Filed April 8, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Dec. 2, 1930 UNITED STATES PATEN'F OFFICE REN ALFRED LAURENT VOLET, OF LA VAREUN E ST. HILAIRE, FRANCE PUMP Application filed April 8, 1929, Serial No. 353,400, and in Belgium May 9, 1928.
The present invention relates to pumps and, more particularly, to those of the type designed for supplying compressed air to tires and the like.
One of the obj ects of the invention is to provide a compact and simple pump assembly capable of being put together and taken apart rapidly.
Another object is to provide an air filtrating system capable of being built into the pump assembly.
Further objects will appear in the course of the detailed description now to be given with reference to the accompanying dra vings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section of one constructive embodiment of the invention taken on line l-1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a plan, partially in section (line 2-2 of Fig. l), of the structure represented in Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the various iigures of the drawing, there is shown a pump assembly composed of a cylinder 8, a cylinder-head 10, a piston 1 and a pitman or connecting rod 2 having a central opening formed therein permitting passage of a shaft 3 therethrough. This pump assembly is mounted in driven relation to a pair of toothed discs 4, 4 positioned on opposite sides of rod 2 and adjustable relatively to the latter by means of screws 5, 5, a pin 7 serving to connect the connecting rod to said discs. Discs 4, 4 are slidably supported 0n a pair of internally threaded shafts 15, 15 coacting with screws 5, 5, one of said shafts being mounted in turn on a closure 16 forming partof the wall 18 of a chamber 9 completely enclosing the connecting rod and disc assembly. A pinion 6 keyed to shaft 3 transmits power to discs 4, 4 from a conventional motor assembly composed 01": a rotor 19 supported on ball-bearing cages 20 and 27, a disc 22, a spring 23 tending to force rotor 19 towards cage 27, a commutator 24, a rotor winding 25, a ian 26 rigidly attached to shaft 3, a pair of coacting casings 29, 30 enclosing the motor assembly, and a switch casing 31. A metal suspension 32 permits displacement of the combined pump and motor assemblies by means of a handle 42 coacting with an arcuate segment 41 rigidly attached to element 32. Assembly 2, 4, 4, 6, 7, it will be noted, is entirely isolated from the motor by chamber 9 and cage 27, a window 17 permitting observation of the oil-level in the former. Air enters the pump via inlet valve 11 and leaves via outlet valve 12 and discharge conduit 13, a manometer 14 indicating the discharge pressure. An air filtering system composed of compartments 45 and 46 is interposed between a receiving coinpartment 44 and a discharge compartment 47.
rihe hereinabove described assembly functions as follows: shaft 3, driven by rotor 19, drives pinion 6 in mesh with gears 4, 4 which latter communicate their movement to pitman 2 through the intermediary of pin 7 so as to reciprocate piston 1 and compress the air in cylinder 8. The compressor and motor structures are conventional and their detailed operation need not be described, the essential novelty of the invent-ion lying in the drive assembly and the mode of isolating the latter from the motor.
rEhe above described form of construction has the advantage of completely isolating the pump and motor assemblies and provides a balanced drive 4, 4 capable of being quickly assembled and adjusted with relation to connecting rod 2. The effectiveness of the drive is embraced by positioning discs 4, 4 symmetrically with relation to the axis of cylinder 8 and pinion 6 so that the axis thereof intersects the latter. Lubricant is poured into chamber 9 and constitutes a splash system for the various pump elements which remains isolated from the motor and its various windings.
What I claim is in combination, an electric motor having a rotatable shaft and rotor, a pinion keyed to said shaft, a pair of pinions meshing with said first named pinion and having an anis of rotation positioned below that of the motor shaft, a pitman connected eccentrically to each of said pair of second pinions said pitman presenting a bent portion adapted to clear said iirst named pinion, and a casing,
adapted to contain lubricating iiuid, extending around all of the aforesaid pinions, said casing having a wall extending between the rotor of the motor and the pinion mounted on the shaft of the latter, whereby lubrieat ing fluid contained in said Casing and iin- Inersing a portion of said'pair of pinions is prevented from Coining in Contact with said rotor.
n testimony whereof l have signed this speciiication.
