemechanical` means yinto the same, the walls' of the liner are frequentlyexed .or-'warped way from the walls of the sur-v rounding carton, with the result that a por-1 tion of the materials is deposited 'orlled 1n the spaces :thus 4afforded'between the l1ner L and'the carton; Also, inl manypinstances, this .warping of the liner -walls occurs during the illingoperation and after a small portlon A distribute the` materia1s^in equal quantities-- of the walls)of the same, and the contents .are partly: discharged' into the spaces thus formed between the lateral walls of the liner and the carton. Conse uently, the advantages ,to be obtained by t e use of a liner are ...destroyed and frequentwfthevolume ofthe containeris materially ecreased.
rIt has been proposed to paste the liner to the carton blank entirely along the length' thereof so that the two elements `may be simultaneously :t'olded into box-like form, to-
overcome the highly undesirable e'ects resultlng from warped or inwardly bulging walls. When this is not done, the disadvantages setforth have been experienced unless the lined cartons werelled manually, or so slowly as toinsure the reception of the entire' charge within the liner, which, in either case, results in a loss of time, or in increased ex-A pense, or both. Y f
Anl objectof thisinvention is to provide, as an article of manufacture', a simple, inexpensive, linedl carton such that the walls of the .liner will not warp or become distorted either prior 'to or during the filling operation, a
sma'll horizbntal strip, or-strips of adhesive to the linerl or. carton adjacent the line of fold of the top aps prior Ato the association of the linerwith the carton, 'in such a manner that the liner will be securely held, when installed, in contact with the inner Walls ofthe carton during" the illingvoperation. y
one which may be machine-filled, l1f desired, withoutnecessitating the usepof a funnel and this isv efectedxby applyiig al The invention will bemore readily under- 1 stood byv reference" to the drawings, in which e' Fig. 1 isa view', in perspective, illustrating one .embodiment of the present invention;
. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation, on an enlarged slcalefof the carton shown in Fig. 1
Fig. 3 is a view, in perspective, 'illustrating accompanying completely associated with the carton Fig. 4 is a sectionalview, on a reduced scale, taken`on .line 5--5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 isa view similar to Fig. 4 illustrating the adhesive material applied to the carton'` rather than the liner; and' I Fig. 6 isv a view.\similar tov Figs. 4 showing the manner in which walls of the 9o of the, contents has been directed into v the fthe carton andllner before the latter has been A y f "lined carton, since it is impossible t9 initially n, A liner 8, formed in an ordinary liner warp or bulge inwardly priorV to and during the filling operation. Referring to the accompanying drawings, I wherein like reference numeralspindicate like 45 parts, 1 is avl carton, preferablyfformed by isuitable machinery from a singlefblank into any desired shape and siz'e,=,ffpr`ovided'with scoring lines 2, 3, 4, etc., cutti g vlines 5, and i Vlapsand 7. f
4sired manner from a suitably shaped blankl of vcellulose parchment or other suitable material, isern- '-ployedas the inner member'of my improved carton. The sizeof the liner blank is sub- -"stantial1y-the same as the s1ze of the carton blank in order to provide foldable portions "at opposite extremities of the liner, and said foldable` port-ions" of the liner are entirely 4 `free with respect to the foldable p/rtions or flaps of the carton (Figs. 1 and 2), in order to :facilitate sealing of the package after the same has been filled. Preferably, I apply a narrow strip 9, o'f `glue or paste, to each o f side walls 1() of liner 8 in such a position that, when the liner is completely associated with carton 1, strips 9 will be closeladjacent, but
" below, and substantially paral el to the u per end'o. side walls of carton lor'scoring'- ines 3. Since the liner ina carton always engages 20 the carton tightly adjacent unfold lines of its sides, it is not essential in overeoming` bulgingof the liner to extendV strips 9 the full width of the side walls 10 ofthe liner. As shown in Fig. 1, strips 9 terminate at both ends within the area defined by scoring lines f 3 and 4 and in this manner a. great saving of adhesive is efected. If desired, strips 9 may be applied in any suitable manner to the inner x 'side walls of/the carton in the same relative position, i. e. adjacent to, but'slightly below, and substantiall parallelto scoring lines 3, as indicated in 5. t
When my improved carton is formed and assembled by machinery now in use and par- ;.45 ticularly adapted for such work, the cartons and liners are formed and one end'thereof closed andl sealed after the assembly of the two members. Adhesivestri s 9'are applied tothe liner 8. or the carton bei) 5 associated. yAny suitable means may Ythen be employed to' insure. "that the" glue or paste:
- strips shall cause theliner'to adhere to the "walls of the carton or, if: desired, the two cent said s'trrps. Fi 1 and 2 ustrate the ly. Y 4
resultsof this assem Y'When my improvdcartonisbeing con-'c veyed tothe filling point and during the {ill- I; ing` operation, liner 8 is held in close contact #with the inner walls Aof carton as indicated in Fg.l4` with the result that it is impossible forsmall particles of the material being packaged to fall or enter'between the respecp C5 tive'walls'of the twomembers forming the' chea ,simple and e ldisa vantagesand objections that are heretoo re the two are container. I thelby prevent the warping or inward bulgin of the walls of theliner, as illustrated in ig. 6` and thus obviate in a lfective manner the great fore stated. f
The cartons `normally in use are of such size that it isY ordinarily unnecessary to apply the adhesive strips 9 in any other manner than described and illustrated.
However, in unusually large cartons, it may be desirable to-eXten'd the strip ofadhesive around the four sides ofthe carton to insureagainst the formation of the objectionable spaces 11.
The invention is capable. of receiving a variety ofexpressions, one. of'which. is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but
it is to be expressly `understood that the dra.w.- v i ings are for purposes of illustration onl and are not designed as a definition of the 'mits of the invention, reference being had for this- I.
' purpose to the appended claim.
Whatis claimed iszl A carton vcomprising an outer memberA of cardboard or the like provided at the upper end thereof with package-closin'giortions extending from four side' panels o ber, and La "separately formed, liexible paper liner adapted' to be assembled therewith and having restricted adhesive areas adapted 'to attach lit to the outer member on two opposed top portions only of-'saidmember'and having "a body portionin the outer member substantially free of the walls thereof, s aid liner hav inga ackage-elosing portion adjacent to and entire y free from the package-closing portions on the outer member and adapted for independently reclosing when portions of the contents have been removed. i L
In testimony vwhereof I have signed this specification. 'C
