This invention relates to atomizers of the type adapted to be carried in the pocket, in a hand bag, or to be supported on a suitable surface.
An object of the invention is to provide a thin, compact, atomizer which can be readily carried in the pocket without danger of the liquid contents thereof leaking out or evaporating, or the parts becoming useless by reason of lodgement of dirt or dust therein.
A further object is to provide an atomizer construction in which, when the various operating elements are not in use, they are locked in such relative positions to the body thereof that they do not form objectionable Vprojections which'would catch in the clothing or in thel lining of a hand bag and tear the same. j

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device comprises a casing 10, having a removable cover plate 11 carrying the working parts of the atomizer, said cover plate being removably retained upon the casing, as by a lug 12 prodetail section on line 3, 3 of jecting into a slot in the wall of the casing and removable therefrom by springing inwardly the side wall of the casing to clear the lug. v i
Rigidly carried With the plate 11, there is shown a cylinder 13, an air pump comprising said cylinder and a piston 14 carried by a piston rod 15 sliding in a plug 16 having screw threaded engagement with the Wall of the cylinder, said piston rod upwardly terminating in a thumb piece 17 by which4 the pump` may be operated. i
j To force .the piston 14 upwardly in the cylinder 13, there is shown a compression spring 18 acting between the bottom of the cylinder and the under side of the piston 14. The bottom of the cylinder is shown as closed by'a screw plug 19, sockets 20, 21 being provided to receive a tool to unscrew the plug.
To arrange the receptacle22 for containing a liquid to be atomized, as a perfume, the plate 11 is shown as provided with a boss 23 extending above the same and having a sleeve 24 passing through the plate and extended below the same; said sleeve 24 being sui'- rounded by a stopper 25, preferably of a resilient material, such as rubber, cork or the like, which stopper is adapted to frictionally engage and close an opening 26 in the receptacle 22. Obviously the stopper element 25 may have a screw threaded engagement with the opening in the receptacle 22 if desired.
To draw liquid to be atomized, there is shown a tube 27 projecting to a point adjacent the bottom of the receptacle 22 and terminating in a no-zzle 28 above the boss 23. To atomize material drawn by aspiration out of the nozzle 28, there is shown an air conduit 29 passing through the plate 11, at 30, and so directed that air will 'cross the opening vof the nozzle 28, the other end of the tube 29 opening at 31 into the chamber of the pump, near the bottom of cylinder 13. Pressure upon'the thumb piece 17 will therefore compress air in t-he chamber of the pump which, escaping from the opening of tube 29,- will cause the atomization of liquid from the reccptacle 22.
To close the nozzle 28 when the device is not in use and to cover the working' parts upon the plate 11, there is shown a cap 32 pivotally mounted upon an axis 33 in a pair of ears 34, 35, projecting upwardly from the plate 11, the cap 32 providing a closure 36 having screw threaded engagement at 37 with thecap and having la lock nut 38 secured thereto. To press the cap 32 to open osition, there is shown a spring 39 coiled about the axis 33` and having one end pressing upwardly against the underside of the cap, as at 40,' 100 and the remaining end 41 pressing against its plate l1. Thus, there is provided an arrangement comprising the pivoted cap or member 32 which, in predetermined position, prevents passage of the liquid medium from its casing.
To hold the cap 32 in its lowered position when the device is not in use, the material of the cap is carried past the pivot 33 into alu 44, and a second lug 45 is shown carried by 51e thumb piece 17 which, in the closed position of the device, underlies the lug 44 1n which position the spring 18 being compressed and being stiffer than spring 39 lwill hold the parts in the position shown in F ig. 2.
When the thumb piece 17 is slightly depressed and revolved, the lug 45 moves substantially laterally With respect to the path of movement of the piston rod or plunger 15 whereupon cap 32 will immediately fly to open position v and the piston 14 will immediately be raised to its uppermost position ready for actuation.
To prevent accidental release of the lugs 44, 45, the lug 44 is desirably formed with downturned ears 46, 47, retaining the lug 45 against rotation when in a closed position.
To prevent accidental disengagement of the stopper 25 from the opening 26, there is shown a leaf spring 42, secured at 43 to the inner surface of the bottom Wall of the casing 10, and providing upward pressure against the receptacle 22. When the latch member 12 is released, the leaf spring 42 will lift the receptacle 22, carrying with it the cover plate 11 and the pump cylinder 13.
It is obvious that the receptacle 22, which is desirably formed of some metal as silver which will not be affected by the liquid to be atomized, may be replaced by a glass vial or the like within the spirit of the invention.
In the form shown in F ig. 4, the casing 10 has the plate 11 permanently secured thereto and the pump cylinder 13 has screw threaded engagement with said plate, forming a liquid tight joint therewith, the casing then becoming the receptacle for the liquid to be atomized, which may be filled therein as by means of a filling opening in its bottom, closed by a screw plug.
While I have described my invention in detail and with respect to a preferred form thereof, I do not desire to be limited to such details or form since many changes and modifications may be made and the invention embodied in other forms IWithout departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broader aspects. Hence I desire to cover all modifications and forms coming within the language or scope ofany one or more of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I claim:
1. An atomizer comprising a caslng, a nozzle disposed on topof the casing, a pump plunger projecting from the casing, means tending at all times to move the plunger out of the casing, a pivoted cover on said casing normally adapted to cover said nozzle, means tending to move the cover to position to uncover the nozzle, and means on the cover engaging the plunger When in a predetermined position to hold thecover in its closed position and the plunger in a depressed position.
2. An atomizer comprising a casing, a nozzle disposed on top of the casing, a pump plunger projecting from the casing, a spring engaging the lunger to at all times tend to move it out o the casing, a' pivoted cover on said casing normally adapted to cover said nozzle, a spring engaging said cover and tending to move it to a position to uncover the nozzle, and a projection on thev cover adapted to lie over a portion of the plunger when the latter is in a depressed position to hold it in such position and to maintain the cover in its closed position.
