Description

F. BEAUMONT, 3r.
STILTS.
N 175 407 Patented March 28.1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN BEAUMONT, J R., OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STILTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,407, dated March 28, 1876; application filed November 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANKLIN BEAUMONT, J 1-., of the city and county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a newand'lmproved Stilt; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact'descript-ion of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation; Fig. 2, a plan view.
The invention relates to means whereby a stilt-stirrup may be quickly, easily, and securely fastened at difl'erent elevations on the standard.
It will first be-described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents a plain standard, which is preferably made of a square stick of wood, and B a stirrup, provided with a sleeve, 0, that slides upon the standard. The stirrup and sleeve together form a lever which bears upon the standard, and has its fulcrum at the line or edge b, while the sleeve is provided interiorly with teeth 0 c diagonally opposite each other. By lifting the outer end of stirrup slightly the sleeve may be slided up or down on standard, and when the desired point is reached may be merely released. The stirrup will immediately turn on fulcrum b, causing the teeth 0 and c to bite upon the wood of standard and hold the stirrup securely. Of course, when the Weight of the person presses in the stirrup, it will be held without the possibility of slip and with absolute security.
1 am aware that a serrated cam has been used, as also spring held catches; but they require particular adjustment, and are withal much more expensive and liable to get out of repair.
My sleeve is preferably cut away on alterternate sides above and below, so as to perwit the rod to pass the teeth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The combination, with standard A, of the stirrup B and in ternally-toothed sleeve 0, the two forming one lever, that has its fulcrum at b, and is adjustable, as and for the purpose specified.
FRANKLIN BEAUMONT, JR.
