Description

' -Panna-d "Jane 3, I1930 NITED STATES -\1m'1r.1-111 oFFlc f' PERRY F. GRUVER; OFVAMARILLO,
CYLINDER AND Pr'sroN Application -led April 27, Thisinven'tion relates to cylinder and piston construction, the primary obj ect of the in vention being to provide novel means for reducing frictionbetween the piston and walls 5 of the cylinder in which it operates, to the minimum, and at the same time insure a compression .tight contact between the piston and cylinder walls.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a rectangular cylinder and a rectangular piston'operating in the cylinder, the rectangular co struction presenting wide surfaces to accom odates anti-friction'rollers. A still-.further object of the invention is to provide a roller cage including angle bars fitted in the co`rners of the piston, the bars being constructed to linsure a, close fit insurr insured. Asshown, the roller cages are of ing against the loss of compression.
With the foregoing and other objects in '29 view whichl will appear as the description proceeds,.the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of .construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the recise embodiment of the inventionbherein disclosed, may be made within the scope departing from .of what -is claimed, without the vs irit of the invention. p
Re erring to the drawing: so Figure 1 isa longitudinal sectional view throu h a cylinder and piston constructed in accor ance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional-view throu h a cylinder and piston constructed in accordance with the invention and showingthe piston at' the upper end of its stroke.
Figure 3 is a sectlonal view`taken on line j Figure 4 is a fragmental detail view of one of the'angle bars forming a part of the roller.
p eferring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a pump cylinder which is preferably rectangularin cross section, and as shown is cut away on its innerl surfaces providing recesses forv the reception of the roller cages, which are indicatedby the reference character 6. e
' .Each of these roller cages embodies angle bars 7 that lit within the corners 8 of the als ,ton operating in t 1929. serial No. 358596 cylinder so' that the angle bars may move i longitudinally of the cylinder but at the same time provide a compression tight t between 'the angle bars and c linder.
Extending from t e angle bars are lugs 9 55 or pintles that lit into the ends of the hollow rollers 10 to hold the rollers in proper spaced relation with each other to permit the free rotation of the rollers. While I have shown the rollers as hollow, it is of course understood that these rollers may be solid with openings at their ends to receive the lugs 9. I The piston operating iii the cylinder is also rectangular in cross section and is of a size to closely nt within the cylinder and engage the rollers 6 in such a way that a compression tight fit between the plston and rollers is lengths less than the length of the cylinder so that the roller cages may move longitudinally of the cylinder to reduce .friction between the piston and rollers with which the l piston contacts.
While l have shown and described the invention as used in a pump construction, itis to be understood that the idea of the invention may be carried out in the construction of an internal combustionengine.
I claim: j 1. In a device of the character described, so a cylinder rectan ular in cross section, a'pislie cylinder, roller cages positioned within'the cylinder to move longitudinally thereof, and said piston engaging the rollers of the roller cages.
2. 'In a device of the character described, a cylinder, roller cages mounted within the cylinder, each of the roller cages including angle bars fitted` in thecorners of the c lindeis, lugs extending from the angle ars,
' rollers having their ends fitted over the lugs to support the rollers, and a piston o, erating in the cylinder andlcontacting wit the rollers. -f 3. In a device of the character described, a cylinder rectangular in cross section, saidv cylinder having itseinner surfaces cut away defining compartments, an le bars fitted within the corners of the cy inders, lugs on the angle bars, hollow rollers, said lugs exceV tending into the hollow rollers to support the rollers, a piston operating in the cylinder and engalng the rollers to reduce friction between t e piston and cylinder.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aixed my signature.
l PERRY F. GRUVER.
