Description

June 14, 1932. D. BARNES CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER Filed March 31, 1930 Patented June 14, 1932 GEORGE D. BARNES, OI PENN YAN, You
CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHEB Application filed larch a1, 1980. Serial Io. 440,442.
This invention appertains to tobacco users a pliances and more particularly to a novel cigarette holder.
' One of the primary objects of my invention L1; is to provide a cigarette holder having means associated directly therewith for extinguishing a cigarette, said means including a sleeve slidably associated with the holder and mov able over the free end of the holder into more 19 or less intimate contact with the cigarette so as to snuif the burning end thereof.
I am aware of the fact that there has heretobefore been proposed or provided a sliding sleeve on a cigarette holder, but solely for the purpose of protecting the cigarette and preventing the flying of ashes and sparks incident to driving or the smoking of a cigarette on a windy day. These sleeves are all spaced from the cigarette and allow the circulation of air around the cigarette for supporting the burning of the cigarette in contra-dis'tinction to my invention in which the sleeve is snugly carried by the body portion of the cigarette holder and is adapted to slide over the cigarette in close contact therewith for snufling the burning end.
Another salient object of my invention is to provide a cigarette holder and snuifing sleeve which can be made of paper so as to tating the snuifing and the compression ofthe butt of the cigarette into the holder with a sliding snufling sleeve mounted on the holder havin a' resilient flanged end for engaging the anged end of the holder for limiting the outward sliding movement of the sleeve onthe holder and for permitting the snug engagement of the sleeve with the cigarette.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a cigarette holder of the above character, which will be durable and eflicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manumaterially reduce the cost thereof and to per-' facture, and one which can be placed upon the market at an extremely low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will 5:. be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cigarette holder showing the same in use with the snufling sleeve in retracted position.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through my improved cigarette holder showing the samein its extended operative snufling position.
Figure 3 is a rear end elevation of the improved holder, and
Figure 4 is a transverse section through the same taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates my improved cigarette holder, which comprises an elongated cylindrical holder barrel portion 5 which is pref- 2'." erably made from paper either rolled or compressed into shape. This barrel 5 is of a uniform diameter throughout its length, but the rear end thereof is slightly compressed as at 6, while the forward end thereof is so flanged or slightly flared outwardly as at 7.
It is to be noted that while the rear end of the barrel 5 is compressed as at 6, the same is still left in its cylindrical form so that the same can be grasped by the lips of the user similar to the ordinary cigarette, the barrel being made of paper, is. of extremely lightweight.
Slidably mounted on the barrel 5 in snug engagement therewith is the snufling sleeve 8. This snufling sleeve is likewise made of paper and can either be rolled into the desired shape or compressed into shape. The rear end of the snufiing sleeve is flanged inwardly as at 9 and this flange is more or less of a resilient character due to the material from which the sleeve is made and is adapted to engage the flange 7 for limiting the outward sliding movement of the sleeve 8 on the barrel 5, when the sleeve is moved to its ex- 7 tended position.
In use of my improved holder, the sleeve 8 is ulled rearward on the barrel as shown 5 in i re 1 after which the cigarette, indicated y the reference character 0, is sli htly com ressed and forced into the forwar end of t e barrel. The cigarette C can now be smoked in the usual way and when it is de- 10 sired to extinguish the cigarette it is merely necessary to slide the snuifing sleeve 8 outward over the burning end of the cigarette which will immediatelylput the cigarette out.
In view of the fact t at the complete holder is made from paper the same can be supplied to the trade very cheaply and it is proposed to give a holder with each package of cigarettes and thus each holder will only be used say twenty times. Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of the invention, but
What I claim as new is: As-a new article of manufacture, a ciga- 95 rette extinguisher and snufier, comprising an elongated cigarette holding barrel having'one end flanged for the reception of a cigarette and its opposite end contracted, an elongated tapered sleeve slidable on the barrel and hav- 8 ing its rear end flanged and adapted to contact with the flange on the cigarette holding barrel for limiting the outward movement of the sleeve with respect to the cigarette holding barrel, said sleeve having an inner bore of the same size as a conventional cigarette, and adapted to slidably contact with the outer face of a cigarette for extinguishing the same as the sleeve is moved in contacting longitudinal movement over the outer 40 face of the cigarette carried by the cigarette holding barrel, the flanged end of the sleeve being of resilient character to permit the flexing thereof when the sleeve is slid on the barrel to permit complete contacting relation between the cigarette carried by the cigarette holding barrel and the inner face of the bore of the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
5 GEORGE D. BARNES.
