P. HOFF PRICE TICKET HOLDER Filed Aug. 5, 19:51
Patented June 21, 1932 PATENT OFFICE PHILLIP HOPP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y
PRICE TlICKET' HOLDER Applicationl'ed August 5, 1931'.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in display devices, and more particularly it pertains'to a price ticket holder especially adapted foruse in connection with steel shelving.
Steel shelving presents problems in the attachment of price ticket holders not present in wooden shelving because of the fact that such shelving is generally constructed of rel-- atively thin sheet metal and to lend strength and nish thereto, the shelves arey generally formedv with a flange which extends around one or more edges of the shelves, and which depends or extends. downwardly therefrom. Such a construction presents a shelf in which the forward edge is of a width which` is greater than the thickness ofthe material from which the shelfV is formed as distinguished from wooden shelving in which the width of the forward edge of the shelf is substantially equal to the thickness of the material from which theV shelf is made;
Itis the primary object ofthe present invention to provide a price? ticket holder which is especially adapted for: use in con;- nection with shelvesv formed of sheet metal, and particularly such shelves asI areV formed with a'flange depending from the forward edge thereof.
It is a further object of' the invention, so to construct a price ticket holdery that it may be readily attached to, and removed from sheet metal shelving ofthe aforementioned character, and which will'. be securely retained in operative position. upon thek shelf.
A still further object ofthe invention resides in a novel construction whereby the holder is retained in. position upon a shelf without the use of separate fastening; elements. K
lnsomeforms of metal shelving, the flange which depends-:from the forward edge ofthe shelves is bent rearwardly" andi upwardly with the upwardly bent portion spaced from the-body of the flange,y andiit'isan object of this invention to provide arprice ticketholder whichy may be employed: in connection with this type. of shelving aswell a'siwitlrthetypes aforementioned. i
With tleiaforementioned,d andK other b- Serial No. 555,240.
jects in view, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing, wherein;
Figure l,v is a perspective view of a complete device constructed inv accordance with thev present invention,
Figure 2, is a vertical sectional view taken through a metal shelf showing the: manner of attachment' of a yprice ticket holderconstructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 3, is a vertical. sectional viewV illustrain'g a modifiedy form of the invention, an 4 Figure 4, is a perspectivev view of the shelf engaging member of that form of the invention illustrated in Figure 3.
Referring more specifically tothe drawing, it will benoted that the devicecomprises a resilient attaching member 5 .and a'ticket carrying Apanel or similar member- 6.
The resilient attaching member 5l is-.p'referably formedy from spring' metal which is bent upon itself as at 7 to 'substantially'U shapedcross sectional form and providing twospacedwalls 8 and 9.
Thewall- 8 is formed along itsuppe'r'edge with a right angular extension l0 Vwhich `forms a foot for engagement withitheunder face of a shelf or the like 1l. The'wall 9 i's formed along its upper edge with aninwardly disposed bead l2which preferabiyextends throughout the length of the upper edge of thev wall'. As best illustrated in Figures 2 and, 3, the wall 9 iss slightly wider thanV the wall 8 and this contruction throws the bead 12 to a position slightly above the plane of the foot or right angular extension- 10 and this distance. is substantially equal to the thickness of the metal from which the shelf 1l is formed;
Byv this 'construction it willf be apparent that when: the device'. is engaged withl the end of a shelf of thetype' illustrated iin'- Fig,- `ure=2, the depending flange' 13 ofi the shelf will be received. between' the walls 8l and 9 of thesere'silient clips: In this position,.the foot lO engages the under surface of the shelf ll and the' bead l2rvengages the upper face of thezshelf. 11 at" the forward edge? thereof, with' the depending fiange' portion 13 of the 100 shelf positioned between the walls 8 and 9 of the resilient clips.
Engagement of the bead 12 with the upper edge of the shelf 11, places the resilient member under tension and such tension serves to retain the bead 12 in engagement with the shelf and also the foot in engagement with the under surface of the shelfwith sufficient holding action to retain the device in place thereon.
The ticket carrying member 6 may be of any desired form and in the present instance it consists of a panel like member provided with ticket retaining flanges 15 upon its, op-
posite side andlugs 16 upon its end which Vserve/to position the tickets. Cut out portions 17 are provided to facilitate placing and removing the tickets therefrom. The
ticket carrying element 6 may be attached to the resilient clip 5 by integral extensions 18 .which are bent around the ends of the wall 9 of the resilient member 5.
In Figures 3 and 4, there is illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention'and the device shown in these figures is especially adapted for use in connection with shelves in which the depending flange 13 is bent rearwardly and upwardly as indicated at 20 in Figure 3. In this form of the device, the resilient clip 5 is formed along its line of fold with an enlarged portion which is of suficient dimension to receive the portion 2O of the shelf without unduly springing the resilient clip and permits of the resilient action of said clip firmly gripping a shelf of the'second mentioned type.
Thus it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved ticket holding device for use with metal shelving which is so constructedand arranged as to be securely retained upon a metal shelving.
While the invention has been herein illustratedin a preferred form, it is to be understood that it is not to be limited to the specific constructionherein shown and that it may be practiced in other forms without departing from the spirit thereof.
' Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s:
