Description

UNTTED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
WILLIAM MILLER, OF 'WAL'II-IAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
APPENDAGE TO SHOWER-BATHS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,349, dated October 6, 185'?.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM MILLER, of IValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shower-Baths; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying draw# ings, of which- Figggure 1, is a top view of a shower bath constructed with my improvement. Fig. 2, a front elevation of it exhibiting the door of the bath as open. Fig. 3, a longitudinal and vertical section of the bath. Fig. 4l, a horizontal section of it.
The nature of my improvement consists in combining with the bath, a brush. and mechanism for operating the same in order that a person while Within the standing chamber of the said bath and the said brush is in motion, may bring his back or other part of the body in contact with the brush so as to have such part cleansed or brushed.
Almost every person who has been in the habit of using a shower bath has experienced a difficulty in applying a brush to the upper part of his back.
It is the object of my invention to remedy this diiiiculty. And to accomplish this I arrange within the standing chamber, a, of a shower bat-h A, a brush, B, affixed to a vertical slide rod, C, by means of a set screw, the brush being movable on the slide rod and so as to be capable of being adjusted at such a position thereon as circumstances may require. This slide rod at its upper end should be hinged or jointed to the pitman,
D, extending from a bell crank E, of a horizontal shaft F, arranged in the upper part of the bath as shown in Figs. l, and 3. Such shaft is to be provided with a pulley, G, at one end of it, an endless band I-I being carried around the said pulley and another pulley, I, arranged within the bath chamber and on a shaft, K, carrying a crank L, as shown in the drawings. Instead of arranging the crank within the bath chamber so as to be easily accessible to a person standing in the showering chamber thereof, it may be disposed on the outside of the bath as shown at L', a pulley, I', band, II, and pulley G, being disposed within the bat-h and with respect to the rotary shaft in its upper part as shown in the drawings.
By laying hold of and revolving either crank, a reciprocating motion will be imparted to the brush and should a person, while standing in the bath and the brush is in motion bring his back or body in contact with the brush, he may brush or cleanse that part so exposed to the brush.
I claim- Combining with a shower bath, a brush and mechanism to impart to the said brush, movements, whereby a person while in the bath may have his back, or other part of his body brushed or cleansed substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature this 81st day of July, 1857.
WM. MILLER.
