UNITED STATES PATENT OE IoE.
WILLIAM ABBOTT, OF ESPY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE W. MOEWE-N, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMEN T IN EAR-MUFF LERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,359, dated October 17, 1876; application filed August 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM ABBOTT, of Espy, in the county of Columbia, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear- Mufflcrs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of earmufflers in which the pad-frames are hinged or swiveled to the head-piece and it consists in forming each end of the head-piece with two bends at suitable distances apart to form bearings, upon which the pad-frame will turn by means of perforated plates or ears attached to the pad-frame, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my ear-muffler.
A represents the head-piece, made simply of a piece of spring-wire, bent in suitable form to fit the head. Each end of the head-piece A is bent to form-a bend, a, at the end, and
stantially the form shown.
another bend, b, at suitable distance inward from the same. B B represent the pad-frames, each made of a single piece of wire, in sub-,
of each frame B are fastened perforated plates or cars d 01, through which the ends of the head-piece are passed, so that said plates or ears will rest in the bends a b, which thus form bearings for the pad-frames, and upon which they turn, so that the muffler-pads can adjust themselves in proper positions.
I do not broadly claim an ear-muftler having the frames for the ear-pads hinged to the head-piece which connects them under this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an ear-muffler, the combination of the head-piece A, having the bends a b at each end, and the pad-frames B B, provided with the perforated plates or ears d d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of August, 1876.
-WILLIAM ABBOTT.
