Description

R. HOFFMAN Nov. 15, 1932.
HANGER Filed July 27', 1951 INVENTOR Patented Nov. 15, 1932 UNITED STATES PArENr oFFicr;
nosn HOFFMAN, or naarroan, CONNECTICUT, assroivon T PAULINE HOFFMAN, or
naa'rroan, oomvno'rrcu'r HANGER Application filed July 27, 1931. Serial No. 553,417.
This invention relates to garment hangers.
Garments on sale are usually placed on hangers, and in order to prevent the garment from becoming soiled, a protective covering is placed over the same. In order to remove the protective covering and thus expose the garment to the view of a prospective purchaser, I have invented the hanger herein illustrated and described.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to theprecise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therefrom as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my improved garment hanger showing a garment hung thereon and a protective covering over the garment and supported on the hanger, the garment covering being partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of the garment hanger shown in Fig. 1, this view however showing parts of the hanger in raised position, which position these parts assume when the protective covering is raised to expose the garment to view; and- Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the mechanism of my improved hanger.
Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral 5 indicates a curved member adapted to support a garment 6. A pair of arms 8 are adapted to support a protective covering 9 placed over the garment to prevent the latter from be coming soiled. The arms 8 are pivotally connected between their ends to a U-shaped bracket 10, as indicated by the numeral 11 the arms being pivoted to the upper ends of the uprights a of the mentioned bracket. The bracket is secured by means of clamps 12 to the central portion of the upper surface of the garment support 5.
A link 15 is connectedby means of pin and slot connections '16 to the inner ends of the arms 8, the mentioned arms sloping downwardly from their inner ends when the protective covering 9 is hung thereon, as shown in Fig. 1. A hook 18, having a shank 18a, is secured to the garment supporting member 5, passing transversely through the center thereof andextending above the upper sur face of the same. The mentioned hook passes through said link 15, and through a grommet 9a in the protective covering 9, the link being slidable on the shank 18a of the hook. A chain 20 is secured to the link 15 and depends therefrom and is provided at its lower end with a ring 21 which, when pulled d0wnwardly, is effective to raise the arms 8, and therefore the protective covering carried thereby, so that the garment is exposed to the view of a prospective purchaser, the mentioned arms, when raised, assuming the positions shown in Fig. 2.
o I have thus described a hanger comprising means whereon a garment may be hung, and means whereon a protective covering for the garment may be hung in protective relation to the garment, the mentioned means, being relatively movable towards, and away from, each other, and means for moving the first two mentioned means relatively away from each other.
What is claimed as new is:
A hanger for the purpose indicated comprising a garment supporting member, means for suspending the same from a support, arms pivotally mounted on said memher with their pivotal mountings disposed adjacent said suspending means, a protective covering carried by said arms and enclosing said garment supporting member in one position of the arms, a link member slidably mounted on said suspending means and having slot and pin connections with the adjacent ends of said arms, and a pull chain connected with said link member for applying a downward pull on the same to elevate the remote ends of the arms and thereby elevate the protective covering above said garment supporting members.
In testimony whereof I hereby aflix my signature.
ROSE HOFFMAN.
