' "Thi sinvention relates to seat covers and it consists of the novel construction, combination, arrangement and relationship of parts herein shown, described and claimed.

Anobject of the invention is to provide an improved seat cover comprising a seat cover ingmembe rhaving parts thereof for coverlng the exposed portions of the seat proper,

so as to protect both the seat proper and the V clothes of the user. This seat covering member is of novel construction so that it will fit nicely upon and about the seat proper so that the covering will not slip or fold when in use, nor when the user moves to and from position thereon. I o Another object of the invention is to pro;- vide an improved seat cover comprising a back member designedand adapted to be applied to the front side'of the seat back and to cooperate with'the covering member forthe seat proper so as toperform a complete seat and clothes protector for applicationtoaseat having a back rest. This back covering memher is of novelconstruction and form and cooperates with fastening means whereby it is held permanently in connection with the back of the j seat and is also provided with means for engagement by the bottom of the seat, that is to say, bythe seat proper, so as to be; retained in'proper position thereon and prevented from slipping or folding when in use or when the user is moving to or from the seat. o 1

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved cover for the back rest of the ,seat of novel shape and'form so as to engage therewith and with the seat proper in a; novel and more efficient manner.

Fig. 6 is a view showing the under side of the covering member for the cushion or seat e The back member of my improved seat cover may include both a facing and a lining or backing made of proper shape and size and secured together in cooperative relation ship so that they may be readily and'satis factorily applied to the seat back for which the cover is designed and intended. Preferably, though not essentially, the facing is a textile and the liningor backing may also be made of a textile fabricorof other appropriate material. F or the facing I have. found that a textile having woof andwarp elements an elongation or extension 2 projecting latorally or enawise beyond the ends 3 near the upper side of the body'land beyond the ends t at the lower side of thebody 1. Thus, the distance between the ends 3 of the body 1' is .approximately the width of the seat back for which the covering is intended so thatthe extended ends 2 will fold or extend rearwardly .around and against the front rounded corners at the lateral ends or sides of the seat back, as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 1 in which the device is shown on theseat of an automobile.- Thus, the elongations 2 constitute means for extending rearwardly at the vertical sides or ends of the seat back so that they will not become caught by the user movingsidewise into the seat. This will be appreciated as a' genuine advantage when the cover is'applled to the seat of an automobile and partlcu'la'rly' facing comto the front seat of an automobile since the doors of the automobile are usually at the ends of the front seat, requiring the pas- 'sengers to enter and leave the car at the ends of the seat. It is well known that when entering or leaving the car the passengers often move or slide-laterally along the seats and under such Circumstances the present inven tion comprising the novel shape and form of the back members is. a genuine advantage. For, by tucking or extending the elongations 2 rearwardly about and against the lateral sides or ends of the seat back the passenger entering the car will not roll up the lateral ends of the back covering member.

The lower marginal portion 5 of the backcovering member; that is to say, that portion of the back covering member between the ends 4 is of sufficient width or length from the body 1 to extend downwardly between the seat cushion or seat proper and the seat back, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the lower marginal portion of the back covering member is thereby clamped, gripped or engaged between members of the seat and the lower portion of the back covering member is firmly secured in position.

The ends 3 at the upper portion of the body 1 are about even with the lateral ends of the seat back to'which the device is applied. Be-

' yond theends 3 the facing is shaped to provideconverging edges 6 curving in ogee outline to intersection with the edge 7; Thus, the ends 6 and the edge 7 define a foldable flap 8 arranged to fold and extend over the top of the seat back and downwardly against the upper rear portion of the seat back. This flap 8 is secured to the seat back by fasteners 9 which may also be used as fasteners to secure the rack 10 to the rear side of. the seat back. Thus, the upper edge of the covering member of the back is rigidly attached tothe seat back and the lower edge is held in proper position by cooperation of the seat back and the seat cushion.

This back covering member may be, and preferably is provided with a backing or lining 11 of the same shape as the facing and attached thereto along its marginal edges by stitches 12 whereby the facing and theliningor backing are held in proper cooperative relationship. The marginal edges of both parts are infolded between the parts and the stitches 12 pass through said infolds.

: This backing or lining strengthens the back covering member and the fasteners 9 pass through both plies of material comprising the extension 8 of the body 1 of the facing and a similarly shaped part of the lining or back ing. .These fasteners 9, as shown, are rela tively close to the edge 7 and tothe ogee ends 6. Additional fasteners maybe used, if desired.