3. In an atomizer, a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, a conduit extending into said casing, atomizing means carried by said casing for causing the liquid medium to traverse said conduit and pass therefrom as a fine mist or spray, a pivoted member carried by said casing for closing said conduit, said pivoted member being disposed above the top Wall of said casing, having a closure section movable alo-ng an arc-shaped path toward 'and from the open end of said conduit, and remaining in either an open or a closed position independently of manual control, means for biasing said pivoted member to a position opening said conduit, and means for holding 'the pivoted member in closed position.
4. In an atomizer, a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, a conduit extending into said casing from the top wall thereof, atomizing means carried by said casing for causing the liquid medium to traverse said conduit and pass therefrom as a fine mist or spray, a cap shaped member, and spring actuated means for retaining said member in a position where it forms a housing for the upper end of said conduit, said cap-shaped member having its side Wall structure depending toward said top casing wall and being pivoted so Jthat the upper end of said conduit may be exposed to permit passage therefrom of said fine mist or spray, said lOl) atomizing means comprising a reeiprocatory plunger cooperative with said cap-shaped member.
5. In anl atomizer, a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, a conduit extending into said casing, atomizing means carried by said casing for causing the liquid medium to traverse said conduit and pass therefrom as a line' mist or spray, a pivoted cap-shaped member for closing said conduit, a closure the latter toward open position, said atomizing means' comprising a reciprocatory plunger cooperative with said cap-shaped member.
6. In an atomizer, the combination with a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, and means for atomizing said liquid medium, said means comprising a member movable in opposite directions along a path, of means for retaining said member in predete'rn'iinedv position along said path, said last named means comprising a member movable independently of said iirst named member and constructed and arranged to prevent passage of the liquid medium from said casing.
7. In an atomizer, the combination With a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, a conduit extending into said casing, and means comprising a reciprocatory plunger foratomizing said liquid medium, said plunger while moving in one direction producing a stream of atomizing air, of means for retaining said plunger at or adjacent its limit of movement in said one direction, said last named means comprising a movable member coactable directly with said plunger, said member controlling. the sealing of said conduit.
8. In an atomizer, the combination with a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, a conduit extending into said casing, and means comprising as reciprocatory plunger for atomizing said liquid medium, said plunger While moving in one direction producing a stream of atomizing air, of means for retaining said plunger at or adjacent its limit of movement in said one direction, said last named means comprising a mechanical var rangement including a .pivoted cap-shaped member which in predetermined position covers said conduit.
9. In an atomizer, the combination with a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, a conduit extending into said casing, and means .for atomizing said liquid medium, said means comprising a membermovable inv opposite directions along a path, said member while movingin one direction along said path producing a stream of atomizing air, of means for retaining said member in a predetermined position along said path, said last named means comprising a movable member disengagablyv connected with said first named member, said member controlling the sealing of said conduit.
10. 11.\In an atomizer, the combination with a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, a conduit extending into said casing, and means comprising a reciprocatory `plunger for atomizing said liquid medium, said plunger While moving in one direction producing a stream of atomizing air, of means for retaining said plunger at or adjacent its limit of movement in said one direction, said last named means comprising a pivoted capshaped member forming a disengageable connection With said plunger and which in predetermined position orms a cover for saidI conduit, said plunger being freely reciprocatory when said connection is disengaged.
12. Inan atomizer, the combination with a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, and means for atomizing said liquid medium, said first named means comprising a springcontrolled reciprocatory plunger having knob structure, and conduit structure from which the atomized liquid passes as a fine mist or spray, ofmeans for retaining said reciprocatoryplunger in substantially its retracted position, said last named means comprising a pivoted member carried by said casing and having a section forming a disengageable connection with said knob strucf ture, said pivoted member in predetermined position overlying said conduit structure.
13. ln an atomizer, the combination with a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium, and means comprising a reciprocatory plunger for atomizing said liquid medium, said plunger While moving in one direction producing a stream of atomizing air, and means for biasing said plunger in a direction the reverseof saidy one direction, of means for retaining said plunger at or adjacent its limit of movement in said one direction, said last named means comprising a pivoted member carried by said casing and forming a disengageable connection with said plunger, said pivoted member in predetermined position A preventing passage of the liquid medium from said casing, and means for biasing said pivoted member toward open position.
y14. In an atomizer, the combination with a casing adapted to contain a liquid medium,
means comprising a reciprocatory vplunger for atomi/ng said liquid medium, said plunger while moving in one direction producing a stream of atomizing air, and means for biasing said plunger in a direction the reverse of said one direction, of'means for reisn' taining said plunger at or adjacent its limit of movement in said one direction, said last named means comprising a pivoted member carried by said casing and forming a disengageable connection with said plunger, said plunger being freely reciprocatory when said connection is disengaged, said pivoted member in predetermined position preventing passage of said liquid medium from said casing, and means for biasing said pivoted member from said predetermined position, said biasing means snapping said pivoted member to open position when said connection is disengaged.

An atomizer comprising a casing, a nozzle disposed on top of the casing, a pump plunger projecting from the casing, a spring engaging the plunger to at all times tend to move it out of the'casing, a pivoted cover on said casing normally adapted to cover said nozzle, means carried by said cover for sealing said nozzle, and a projection on the cover i adapted to lie over a portion of the lunger member and laterall 55 li when the latter is in a depressed position to hold it in such position and to maintain the cover in its closed position whereby substantially the maximum effect of said spring holds said sealing means in engagement with said nozzle.

An atomizer comprising a casing adapted to have a liquid medium disposed therewithin, a conduit extending into said casing, an oscillatory member for closing said conduit, a reciprocatory plunger for atomizing said liquid medium, and means forming a disengageable connection between said oscillatory member and plunger Whereby the former remains in closed position and the latter is held in depressed position, said means comprising a member manually movable laterally with respect to the path of said plunger to disengage said connection.

An atomizer comprising a casing adapted to have a liquid medium disposed therewithin, a'conduit extending into said casing, an oscillatory member for closing said conduit, a reciprocatory plunger for atomizingsaid liquid medium, and a member which coacts with said oscillatory member and 'said plunger whereby the former is held in closed position and the latter in depressed position, said second-named member being movable with respect to said oscillatory of the path of said plunger to permit t e former to move to open position and to permit free reciprocation of the latter.

An atomizer comprising a casing adapted to have a liquid medium disposed therewithin, a conduit extending into sai-r casing, an oscillatory member forclosing said conduit, means comprising a reciprocatory plunger for atomizing said liquid medium, said oscillatory member and said plunger being movable with respect to each other, and a releasable connection for retaining said plunger in depressed position, said connection being released in response to rotational movement of said plunger about its longitudinal axis.

An atomizer comprising a casing adapted to have a liquid medium disposed therewithin, a conduit extending intosaid casing, an oscillatory member for closing said conduit, spring means for biasing said oscillatory member to open position, means comprising a reciprocatory plunger for atomizing said liquid medium, said oscillatory member and'said plunger being movable with respect to eachother, and a releasable connection for retaining said plunger in depressed position, said -connection being released in response to rotational movement of said plunger about its longitudinal axis, said spring means moving said oscillatory member to open position after release of said connection.

An atomizer comprising a casing adapted to have a liquid medium disposed therewithin, a conduit extending into said casing, and a plurality of members movable with respect to 'each other, one of said meinbers bein adapted to close said conduit, another o said members serving as a reciprocatory plunger for atomizing said liquid medium, means for retaining said one of said members in closed position and said plunger in 'depressed position, said means comprising a releasable connection, said connection being released in response to movement of a surface laterally with respect to the path of movement of said plunger.`

An atomizer comprising a casing adapted to have a liquid medium 'disposed therewithin, a conduit extending into said casing, a closure member for closing said conduit and mounted to turn with respect to said casing, means `comprising a reciprocatory plunger for atniozing said liquid mcdium, a spring means tending to move said plunger upwardly against manual depression, a 'releasable connection for retaining said plunger in depressed position and the closure member in closed position, said connection being released in response to rotational movement of said plunger about its longitudinal axis, and a second spring means for turning said closure member and retailiing the same away from the region ot the outlet of said conduit after releasing the said connection, to permit unobstriuzted passage of atomized liquid from said conduit during reciprocation of sai-d plunger.
