Application filed lfl'ovember 25, 1329. Serial No. 499 667.
My invention relates to improvements in handl s fo'fr earthen crooks, jar and the like, wherein airing formedi'from "adjus tably connect'ed'ring segments'is arranged to be'adjust ,5 ably fitted around the 'topfoff' arrearand clamped .mtoengagement said crock,
said r'i ng' being provided wig handles disposed u pon" opposite sides 6f he brockwhere by the crock ma y be lifted].
1 Thep'riina'ry object -of my inventlon s to providean improved handle adapted to be mounted iipon earthen breaks and the like to facilitate the lifting thereof.
Another object is to provide an improved crock handle which may be readily adjusted M and secured upon crocks of various size.
A further object is to provide an improved crock handle which may be quickly and easily attached and detached from a crock to facilitate the transfer of the handle from one crock to another.
Another object is .to provide an improved clamping means whereby the handle may be easily and effectually clamped onto the top of a crock.
A still further object is to provide an im proved device of the character described which is simple and eflicient in operation, and of rugged and economical construction.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present application wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the drawings and specifications, and in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved crock handle, and indicating the manner in which the mounting ring may be adjusted to various sizes;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the handle as fitted upon a crock, and showing the clamping means;
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail taken upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 in the direction indicated;
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail taken upon the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 are usedto designate in general a pair of arcuate ring segments formed from he avy wire" or other suitable material shaped tdsubstaiitially semi-enema form, andeac'h provided with oi'ltvvardly turned endpdrtioffis 3 ands-. r hesgments 1 and-"2 arseaenpra vicledfwith outwardly disposed indentations 6 spaced substantia l lqually-from the-ends of the 2 segments; uitable handles 'ai'e mountedupon the segments '1aiid '-2, pref erablyby means -ofeyelets 8 engaging'the iridentationsfifas indicated inthe dra wii igs. To adjust the ring, the ends 3 and 4 of the segment 1 are sprung inwardly to disengage the apertures 14 of the bands 9, and the segment is moved to overlap the bands 9 sufficiently to adjust the diameter or" the ring to approximately fit the top of the ar, the clamping lever 18 being first swung to its releasing position as shown in full lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When the ring has been thus substantially fitted to the top of the crock, the ends 3 and 4 of the segment 1 are pressed into engagement with the nearest apertures 14. The lever 18 is then swung to its clamping position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, thereby moving the toggle link 19 into alinement with the lever 18 and forcing the end 4 of the segment 2 along the slot 16, thereby contracting the seg ment 2 into clamping engagement with the top of the crock. As the lever 18 is moved to its clamping position, it is sprung outwardy sufficiently to permit the notch 22 to engage the segment and thereby normally retain the lever in its clamping position.
The handle members 7 mounted upon the indentations 6 normally hang suspended at the sides of the crock 23 at diametrically opposed points, said members being pivotally movable to extend upwardly above the top of the crock, as shown in Fig. 2 whereby the handles may be conveniently gripped for lifting the crock. The indentations permit free movement of the eyelets 8 upon the segments'l and 2, said indentations operating to hold the eyelets 8 in spaced relation to the walls of the crock when the segments are .clamped around the top of the crock.
The specific details of construction and arrangement may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not wish to be restricted to the precise details illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of all modifications which may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A crock handle comprisingaringformed from a pair of ring segments each provided with outwardly turned ends; a pair of connecting bands apertured to adjustably e11- gage and connect adjacent ends of the se ments to vary the diameter of the ring to fit around the top of a crock, one of said bands having a longitudinally disposed slot engaging an end of a segment; a clamping lever pivotally mounted upon said band adjacent the slot; a toggle link pivotally connected to the lever and to the adjacent end of-the segment for moving said segment into clamping engagement with the top of the crock; and a pair of handle members mounted upon the segments and disposed upon opposite sides of the crock whereby the crock may be lifted.
2. A crock handle comprising aring formed from a pair of ring segments each provided with outwardly turned ends; a pair of connecting bands apertured to adj ustably engage and connect adjacent ends of the segments to vary the diameter of the ring to lit around the top of a crock, one of said bands having a longitudinally disposed slot engaging an end of a segment; a clamping lever pivotally mounted upon said band adjacent the slot; a toggle link pivotally connected to the lever and to the adjacent end of the segment for moving said segment into clamping engagement with the top of the crock; a pair of handle members mounted upon the segments and disposed upon opposite sides of the crock whereby the crock may be lifted;
and means formed upon the end of the lever and movable into engaging relation to the adjacent segment to normally hold said lever in clamping position. i
In witness whereof, I hereunto set my signature.
COMMODORE B. WOODMAN.
