The bushing is provided with a series of four .notches 8 adjacent its outer end to receive a suitable Wrench or turning tool to facilitate the insertion and removal of the bushing. "As the result of projecting the annular portion or outer end of the bushing19 outwardly beyond the plane of the face of the seat the portion 19 serves to protect the seat 16 from injury by any of the tools inserted into the boiler through thebushing. Thereis suflicient clear ance between the outer end of portion 19 and the cap, so that any deformation, resulting from blows or abrasion fro-m a cleaning tool, will not prevent the cap from being turned so that the gasket 17 will firmly engage the seat 16. This exemplifies a bushing ofawashout plug in which the'seat which is utilized to formthe fiuid tight closure will be protected from deformation or. abrasion likely .tocause leakage of thecontents of the boiler "under high pressure; The cylindrical" bar 21 around the projecting portion 19' serves to guide the cap into its true 'POSltlOIi with respect to thebushing, particularly as the cap, approaches its closed position. f
In the constructionshown in Fig. 3, the bushing is provided in itsouter end with an annular groove 24 and an integral flange 25 adapted-t0 extend around and lap the flange 26 of the cap 27. 'Flange 26 fits into the groove 24 and is provided with an internal screw-thread 27 to engage an external thread 28 on the bushing. The inner end 29 of the groove 2e forms a seat fora packing gasket 30 which is engaged by the inner end of the flange 26 of. the cap to form a fluid-tight con nection betweenthecap and the bushing In this form of the-invention, the" main wall of thebushing and flange 25 both serve to protect the seat 29 and gasket 30 from deforma-' tion by the tools used in cleaning the boiler.
