Description

March 31, 1931. J. E. BURGESS CALENDAR Filed March 16, 1929 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 31, 1931 nrrnn STATES FATE Free JOSEPH E. BURGESS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN LITHOGRAPH'IC' COMPANY, INC., OF NEXV YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK CALENDAR Application. filed March 16, 1929.
This invention relates to calendars and other display devices intended to be hung upon a wall and formed from a. number of connected leaves which are to be serially dis 5 played. The object of the invention is to furnish such a calendar or display device with latching means for holding the sheets conipactly folded for mailing and other transportation, and for holding the sheets in display 1 when hung upon a wall, part of the latching means serving not only as a latch but also as a means for suspension.
In the accompanying drawings one practicable embodiment of my invention is illus- 15 trated, wherein Figure 1 shows in perspective a calendar made in accordance with my invention wherein the sheets are shown compactly folded and secured together by means of the latch.
Fig. 2 represents the device opened up, the latch serving to hold some of the sheets in display and others in reserve for future use, the latch when in this position serving as a suspension means for engaging a hook on 25 the wall for hanging the calendar up.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken at a plane at about the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on a plane at about the line 4-4 of 2, and
Fig. 5 is a detail showing the latch or suspension device from the rear of the Fig. 2 position.
According to the present illustration my invention is shown made up of a number of sheets 7 held together by some suitable means,
as for instance staples 8, and creased for folding upon the line of stapling as at 9. When thus laid out, each sheet will of course have four display surfaces, two of which, 10 ans 11, are illustrated in Fig. 2.
One of the sheets designated 7 in Fig. 2, which may be assumed to be the outermost sheet and in some instances formed of a diiferent quality or thickness of paper than the other sheets, might be called the backing or cover sheet, because when the device is hung upon the wall it will be on the back, and when the device is folded together as in the Figure 1 position it will be the cover. One face of this sheet, as for instance 12, can
Serial No. 347,498.
readily be used for carrying advertising or the address of the person to whom it will be sent if it is forwarded by mail or by messenger.
The free edges of all the sheets, with the eX- eeption of portion 13 and the cover sheet, are formed with longitudinal slots 14 inwardly of the free edge, such slots leaving a thin strip of material 15. These slots 14 are formed to receive alatch 16 in the form of a flap cut from the portion 13 of the sheet 7. By reference to Fig. 5, it will be seen that the side cutting as at 17 runs inwardly of the sheet past its free edge, this cutting being of sufiicient extent to permit the flap when folded at about the position of the dotted line 18 to pass through the slots 14, and, owing to the flexibility of the paper, to fold over against the portions 'for bringing this flap into a position to suspend the calendar, as for instance when a hook or nail is passed through the perforation 19.
\Vhen the calendar is issued and is intended for either transportation or display by 'a retailer, it is preferably folded up in the coinpact condition illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, in which case the latching flap is bent on the lines illustrated. at 20 and 21 in Fig. 5 over all the free edges of the other sheets and passed into the slot 14: of the portion 22 of the backing sheet 7 (see Fig. 3). l Vhen in this position the flap 16 protects all the slots 14.- and the narrow strips 15 at the free edge outwardly of the slots, whereby these parts are not injured in handling and transportation.
W hen the ultimate consumer or user of the 1 calendar receives it packed in the Figs. 1 and 3 position, it is merely necessary to remove the latching flap from the slot 14 in which it is tucked, spread the calendar out in the Fig. 2 position with the proper sheets 10 and 11 in display to view, and pass the flap 16 through the slots '14 of the sheets which it is desired to retain elevated and held against the upper portion of the back. This latching flap or tab then being in the position illustrated'in Figs. 2 and 1 forms a convenient means for hanging the device upon a nail or hook carried. by the wall,
Although but one embodiment of the invention has been shown in the drawings by way of illustration, yet it will be apparent that changes may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention. 7
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. As an article of manufacture, a plurality of calendar sheets centrally folded and hinged together, one of the outermost sheets at its free edge carrying a flexible latching flap, the free edges of the other sheets being formed with slots for receiving the latching flap, the slots being located in position for the passage therethrough collectively of the latching flap, and the latching flap being of sufficient length when thread ing the sheets to afford a suspension device for hanging the calendar.
2. As an article of manufacture, a plurality of calendar sheets centrally folded and hinged together, one of the outermost sheets at its free edge carrying a flexible latching flap, the free edges of the other sheets being formed with slots for receiving the latching flap, the slots being located in position for the passage therethrough collectively of the latching flap, the latching flap being of sufficient length when threading the sheets to afford a suspension device for hanging the calendar, and the slot in the outermost sheet being located in position to receive the flap when this is passed over all the sheets for latchingthe whole closed in a handling condition.
3. As an article of manufacture, a plurality of calendar sheets centrally folded and hinged together, one of the outermost sheets at its free edge carrying a flexible latching flap, the free edges of the other sheets being formed with slots for receiving the latching flap, the slots being located in position for the passage therethrough collectively of the latching flap, the latching flap being of sufficient length when threading the sheets to afford a suspension device for hanging the calendar, and the slot in the outermost sheet being located in position to receive the flap when this is passed over all the sheets for latching the whole closed in a handling condition, each slot and the thin strip of material between the slot and the free edge of the sheet being formed to lie within the protection of the flap when so positioned.
4. As an article of manufacture, a plurality of calendar sheets centrally folded and hinged together, one of the outermost sheets at its free edge carrying a flexible latching flap, the sid s of the flap being cut inwardly beyond such free edge, the free edges of the other sheets being formed with slots for receiving the latching flap, the slots being located in position for the passage therethrough collectively of the latching flap, and
I through collectively of the latching flap, and
the latching flap being of sulficientlength when threading the sheets to afford a suspension device for hanging the calendar, the
slot in the outermost sheet being located in position to receive the flap when this is passed over all the sheets for latching the whole closed in a handling condition.
In witness whereof, I hereby afliX my signature this 13th day of March, 1929.
JOSEPH E. BURGESS.
