Description

i Patented Dec. 3, 1929 l UNITED STATES 4Pa'rrzrrr OFFICE JOSEPH J'. HEYMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MILANO FURNITURE COM- PANY, INC., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, .A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS COFFEE TABLE Application led October 1, 1927. Serial No. 223,365.
lO vided with an ornate panel arranged in countersunk formation in respect to the top of the table and adapted in turn to receive a tray, the supporting panel of which is formed of glass whereby to support the cups of cotlee l when in use as a tray and whereby to provide a transparent member through which the ornate panel of the table may be viewed when the tray is supported by the table.
Still *another object of my invention.- ret@ sides/in the details of construction of the upper portion of the table, the ornate panel and the tray whereby the ornate panel may be detached from the table itself and whereby the tray detachably overlies the ornate-panel M5 and Vwhereby the supporting frame of the table is countersunl to provide a seat not only for the ornate panel but also for the trayV itself.
, 'lhese and other objects of my invention d@ will be apparent from a perusal of the following specification when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 isa perspective view of my improved coffee table showing tne serving tray 35, in position thereon.
Figure 2 isfa similar viewV withthe tray removed and showing the ornate ligures in the countersun'k' panel of the table top.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken longi- @o tudinally through the table as shown in Fig- =\.ure 2.
' Figure 4 is an end view thereof.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the detachable tray itself.
t@ Referring now-to the drawings in detail,
my improved coii'ee table comprises a table, adetachable ornate panel there for, and a detachable tray. v The table proper, whichfor purposes of illustration is vshown as rectangular in shape,
may be of any desired outline and of any desir-ed design. In the embodiment illustrated 1t comprises an upper rigid frame composed of an outer frame 2 preferably ornamented on its outer facing and inner frame 4, which g frames are rigidly glued or otherwise fastened together and have fastened to them at the corners dependin legs 6 whereby to provlde a solid rectangu ar frame for the table. In addition this frame is provided with deliti pending skirts 8 which are connected to the underside of the frames 2 and l and lie between the legs 6. It will be realized that various constructions may be utilized for the formation of this rigid trame. The trames 2 and 4 are constructed and arranged to provide a continuous countersunk shoulder within the frame and this shoulder forms a very solid and substantial seat in which the ornamental panel member, hereinafter described, and the tray itself are adapted to rest and be supported. i
In order to provide an ornamental top for the table, l provide a trame 10 of corresponding rectangular youtline which is detachable as a unit from the table. This panel is provide with an outstanding dange l2' which foams with the adjacent wall of the panel` a horizontal face and a vertical face whereby the frame 10 is adapted to frictionally lit and seat upon the inner frame 4 of the table top and in a manner such that the outer face of the flange 12 will frictionally grip the inner wall of the outer frame 2. This frame -10 is provided with an ornate insert l2, the upper surface of which is preferably carved or otherwise ornamented in intaglio or in cameo. In the present instance these ornamental ligures are set up in raised relief.
The tray comprises a frame 14. of rectangular outline to correspond with a shape of the seat formed byl the internal surfaces of the outer frame 2. This tray is provided with a glass panel 16 and two hand holding members 18 by which the tray may be detached and lifted from the table and carried about while serving the colee. It willbe noted that the outer wall of the frame 14 of the tray seats snugly within the inner face of the outer frame member 2 and is supported directly ftable in which the top on 'top of the outstanding flange 12 ofthe ornamental panel 10.
By reason of the foregoing construction it will be seen that I have provided a coffee of the table is provided with an interc angeable, detachable panel having an ornamental `upper surface which, when the transparent tray' is -in position on the table, is viewable through the glass panel of the tray so that the ornamental structions of other material are within the contemplation of my invention. It will be furthermore appreciated that by forming the frame 14 of the tray and lthe outer flange 12 of the ornamental panel of the same size, these two detachable members mayseat Within the shoulder and seat formed by the junction of the outer and inner frame members 2 and 4 forming the table top.
'Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: ,J
