Description

May 17, 1932. 'w. c. ULINE FOLDING TABLE Filed June 27, 1929 I N V EN TOR. ZUaZzer e ZZ/z'rze A TTORNEY.
Patented May 17, 1932 WALTER o. ULINE, or NAPPANEE, INDIANA FOLDING TABLE Application filed June 27,-
The invention relates to folding tables, and more particularly to folding card tables and the like, and has for its object to provide a device of this character in which table frame 5 corner brackets are adapted to carry the table legs and the leg braces, whereby the corner brackets may be secured to the table frame by means of screws secured to the frame rails at the inner sides thereof, so that-no J securing means are exposed at the outer sides of the table frame.
A further object is to provide a device of this character in which a table leg, leg braces, and a corner bracket are adapted to be as sembled in a unit and secured to the table frame as a unit, whereby the assembly of the table is facilitated and a material saving of time and labor in assembly in comparison with current practice is obtained.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in 5 the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings:
0 Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a corner of a table frame constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the unit assembly of the corner bracket, table leg, and leg braces, with the table leg in extended. position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a corner of the table frame.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates one corner of a table frame of conventional construction, and preferably provided with a groove 2 extending centrally thereof around its inner faces. Adapted to bemounted in the groove 2 at each corner of 4;.) such table frame is a corner bracket 3, which may be of any suitable shape and adapted to reinforce the table frame at the corners thereof, said corner bracket being provided with a plurality of holes 7 in the portions thereof abutting the table frame through which the 1929 Serial Ho; 374,125.-
screws 7 areadapted to extend to secure the" corner brackets to the table frame. Secured to one arm of the corner bracket 3 in spaced relation to the other arm of the corner bracket by riveting or other suitable means is angle bracket 4, and between the free arm of the angle bracket and the corner bracket is pivo-t'ally mounted a table leg 5, said angle bracket 4 preferably being of a substantial width to support the table leg in correct posi; tion relative to the tableframe. A folding table leg brace 6- of suitable construction supports the table leg when in extended'position, being secured to the table leg at one end and to the corner bracket 3 at the other end.-
Since the angle bracket 41, the table leg 5, and the folding leg brace 6 at each corner of the table frame are each carried by a corner bracket 3, they form an easily assembled unit by virtue of the ease with which they may be handled independent of the table frame, and
the manufacture ofa table of such construction it is intended, in accordance with my invention, that said parts be assembled in a unitary construction preliminary to their application to the table frame. After such unit assembly has been completed the corner brackets thereof are fitted into thegrooves 2 and are secured to the table frame by screws 7, the provision of the grooves 2 for the corner bracket insuring a substantial weight supporting; construction It will be seen that with. this construction, employing screws inserted from the inner side to secure the corner brackets'to the tableframe, no securing means extend through to or are exposed on the outer faces of the table frame, the appearance of said table frame consequently being greatly enhanced as compared with the present practice of exposing securing means for the brackets, such as rivets, on the outer sides of the table frame.
It will thus be seen that a table construction is provided, the corner brackets, and leg. brackets of which are adapted for unitary assembly preliminary to application thereof to the frame, whereby the time, labor, and cost of manufacture are materially reduced by diminishing the handling operations otherwise necessary when said parts are each separately aplied to the table frame.
The invention having been set forth, What is claimed as new and useful is:
1. The combination with a table frame, of
L a unitary assembly comprising a corner bracket, an angle bracket carried by one arm of said corner bracket in spaced relation to the other arm thereof, a table leg pivotally mounted between said corner bracket and an gle bracket, and a foldable brace member pivotally mounted at its ends respectively to said leg and corner bracket, and means for securing said assembly to said table frame.
2. The combination with a table frame having a groove formed in its inner faces at the corners thereof, of a unitary assembly comprising a corner bracket, an angle bracket carried by one arm of said corner bracket in spaced relation to the other arm thereof, a table leg pivotally mounted between said corner bracket and angle bracket, and a foldable brace member pivotally mounted at its ends respectively to said leg and corner bracket, and means for securing said corner bracket in said groove, said means forming the sole connection between said unitary assembly and table frame.
3. The combination with a table frame, of a corner bracket having a pair of angularly disposed arms, a support carried by one arm of said bracket and extending in spaced parallel relation to the other bracket arm, a table leg secured between the parallel support and bracket arm, and a leg brace extending between said leg and one of said bracket arms, said bracket, support, leg and brace forming a preassembled unit, and screws securing the arms of said bracket to said table frame in spaced relation to said leg to operatively secure said unit to said table frame.
4:. The combination with a table frame having a groove formed in the inner face thereof, of a corner bracket having angularly extending arms adapted to be disposed in said groove, an angle bracket having one portion thereof secured to one arm of said corner bracket and the other portion thereof extending in spaced parallel relation to the other bracket arm, a table leg pivotally mounted at one end thereof between said corner bracket and angle bracket, and a folding leg brace pivotally secured at its ends tosaid leg and one of said corner bracket arms, said corner bracket, angle bracket, leg and brace forming a preassembled unit, and screws securing the arms of said corner bracket to said frame in spaced relation to said leg to form the sole connection between said unitary assembly and table frame. 7
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
' lVALTER C. ULINE.
