HANDLE FOR BAGGAGE OR LUGGAGE Filed Oct. 4, 1926 /f/vENroR A T T ORNE Y Patented Jan. 7, 1930 UNITED STATES MAX LEVI, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND HANDLE FOR BAGGAGE OR LUGGAGE Application filed October 4, 1926. Serial No. 139,281.
This invention relates to improvements in handles for baggage, sample-eases or luggage and has for one object to provide an improved handle wherein the grip portion shall be lie):-
ible whereby to Conform to the shape of the closed hand and thus distribute the weight across the entire width of the hand instead of at a single point as it does when such grip portion is rigid.
Another objeet of the invention to provide a tubular and flexible grip portion tor a handle which tube is Cloey d at its ends by suitable ferrules whereby when the weight attached at the opposite ends of the flexible 'yrip is carried, the yielding grip will aet a shock absorber as the person Carrying the saine steps when walking.
A further objeet is to provide a tubular and flexible handle-grip with loops and hooks t the opposite ends thereof whereby the saine Anay be hooked to the ordinary handle rings on a bag or ease or may be attaehed to a pair of straps which eneirele a pa eel or bundle.
lVith these and other objet-ts in view. the invent ion is illustrated in the aeeoinpanying drawing, wherein,-
Fig` l shows the Complete handle in side elevation.
Fig. Q illustrates the saine in top view.
Fig. B shows a erossseetion detail through one end of the handle as it would appear if Viewed ou the line 3MP; of Fig.
Fig. a'- illustrates a eross-seetioual the line 4 4- of Fig. 1`r and Fig. 5 shows a eros-section through the 1ubular handle on the lL Ae :3f-5 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawing the nun'ieral (i. designates a flexible tubular grip-portion ot' the handle. in praetiee, l tind that short 1fngths of rubber hose of the garden hose Jariety to be well suited for the purpose cause it is suitably tlexible and is sullieiently tough to sustain the strains.
The two ends of this tubular ffrip-portion re flattened and preferably enelosefl in inelal ierrules 7 so that both ends ot the tube are thereby sealed.
A loop 8, is then formed of metal, leather or other suitable material and the two ends 50 "l of this loop are placed against the opposite detail on tiat faces of the inetal ferrule so as to straddle the latter and a heavy rivet 10, is passed through the loop-ends and also through the ferrule and the llattened end 0f the tubular grip.
The loops 8. are preferably provided with metal spring hooks 1l, so the tatter may be artnr-hed to the ordinary rings that are provided on most hand grips and eases for atteehinent of handles.
l form the loops 8 however so that in case it be desired to use the handle in Connection with straps that pass around a bundle or packages like a so-Called shawl strap, then sueh straps may readily be passed through the loops 8 and the handle connected as well as though engaged by the spring hooks 11.
I have found, in practice, from many years ot' traveling with samples that rigid hand grasp handles on bags and sample eases are exeeedingly trying on the hand and will pinch the flesh and forni eallouses.
Ry the use of a handle sueh as is illustrated and described herein, I have found that the eases and samples can be Carried with much less fatigue7yielding as the handle does when nu lling relieves the arins and shoulders of the strain and shocks, and that by having the grip tubular and flexible the saine will conform to the areh of the closed hand so that the weight distributed all the way across the hand instead of being confined to one single point as it appears to be in the rigid handle structures I have been obliged to use.
Having described iny invention, I claim z- 85 A hand grip for baggage and luggage cornprising a hollow flexible grip of a` hose-like strueture which is free of longitudinal stretch under the weight carried said hollow hoselike structure having its ends secured and sealed in lattened inetal ferrules, a loop straddling the fiat faces of each metal fer-rule and a rivet extending through the ends of the loop and also through the flat metal ferrule and the iattened ends of the hollow grip eneased in the ferrule.
lu testimony whereof I allix iny signature.
MAX LEVI.
