Description

June 23, 1931. w.' H. GREELEY BOOKHOLDER Filed D80. 16. 1929 Patented June 23, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAIK H. GREELEY, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GINN AND COM- PANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A COPARTNERSHIP IBOOKI-IOLDER Application filed December 16, 1929. Serial No. 414,608.
The present invention relates to book holders particularly adapted for holding books in open position as for purposes of display or to permit copying.
The object of the present invention is to provide a book holder adapted to maintain in open position a book of substantially any size and having covers of any thickness. To this end, the present invention comprises the book holder hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view of the preferred form a holder and Fig. 2 is perspective view of a book held in open position by the holder.
The illustrative embodiment of the invention comprises a wire of resilient material formed in the shape shown in Fig. 1. The holder has a center bar 4 together with two resilient clip portions 6 formed perpendicular thereto at the ends. comprises a straight length of wire 8 and a curved length 10 immediately adjacent thereto. The lengths 8 and 10 are separated by a considerable distance at the lower end of the clip and are brought into close converging relationship at the open end. Each extreme end of the wire is formed with a loop 12 to form a smooth end and protect against catching or tearing of the material of the book.
In use, the book la is supported as shown in Fig. 2, the loops 6 engaging with the covers. Upon engagement with a cover, the converging portions of the clip tend to spread into substantially parallel relationship, thus gripping the cover over a considerable surface. The invention has the advantage that by virtue of the enlarged bottom portion of each loop, covers of a considerable thickness may be accommodated, whereas by the restricted space aflorded by the upper end of the loop, suflicient resiliency is afforded to hold the thinnest covers as firmly as is necessary. The holder is therefore adapted for general application to book covers of a considerable thickness.
Having described the invention, what I claim is:
A book cover holder comprising a piece Each clip portion 6 of wire formed with a center bar, and two resilient clips only, each formed perpendic ularly to the center bar at the ends thereof,
WILLIAM H. GREELEY.
CERTIFICATE OF CORRECTION.
