f As is well known to those skilled in the art it is frequently necessary to place the cocks of hydrants 'at considerable distances below the surfaces of the ground where they will not be subjected to freezing temperatures.
This is particularly true where hydrants areV used in railroad yards, stock yards and the like. It has been the practice to operate these cocks by means of rods adapted to be inserted downwardly intoVA openings or recesses and 15 into engagement with the heads of the valves. Each valve has supported the weight of the Vrod but the construction hasV been objectionable because, should a heavy object be dropped n on the upper end ofthe rod or drawn therethe rod would be forced downwardly to such an extent as against its seat. Therefore been impossible to turn the valve away vfrom the position in which it has been jammed,
