i vThe object of my invention is to provide ymeans of simple and inexpensive construction that maybe readily,- quicklyandeasily'applied to metal Vbuilding structures,v suchV for. instance as I-'beams and I-columns, for the purpose of enablingthe builder .toreadilyf quicklyl and easily apply a fireproongl mate? rial to the structural metal members.. My inventionconsists in the constructio-n,
1o arrangement and combination of the various parts ofl the iireprooling materiahxwhereby theA objects contemplatedare attained, as hereinaftermore fully. set forth, .pointed out in my claims, and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which: F`gure 1 shows a perspective view, of Aone of my Yimproved.spacingblocks and wedge lock devices. Figure-2 shows a horizontal sectional view 2 0 of a structural I-colinnn having my improved i l ireproong applied thereto. as in use'.
Fi ure 3 shows a vertical sectional view of an I- earn and a portion ofa concrete floor supported thereby and having my improved iireproong applied to the beam; and f' Figure 4 shows a side elevation of a part of a structural metal I-column having my improved reproofincr device applied thereto, a portion. of thereprooiing being broken 30 away to illustrate the arrangement kand local tion of the spacing blocks.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,`
I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate a metal I-beam of ordinary construction.
My improved fireprooiing .aparatus combe made of gypsum or the like, and indicated by the numeralll. Each of these spacing blocks has in one corner, atapered notch 12,
-Y 40 and thisfnotch is so shaped that one of its faces will lie flat against one end of the I- beam to which it is applied, as shownfin Figure 2, and the other faceV ofthe notch will stand at an obtuse angle relative lto ,they first n mentioned face of the notch, as shown in Fig-Y ure 2.
For securing this spacing block to the columin, I have provided a wedge shaped locking device indicated by the numeral 13, 5-0 and this locking device has formed integral with it a rib efbuilder places a coating` `o`f plaster' or the likeon both side,
otherlf engaging the adjacent-portion ofthe I-beainA flange, as shown 'in' Figure Q2, Tand hence 'as soon' as theplaster hasset :and harderred, the jspacinggblpck willpbe firmly supportedin-positionL',
to.,V all four edges of 1the flanges ofthe columnv in; positions spaced apart from leach i other as shownfin' Figure`4-`-l 1 then'ftake 'sheets 'of plasterboard 15'and place'them in PStion et; I
restin'gupon the ribsll yoftheadjacent space ing blocks, yas shown in FigureZ. Itemp'of` `rarily supportf these 'plaster boards in position by' smally portions vof l'cement '16J which may bey applied at intervals throughout the heighty of the V'plaster board and whichform a bond -betweenthe adj acent'- surfaces vof the plaster'board'and the spacingblocksiv` I then apply sheets of plaster board 17 to the outer surfaces ofthe spacingbloclrs, forming a rectangular figure and completely enclosing the columnv and the spacing blocks.` 1I then pour plastic l mater`ial,f 'such `as'gypsum,I in the spaces between thejplaster board 15 and the adjacent plasterfboardlZand also between so the`plaster`-board17 and the 'adjacentv ends of/the 'columnfj This plastic materia-L will completely ll the"saidjspacesgandjalso' the lspaces between the-spacing 4blocks A11,1 and instance, two" inches in thickness, ind the spaces betweenthe yweb of the beam' and the plaster boards 15`v become "dead air "spaceS., which of themselves perform reproofing Jfunctions and the Vexpense ofthe fireproofing 190 I'a'pply a series "of -thefspac ing blocks 11 i fireproo ng structure for the upper surfaceVVV of the beam. When my improved lireproofing method is used for beams that extend horizontally, the plastic `material nis poured;
in through the top after the spacing blocks and plaster boards have: beenapplied tthe bottomandsides ofthe beam.
The outer'V plaster' board layers may Vbe temporarily held in position beforeV the plasti'c material is pouredV between themeither 4 .L. byltempor'a'rily tackingfthem to' the spacing f 2O blocks lea-orl by putting a band 'around the entire column, which-later maylbe removed.
With my improved apparatus, a column be adequately?firepro'ofed witha mini mum o'flabor andin a relatively-short time, because all that theoperator does is to 'take the precast/g spacing blocks andi wedges and dip the-wedges in plastery and then'place the blocks at spaced intervals throughout lthe length of the column 'andi put the wedges in position. 'The plaster Vwill cause an initial adhesion. suficient-to hold the spacing blocks pes'itionunt-l the `plaster has set and hardene'd, fand 'when that takes place the blocks A areheld quite firmly. v The builder' then cuts the plaster boards l5 tov proper widths and simplyplaces them in-position resting against the ribs I4 and temporarily supports these plaster boards 15in position by small particles' of plaster applied at spaced intervals to the' plaster board vand the spacing blocks.
f Then the four outer sheets of plaster board 56 f metal,"comprising aj series of spacing blocks are placed in position-and temporarily held either by tacking.through them into the spacing blocks, or by tying a wire around all four of them. Y Then theplastic material, such as gypsum, is poured'infrom the top to completely'j'fill the spaces between the spacing blocksandplasterboard.'
I claim as my invention:
l. VA:ireprooling' apparatus for structural kmade of yfireprooing material, each formed with a V-shapednotch in one edge, a
. jl-shaped wedge for each spacing block having a rib-projectedoutwardly from it, said Wedge being designed to receive a coating gof plaster and to be placed in the wedge shapednoteh and to be held in such position by the bonding action of said plaster, plaster board sheets yshaped to rest against the said ribsV of the wedges and tolie parallel with, and spaced apart from, the web of the structural metal, a seriesof plaster board sheets placed againstthe outerV surfaces of the spacing blocksv and completely encircling the block andthe' structural metal.`
structural metal, and plastic material inserted in the spaces between the plaster boards that engage the ribs ofthe spacing blocks and the outer plaster board-s at the `sides of the structural metal, and also the spaces between the ends of the structural metal webs and the plaster vboardatthe out- 'sideof the vends. v V2.Y VIna ireprooling apparatus for structura l metal,y the combination of a substantiallymrectangular spacing block made of plastic material -andh'aving a notch at one corner to receive the'edge ofthe structural material and shaped to enter saidr notch and to engage one side lofthe 'notch an'dtheadj acent side vof the structural metal, and being designed to receive layers of .plaster to :cause it `tobond with the adiacent'surfaces "of the designed to receive layers vof plaster to ycause f' it to bond with the adjacent surfacesof the block and the structural metal, and a rib` projected outwardly from saidwedge and designe'd'to forma support for the layerof I plasterboa-rd. il. In a fireprooli'ng apparatus for structural metal, the combination of' a series of blocks, each having a notch to receive-an 'edge vof a structural'meta'l member,'means for temporarily fixing said blocks to the structural metal member, sheets' of plasterv board fixed to said blocks and surrounding the structural metal member and spaced apart from it'by'said blocks, and abody of plastic material'between the plaster board sheets and bonded to the blocks and the structural metal to permanently connect all ofsaid parts.
'5.'In' a ireproongapparatus for lstructural metal,'the combination of a series of blocks, 4each lhaving a notch to receive an edge .of a structuralV metal member, means for temporarily fixing said .blocks tothe structural metal member, sheets of plaster inetalniemben-awedge made-'offireproong los ris
board fixed to' said-blocks and surrounding boards secured to the outer surfaces of the blocks. E Y l A Des Moines, Iowa,"January 11, 1928. ROY V. YEAGER.
