19 provide improved means In another of its aspects, my invention relates to leggings and particularly to leggings equipped with slide fasteners.

The principal object of my invention is to in' an article equipped with slide operated fastening ,means for facilitating the operation of.such' fastening means.

Another object is to provide an article of wearing apparel embodying a slide fastener with means for anchoring an opening end portion of the fastening device during operation thereof, so that the fastener may be operated by one hand of the wearer.

A further object is to provide an article embodying a slide fastener with detachable strap means adapted to connect the free ends of the edges to be fastened or unfastened and prevent separation of the same during the operation of the fastening device in or' der to facilitate the operation thereof and to-also anchor one opening side portion of the fastener during its operation.

These being among the objects of the present invention the same consists of certain features ofconstruction and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and thenclaimed, having the above and other objects in view.

Considerable difficulty has been experi- 'enced in obtaining easyand satisfactory operation of slide operated fastening devices when used in connection with leggings and the like. the use of leggings and apparel which are each provided with 11 is preferably'bifurcated and one embod ing legging parts, movement of the foot w en wa kin exerts a tension around the lower edge 0 the legging which ordinarily tends to move the slider of the fastener and disconnect the interlocked parts of the same. This is a decided disadvantage in an article of this nature.

Another disadvantage in the use of slide operated fasteners in such articles as previously used is the difliculty of opening such fasteners. The edges of the opening end of such fastening devices are not anchored as in the construction of my invention and therefore the interlocking portions of the fastener distort and flex during attempted opening of the fastener whenever the opening ends are not manually held. In the prior construction referred to, times jams so that the wearer is compelled to use both hands to unfasten the garment. One hand would be used to pull on the released end of the garment edge in order to maintain the interlocking portions of the fastener in a straight line while the other band would operate the slider. The present invention. is intended to overcome these disadvantages.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, the invention is illustrated in connection with a leg covering, such as a knee length legging or one leg portion of a body garment. As shown in Fig. 1, this garment has a leg covering portion 1 and a foot portion 12. The garment is provided with a narrow one side extending upwardly from the end of the foot portion 12, the edges 3 and 4 of one stringer 5 of a slide fastener. One end of an instep strap 11 is secured to the side of the foot portion 12 op osite the fastening device. The other end of the strap branch is permanently secured to the other side of the leg portion adjacent the edge 3 of the foot or of ortion 12, as shown'in Fig. 3. The other ranch 9 of'the instep strap .11 carrles the socket ortion 10 of a su table snap fastener.. The foot portion 12 carries the plug portion 8 of the snap, fastener at its lower end adjacent the edged of the opening 2,

which plug 8 is adapted to be received by the socket portion 10. It is to be understood, however, that a hook and eye, buttonand buttonhole or any suitable type of se arable fastener may be used equally as wel as the snap fastener just mentioned. The instep strap 11 may be of elastic webbing, leather, the same material as the body of-the legging. As illustrated in Fig. 2 this instep strap 11 may be provided with a buckle 13 for adjustment of the length thereof if desired.

In putting on the garment the fastener is open as indicated in Fig. 3 and the wearer adjusts the instep strap to the correct position by slipping it under the heel from the rear. He then moves the slider 6 downwardly by means of the tab 7 to interlock the fastener elements. The socket 10 of the snap fastener is then snapped over its cooperating plug portion 8. The garment then hasthe appearance illustrated in Fig. 1, with the slider 6 in its-lowermost position, which may or may not be covered by the upper end of the instep strap. To remove the garment the wearer pulls upwardly on the tab 7 of the slider 6 to separate the interlocked sections 5 of the fastener. The strap 11 serves as an anchor for the fastener section 5 adjacent the edge 3 during upward movement of the slider 6. This substantially maintains the section 5 in a straightline so that it will not be distorted and so that it will not be necessary for the wearer to hold the foot portion 12 while the slider is moved. It will be readily seen that if the free end of the edge 3 is not held in anchored position by the instep strap the slider 6 moves hard and tends to jam during'its unlocking movement. This general- 1y causes the wearer to use both hands while removing the garment, one hand to support the free end of the edge 3 and the other to move the slider 6. The connection of the free ends of edges 3 and 4 by the end portion 9 of the instep strap 11 serves to prevent unintentional opening of the fastening device.

These features of the present invention are particularly advantageous-in view, of the fact that practically all leg coverings and garments of this type are worn by children.

It is to be understood that the article shown is used for illustration only and that the present invention is equally as adaptable to many other articles, also that various changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described without departing from the spirit and substance of my invention, the scope of which defined in the. appended claims. What I claim is:
