This invention relates to smoking pipes, and hasfor one of its objects to provide anarticle of this character which shall be adapted to deliver a cool, satisfying smoke that will not burn the tongue. i

v To attain this and other objects, the invention comprehends the provision of a ipe having a filterin and cooling means which shall consist of to acco in a shredded or other 10 finely divided state and through which the smoke will ass on its way from the bowl to the mouthplece of the pipe.

The invention also comprehends the provision of a pipe embodying means arranged 15 within its stem and adapted to hold a tube, containing the filtering and cooling medium and so support the tube as to protect the medium from any saliva enterin the stem.

The bowl 1- is provided with a boss 4 which is preferably formed integrallytherewith-and is provided with a passage 5 communicating with the bowl. A coupllng 6 is arranged on the boss 4, and is shown in 7. The coupling 6 has its front edge flanged inwardly into engagement with the screw threads of the boss 4, as shown at 8, so as to prevent it from having any accidental turning movement on the 'boss. The stem 2 which may. be straight, as shown in the drawings, or curved longitudinally, is provided with laterally enlarged and internally screw threaded ends 9 and" 10. v The front end 9 of the stem 2 is arranged on thecoupling 6 and enga the external screw the stem 2 receives the externally screw threaded front end 12 of the mouthpiece 3. While I have shown the stem provided with enlarged ends through the medium of which it is connected to'the bowl and the mouth-, piece, I wish it understood that such ends may be omitted and the stem connected to 7 theother parts in any well known or appro priate manner.

The coupling 6 has its rear end closed, and is provided at said end thereof with a hollow boss 13 which is arranged within and 7' with an openin 14 registering with the-passage 5. The ss 13' is internally screw threaded, as shown at 15, and it is provided with a conical outer surface which tapers in 1 the directionof. its rear end. When the pipe is in use, thesmoke passes directly from the bowl. 1. into the filterin medium 21,-and after passing through the fi 1 ,terin and cooling medium it will enter the mouthpiece 3. It will thus be understood that the smoke will be freed of many of its impurities and its temperature materially lowered, with the result that the pipe will deliver a cool satisiying smoke that will not burn the tongue. As the cartridge20 is sup-' ported by the holder 17 out of contact with the stem 2, the filtering and cooling medium 21 will be protected from any saliva enterab y engaged with the holder 17, and as the stem 2 is detachably'secured to the bowl 1, the. cartridge may be 'remored and a new one substituted therefor easily. and quickly. While I have described the principle of the invention, together with what I now consider to be 'the best embodimentsthereof, I desire to haveiit understood that the embodiments shown are merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the invention and claimed.

What I claim is:

1. In a combination of the class demribed,

a bowl, a stem, a mouthpiece, a coupling connected to said bowl, said coupling having a hollow boss which is internally screw threaded and has a conicalouter surface, a conical holder having a reduced screw threaded stem, said last mentioned stem being adapted to screw into said. boss; at which time the conical holder will extend toward said mouthpiece, or said holder bein adapted tofit upon the conical surface of saii the screw threaded stem will extend toward iaid mouthpiece, as and for the purposssset on]:
