Description

Nov. 29, 1932. R. H. TALLEY ET AL EXTENSION JOINT FOR STOVE PIPES Filed April 17. 1951 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 29, 1932 UNITED s'la'lrzs` ROBERT H. TALLEY AN'D CHARLES Ii. '.PRI.1CHE'JI"J.", OF lBURNSIDE, MISSISSIPPI EXTENSION JOIN'JI FOR STOVE PIPES Application led April 17,
This invention relates to pipe joints and has for an object the provision of a pipe section which may be adjusted with respect to an adjacent pipe section and securely held in adjusted position, so as to provide in connection with other pipe sections, a pipe of a desired length without cutting, the invention being especially applicable to stove pipes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pipe section of the above charac-ter which includes spaced bendable pipe engaging tongues cut or struck from said section and having means to close the slits around the tongues which will also reinforce the section.
With the above and other objects in view, i the invention further includes the following Y novel features and details of constructionto be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 isk an elevationvof a pipe joint constructed in accordance with the inven-V tion.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figure 3 is an end view. n Figure 4; is a similar view looking at the '50 opposite end of the joint from that shown in Figure 3. Y
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a pipe section which may form aV part of a stove pipe and which is enlarged at one end as shown at 11 to receive the crimped end of an adjacent pipe section (not shown). The opposite end of the pipe section 10 is adapted to be slidingly received within an adjacent pipe section 12 so that r the sections 10 and 12 may be relatively ada justed to provide a pipe of a given length without cutting any of the sections.
In order to hold the sections 10 and 12 against relative sliding movement in one direction, v
a plurality of tongues 13. These tongues the section 10 has cut therefrom` 1931. serial No. 530,932.
are'longitudinally aligned and spaced and are arranged upon diametrically opposite sides of the pipe section; These tongues are bent in an outward inclined direction and thence in an upward straight direction, as 5 fully illustrated at 14, consequently, when the adjacent end of the inner pipe section isinserted within the outer pipe section 12 the inner end of the section 12 will iit beneathy the straight portion ofthe tongue 13 and in contact with? the inclined portion thereof. By this arrangement, it will be seen that the particular manner of bending the tongues 13 forms an abutment for the inner end of the section 12.
In order to preventthe outward passage` of smoke and the inward passage of air out of and into the pipe, the section 10 is provided with an elongated rstrip 15 upon diainetrically opposite sides of and within the pipe section 10. This strip closes the slits 16,V around the tongues 13 and in addition, acts to reinforce the pipe section which might be weakened in forming the tongues. The strips 15, as better shown in Figures 5 3 and 4 of the drawing, are ofa contour to i conform withthe contour of the pipe section 10 and are secured within the inner pipe section 10 with one end of the strips ush with the adjacent end lof the latter-mentioned section by means of rivets 17 or other suitable means.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall'within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is :-k i
In a pipe joint, arpair of telescopically engaged stovepipe sections, longitudinally spaced and aligned bendable tongues struck from the inner pipe section in an outwardly inclined direction and thence in an upwardly straight direction upon diametrically opposite sides of the said inner pipe section disposed beneath the straight upper portion of the tongue and abutting with the inclined portion thereof, and diametrically disposed longitudinally arranged elongated strips of a contour conforming with the inner contour of the inner pipe section and contacting with the latter and riveted thereto at a point flush With the adjacent end thereof and over the slits around the tongues and reinforcing the inner end of the inner pipe section.
In testimony whereof We aix our signatures.
ROBERT H. TALLEY. CHARLES PRITCHETT.
