Description

T. INAKI 'May 3, 1932.
NASAL IRRIGATOR Filed July 11, 1931,
INVENTOR AV ATTORNEYS.
yq lro L lllllllllllTllJ. .1
Patented May 3, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOYOJ'IRO INAKI, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HOOICHI SUMIDA, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA N ASAL IRRIGA'I'OR Application filed July 11,
My invention relates to a nasal irrigator or syringe whereby the nostrils and head can be thoroughly cleansed with water or other liquid desirable to use.
My invention has the following objects: The syringe described can be usedby a person on himself, or it can be used on another. The liquid to be used as a douche can be flushed alternately into one nostril opening and withw drawn by suction from the other, thus affording a thorough washing of the nasal cavities.
It can be taken apart and easily cleaned. It
is simple in construction and does not easily get out of working order. Other objects will be hereinafter disclosed.
In the drawings accompanying this specification, Fig. 1 is a view partly in section of the syringe. Figs. 2 and 4; are fractional sectional views of modified forms of the piston 2@ rod. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view along sectional line 33 in Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings, I have provided a tube 5 having a bottom 50 and a top closure 51. I preferably construct the tube of glass so that it can be easily cleaned and the contents readily seen, but other material may be substituted. The closure 51 can be screwed on or otherwise fitted to the top of tube 5 so the fit is liquid tight. Within tube go 5 is a double acting piston 6. The piston stem 7 is connected at one end to the piston and extends through closure 54 at a sliding fit.
A nut 4 holding packing 10 is adapted to make the fit liquid tight. VVit-hin piston stem 7 are two conduits, 71 and 72. Conduit 71 extends to the under side of piston 6, and has an outlet 7 3 thereunder. Conduit 72 terminates at the lower end with an outlet 74 on the upper side of piston 6.
It is here noted that while I have shown conduits 71 and 72 as two separate tubes, such conduits can be formed by constructing piston rod 7 hollow with a lateral partition 75 therein.
The top .ends of conduits 71 and 72 are spaced apart forming a Y, the branches of which are designated 8 and 10. These branches are provided with tips 9 and 11 adapted to fit within the nostrils and adapted to fit tightly on branches 8 and 10. These tips 1931. Serial No. 550,131.
are preferably made of soft rubber so they can form a liquid tight connection with the nostril without irritation. The spirit of my invention is not confined to the material preferred herein.
In applying this device, liquid 12 is placed within the tube, the preference being to fill tube 5 about one-half full, then inserting the piston unt l it is adjacent to the liquid in the tube, then fill tube 5 on the top of the piston and replace closure 51 on the tube.
Insert the tips 9 and 11 in either nostril opening, and then by working the tube 5 up and down on piston 6 the liquid within the tube is forced alternately into one nostril and simultaneously out of the other. When it is desired to let the l quid douche stay in the head for a brief period, it can be done by forcing the liquid through the nostril and then delay working the tube on the piston. When desired to inject liquid into the nostril or out of the nostril without s multaneously ejecting or injecting liquid into the other nostril. but one of the conduits and tips can be used.
Having described my invention I claim:
1. In a nasal syringe the combination of a tube having closures at both ends, a piston within the tube, a piston stem having two conduits laterally within said stem, one having an opening under the piston and the other having an opening above the piston, each of said conduits terminating at the ends out side the tube with a tip adapted to fit the nostril.
2. In a nasal syringe the combination of a tube having closures at either end, a double acting piston adapted to fit within the tube, conduits connecting with the chambers within the tube on either side of the piston, each of said condu ts terminating at the ends outside the tube with tips adapted to fit within the nostrils.
TOYOJIRO INAKI.
