GOEBEL AND CARL BARTELS, F HAIT'IILTON, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE MOSLER SAFE COMPANY, OF HAMILTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK DIAL COVER Application filed March 12, 1930 Serial No. 435,088.
. This invention relates to a protective cover or shield for combination dials such as those on vaults, safes, and the like, whereby tampering with such dials is rendered impossible.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which may be readily moved into and out of operative position.
Another object is to provide such a device which may be locked in operative position by standard positive locking means.
Another object is to provide such a means which is simple in construction and operation.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and set forth in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a front elevational view of the device of this invention operatively positioned upon a safe, or the like.
Fig. 2 is a view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The device, in general, comprises an annular recessed cup member adapted to be placed over a dial, and provided with an annular central openin through which the dial knob projects. g pair of complementary, substantially semi-circular housing members are pivotally attached to the face of the cup member above the knob and are adapted to be suspended upon and locked together over the knob whereby the latter is rendered inaccessible.
With reference to the drawings: an annular cup member 5, having an annular, central aperture 6, is superimposed over a dial which is secured to the body 7 of the vault, safe, or the like. Member 5 substantially covers the plate portions 8 of the dial, the knob 9 of the latter projecting through aperture 6. The portion 10 immediately adjacent aperture 6 is preferably flat. Upon portion 10, a pair of complementary hous Members 11 and 12 each com toseat in depressions 21 formed in members 11 and 12, for limiting pivotal movement thereof. Each member 11 and 12 is provided with an interior flange 23 having an arcuate notch 24 in its edge for cooperating with a similar notch in the opposite memher.
Then members 11 and 12 are in their normal, downwardly depending position, they completely encase knob 9, the notches 23 being of such size as to engage the reduced shank portion 25 of the knob. The bow portion 27 of a suitable lock 26, is passed through the aligned openings 18 in lugs 17, whereby the housing members 11 and 12 are rendered non-separable. In this position, the flange 23 is interposed between plate portion 8 and knob 9 of the dial, thus precluding forward movement or removal of the housing members 11 and 12. When lock 26 is removed the housing members may be swung to the position shown in dotted line (Fig. 1) for rendering the dial knob accessible by removal. of the shield therefrom.
It is evident that devices of this invention are equally useful upon other forms of control the safe and tending to swing downwardly when the knob and dial are being used, is obviated.
Vhat is claimed is:
1. A shield for use upon safes and the like provided with dials having plate and knob portions, said shield comprising an aper- ,tured cup member adapted to be superimposed over the dial for substantially covering the plate portion thereof and for permitting projection of the knob through.
the aperture in the cup member, and a pair of complementary housing member-s pivotally mounted upon the cup member and adapted to be lock-ed together for enclosing,
the knob, when the shield is in position,
2. A shield for use upon safes and the like provided with dials and control knobs, said shield comprising an apertured cup member adapted to be superimposed over a dial with the knob projecting through the aperture of,
said cup member, and a pair of complementary housing member-s pivotally mounted upon the cup member and provided with c 'apertured lugs adapted 'to receive a suitable lock element whereby the housing members of the positioned shield may be locked togetherfor enclosing the knob.
3. A shield for use upon safes and the like I; provided with dials and control knobs hav- 20 ingreduced shanks, said shield comprising an apertured cup member adapted to superimposed over a dial with the knob projecting through the aperture of said c-u-p member, a pair of complementary housing members 'pivotal ly mounted upon the "cup member and adapted to be "brought into abut;
ment forenclosing the knob, complementary engage the reduced shank portion of the knob, and'lock means onthe housing members whereby the shield may be -secured in position upon the knob.
4. As a new' article- 0t manufacture, a i "quick detachable shield for me upon safes :means on the housing members adapted to orthe like provided with a dial and a dial actuating extending knob having a reduced comprising an apertured cu'p that may be slipped bodily over-andbeyond said knob axially thereof, pivotal meanin means on the cup member, and eempiemen- 'tarily notched knob covering members-"associated with the pivotal mounting 'mea ns'a'nd adapted to cover the knob while fittingwith the notches disposed about the "shank 'of the knobmember.
5; a new article of manufacture, a quick detachable shieldfor use upon safes or the like provided with a dial and a dial actuating extending knob having a reduced shank associated with the dial, said. shield shank associated with the dial, said shield comprising an apertured -cup member that 4 knob axially thereof, pivotal mounting means on the cup member, and complementarily notched knob covering members assomay be slipped bodily over and beyond said I ciated' with the pivotal mounting means and I adapted to cover the knob while fitting with a i the notches disposed about the 'shanl'rofthe knob member and lock means on jthe knob covering members whereby the shield is se cured'inposition about the. shank of "the;
knob.
