Description

UNrrnn S'rATEs PATENT *Qrrrca ADOLPH PEARL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLUG-TOBACCO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,466, dated October 17, 1876; application filed September 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLPH PEARL, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Manufactured Tobacco; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, which forms part of this specification.
This invention consists in a new article of manufactured tobacco, which is made by cutting plug-tobacco into shreds or pieces without destroying the form of the plug, and subsequently inclosing said cut plug in a case, band, Wrapper, or envelope, -ready for use, either for smoking or chewing purposes.
This mode of preparing and putting up plugtobacco enables the purchaser to see that he is purchasing genuine cut plug; also to see what the quality of the tobacco is, inasmuch as the original grain ofthe plug is exposed to view. Such advantage is not attainable when plug-tobacco is cut up into an indiscriminate mass without any regard to preserving the original form'and grain of the plug.
Another advantageis the convenience which is afforded for handling, carrying,. and using the tobacco, by reason of the compact and flat form in which the cut or shredded plug is retained, and the facility with which portions of it may be drawn out or detached, either for chewing or for making into cigarettes, or for smoking in the pipe.
It may here be observed, before describing my invent-ion as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, that various degrees of coarseness or ineness may be given to the cuts, and that the latter may be made in various directions, and either entirely through the plug, or only mainly therethrough, and so as to leave a thin uncut backing, which Will serve the purpose of holding the cut mass together without materially or at all interfering with the tearing or detaching of portions of the cut plug, as required for use.
Figure l represents a View, in perspective, of a cut plug, in accordance with my invention, and as put up in an envelope ready for sale or use, the cuts being made in close relation with one another and transversely of the plug. Fig. 2 is a like View of said plug, on a reduced scale, and as removed from the envelope, which holds it in form; also, showing stantially as specified.
a .strip or single cut portion as being torn or detached from the remainder of the plug. Fig. 3 is a view, in perspective, of a plug with the cuts made in a longitudinal direction of the latter; and Fig. 4, a like View of a plug with the cuts made both longitudinally and transversely through it.
In Fig. 1, A is the plug, having a series of closely-arranged transverse cuts, b, made in or through it, and which may be ei'ected by a sharp knife having a reciprocating action, while the plug is intermittently fed forward under the knife and through a tubular holder into the envelope B, which is arranged ready to receive said cut plug.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the other figures of the drawing, Figf'2 showing one of the strips or cut portions, Z5, as in the act of being torn off or detached 'for use as a'chew, or'for working" it into a cigarette, or for smoking ina pipe, said cutor shredded portion, if not 'sufficiently ne for the purpose it is required, being readily made so byl rubbing after its detachment from the plug. Any number of these strips, cut portions, or shreds b may be detached or torn from the plug, as required, and with the greatest facility, without disturbing or destroying the form or compactness of the remainder of the plug. l
rIhe same facility and advantages apply to the plug as prepared by making the cuts b longitudinally through it, as in Fig. 3, also when the cuts are both longitudinally and transversely arranged, as in Fig. 4.
Instead of an envelope being used to hold the cut plug together and in form, a mere band .will answer the purpose, or various kinds of case may be used, and the same be coustructed to admit of the ready detachment of one or more shredsor cut portions from the plug without removing the latter from its package or case.
I claim- As a new article of manufactured tobacco, plug-tobacco cut up or shredded without destroying-the original form of the plug, and inclosed by an envelope, band, or case, which preserves the original form of the plug and exposes to view the original grain thereof, sub- ADOLPH PEARL. Witnesses:
BENJAMIN W. HOFFMAN,
FRED. HAYNEs.