, to the seat back in the'manner shown and described, is held stretched between the fasteners 9 and the seat cushion. Said back covering member is thus held closely against the curved front of the back member of the seat and the extensions 2 are bent rearwardly against and along the curved corners at the ends of the seat. The marginal portions of the extensions 2, being well beyond the stretched body of the covering member, are not stretched to the extent that the body 'ofthe covering member is stretched and are not subjected to the same stresses as the body portion of the covering member. Thus, since the body portion of the covering member is stretched in arc'uate form conforming to the front of the back member of the seat, and since the extensions 2 are folded along curved. lines, these extensions 2 extend rearwardly against the ends of the back member of the seat. Said extensions retain their position against the ends of the back member of the seat and will not extend laterally" without stretching the edges of said extensions.

The seat covering member, that is to say,

the covering member for the seat cushion or seat proper, comprises a body 14 of a shape '3 and size properly to coverthe seat cushion or seat proper for which the device is intended, and having an extended part 15 constituting a drop to extend downwardly at the front of the seat cushion; and also having at its opposite edge an extension 16 designed and adapted to extend downwardly atthe rear of the seat cushion. Thus, the extension 16 tucks behind the seat cushion between the lower end of the back and the rear edge of the seat cushion and contacts with the extension 5 of the backing so that the rear edge of the'seat covering memberand the lower edge of the back covering member are engaged and held in proper relationship with each other. All or any of the assembled parts of the seat covering member maybe made of textile fabric. Particularly I have found. that the textile fabric havinglwoof and warp elements about the size of the straws of straw matting is highly satisfactory as is also true of the back covering member but I do not;

At or near the corners formed by the edges J of the extension 16 of the body. and the rear edges of'the flaps 18' the body is folded and sewed to form darts 22, one of said darts extending forwardly from the rear edge of each flap 18 and the other darts being in the body 14 and extensions 16 respectively. This constructionobtains a nice fit atthe rear corners of the usual seat cushions of automobiles for which this invention is speciallytheugh not exclusively designed and adapted.

The marginal edges of the extensions 15 and 16 and the flaps 18 are folded under and against the body portions of said parts to provide underfolds 23 (Fig. 6) secured in such relationship by a row of stitches 24 running entirely around the device near its marginal edge as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6.

The forward extension 15, therear extension 16 and the end flaps 18 may have attached thereto the ends of straps 25 of suflicient length to extend well under the seat cushion so as to be clamped by the seat cushion and thereby securely hold the seat covering member inposition. Thus the seat covering member Will not slip norcan it fold or roll as the passenger moves or slides laterally along the seat to enter or to leave the car.

From the foregoing it is clear enough that my invention comprises a seat covering member anda back covering member of novel and highly satisfactory construction and arrangement; that said parts are flexible and readily adjust and adaptthemselves to fit properly upon the seat elements; that they are arranged and applied to the seat elements so as to obtain holding engagement therewith and thereby prevent said parts from 'working loose or from rolling up when the passengers leave or enter the car; that said seat covering member and said back covering member cooperate to provide all the cover that is need- 7 ed for the-seat and back and that they coop- 'erate with each other to hold their positions in the manner clearly shown and described. The advantages of this device must be clear from the preceding description and the annexed drawings and it is obvious to those skilled in the art that the device may be varied within equivalent limits without departing from the nature and principle of the invention. By making the device in detached parts, that is to say, by making the back covering member and the seat covering each end of said body curved rearwardly around the adjacent curved corner and against the adjacent end of said seat back and having its marginal portion unattached to said seat back and subject to'less stretching than said body.

A cover for a seat back that has an upwardly and rearwardly curved front and curved corners at its ends comprising a body including a textile facing composed of relatively large warp and woof elements and having its lower and upper marginal portions approximately equal in width to the width of the lower and upper portions respectively of the seat back, and a lateral extension at each end of said body; a textile lining having an area equal to the area of said facing and said extensions and attached to said facing and said extensions along their marginal edges, said body being stretched vertically, against said curved front r and said extensions being curved rearwardly around the adjacent curved corners and against the adjacent ends'of the seat back and having their marginal portions unattached to said seat back and free from the stretching to which said body is subject HARRY e.
