IMPROVEMENTYIN HARNESS-TRIMMINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,834, dated February 27, 1877 application filed December 2, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. EBERHARD, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gag and Rein Runner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there on.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my improved gag and rein runner applied to a bridle. Fig. 2 shows the method of inserting the flat part of a check-rein into the said runner. Fig. 3 is a front view of the improved gag and rein runner.

The object of this invention is to dispense with the large loops commonly used in gag and rein runners. This object is accomplished by substituting therefor small open hooks, which allow the insertion edgewise of the flat part of the check rein or similar strap of leather, said hooks being provided at their upper ends with buckles, forming a part thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, A designates the crown-piece of an ordinary bridle;

B, the brow-band, and 0 one of the cheekstraps, attached at its lower end to bit-ring D. The driving-rein E is also attached to said bit-ring, in the usual manner, as is also the check or gag rein F.

My improved gag and rein runner consists of a hook, G, circularly curved inward at g,

its shank being provided with a buckle, H, all made in one piece, as shown in the accompanying drawings. The letter I is a tongue, attached to the buckle in the ordinary way. Fig. 2 of the drawings shows the method of inserting the flat part f of the check-rein F in the runner. It will be noticed that the flat part of the rein or strap is passed in edgewise between the hook-pointy and shank, through the opening G when the cylindrical partfof said check-rein is drawn through said hook in the usual manner.

This construction of the runner enables me to dispense with the curnbrous and inconvenient loops and rings now in use, substituting therefor a neat, light, and ornamental article.

Theform of the said runner may vary somewhat. Thus its shank may be twisted slightly to one side, to allow the more easy insertion of the strap or rein; or it may be curved outward and backward for the same purpose. The shape of the hook-point 9 may be also somewhat varied.

What I claim as my invention is- An improved gag and rein runner, consisting of a buckle and an open book or loop, adapted to receive the rein or strap edgewise, made from a single piece of metal, substantially as shown and described.
