fTINvALIn BED 1 Application flied as 2's, 1930. Serial no. 471,273.
This invention relates generally to invalid beds of the type having mechanically movable portions to accommodatethe necessities of an invalid, and particularly to a'bed of this type having sections of the bed removable when it is desired to use a bed pan or the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a bed of this character which has a'plurality of mechanically movable sections capable of being moved into and out of position'for accommodating a bedpan or the like without disturbing an invalid reclining thereon.
' It is'also an object of this invention to provide a device of thischaracter which is simple and efiicient in operation, and which is inexpensive to manufacture.
It is also an object of this invention to'provide a structure of the character-described which embodies new and novel features and a novel arrangement whereby a superiorresult is achieved in an invalid bed of the type described.
These and further objects, the nature of the invention and its composition and arrangement and combinationof'parts will be readily underst'oodby reading the following description of the drawings-, -in which:
' Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved invalid bed. 7
Figure'2 is a top view of Figure 1. V t Figure 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken approximately on the line'3-3 of Figure 1. 5
Figure 4 is a bottom view of oneof the slides.
Figure 5 is a detailed cross section cut transversely throu h the bed approximately on the line 55 of igure 2. e 5
i Figure 6 is a detail of one of the'operating levers showing the catch member thereon.-
Figure 7 is a perspective view of one of the notched bars; adapted for engagement by the lever shown in Figure 6. Y
It is to be understood that I do not desire to limit the application of this invention-to the particular embodiment set forth herein to illustrate the principles thereof, and any change or changes may be made in material V and structure consistent with thespirit and Referring in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that I'provide' a frame generally designatedby the numeral F to be supported centrally of the bed'G, said frame consisting 7 of a plurality of bars depending from the main frame of the bed and having cross mem' bers to form'a box-like structure. The outward side 5 of the frame F, is, as shown in Fig. 1, constructed as a continuation of'the. side of the main frame of the bed. 1
' At the inward side of said frame F is jour nalled a shaft 7 on which is pivoted a'series of levers 8. The levers 8 each have a'straight portion9, an angularly offset portion l0,ian other straight portion 11 to which is attached a pair of diverging legs 12'on the ends "of which are bearing sleeves 13 carrying adj usting screws for adjusting the bearing of said sleeves on said shaft 7 Formed on the end portion 9 of each-lever 8 is a lateralproje'c 7 tion laadapted to engage in notches 16a and 16b inba'rs 16 supported by uprigh't i'nembers of the frame F which are generally des ignatedha, which Inembers'in .this inan'ner retain the levers 8 in adjusted positionsas l shownin Figure 5 in'full and in dotted lines. Rising from the central portion of'each lever 8 is'a' pivotally connected stub-shaft 15 which has a U-shaped opening in one end thereof for straddling said lever '8 on the portion 11' thereof. 1 A roller 15a is mounted in said opening for riding upon the upper edge ofthe lever. The upper ends of said stub shafts 15 have T-crossheads 17 the arms of which'are pivotally received in pairs of'eyes 18 attached to the under side of each of the slides 19. Crossbars20 support said eyes 18 on the slides. 5 a
The slides 19 are generally rectangular in form and transversely elongated. As shown in, the drawings, three of the slides 19, are utilized in the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein. -They are movably supported relative to anopening in the platform of the bed which extends'from oneside-of the platform to a point near the other side thereof. In the raised opening'filling' position of the slides they fill the opening and are level with the surface ofthebed-fplab form. The spaces betweenfthe slides themwith the strip 21 are attached to and overhang the transverse sides of the opening in the platform. Similar transverse strips 22a also formedintegral with the strip 21 and located between the strips 22 are stretched across the opening andattached to blocks on the upper ends of the vertical members 5a by turning down and tacking or similarly securing end portions thereof as seen in Fignre 1. The strips 22a are so placed that they will cover the spaces between the slides in their raised positions.
Associated with each slide 19 and connected between its stub shaft 17 and the outer end of the slide is an angularly arranged brace 23. The upper end of the brace 23 is fixedly attached to the undersurface of the slide immediately adjacent the outer end thereof and the lower end of the brace 23 is pivotally connected to an intermediate portionof the stub shaft 15. By this arrangement the slide is prevented from tilting while in the raised position andduring the raising and lowering thereof.v Further means for steadying the slide in its different positions and while being moved is provided in the form of a U-shaped'guide member 24 which slidably. engages a. contiguous vertical member at the far side of the frame F.
The fully raised position of the slides 19 is maintained by engaging the levers 8 in the upper notches 16a of the vertical bars 16, while a lowered position of the slides may be maintained by engaging the levers 8 in the lower notches 16b of the vertical bars 16.- Of course, any of the slides may be moved and positioned irrespective of the positions of the other slides.
Each of the slides 19 comprises a generally rectangular frame seen in Figure l to which are attached the U-shaped guide member 24, and the cross members 20 which carry the bearing eyes 18 in which the cross arm of the associated stub shaft 15 is journaled. As seen in Figure 5 the slide frame has a vertical flange 18a and an associated block formation 20a. The edges ofthe upholstered member 19a of the slide rest on the block formation 20a and upon a spring suspension structure 19?; strung between the vertical flanges 181;.
When the. slides are in lowered position they provide ample room below the invalid for insertion of a bedpan or the like, and it is obvious that'one or two or three or all of the slides may be lowered or raised simultaneously or selectively, one at a time, according to the needs and position of the invalid on the bed and the nature of the operations to be performed. It will be seen that through the arrangement of the invention it is unnecessary to move a bedridden invalid for certain operations and 'that the placement of the slides renders attendance upon the invalid a simple and easy matter, and making possible the rendering of attention to patients whom otherwise it would be impossible to properly attend owing to the difficulty and danger involved in moving them. 1
It is believed to be now obvious that I have provided a device of the character described, which is simple and easy to operate,
which is cheap to manufacture, and which accomplishes the objects named and other obvious objects in a superior manner, and that it is in also other respects admirably adapted for the purposes for which it is designed.
Iclaimz 3 j 1. An invalid bed comprising a bedstead having a mattress platform, said platform having a centralized opening inwardly of one sidethereof, a series of upholstered slides adapted to be positioned in said opening at the level of saidplatform, each of said slides being adapted to be lowered to a point below said platform to accommodate a bed pan below said platform, a shaft mounted below the platform, a series of levers having one end pivoted on said shaft, a vertical link on each lever connected with a companion slide, a series of notched bars on the bedstead adjacent the free endsofthe levers opposite the shaft, the notches being adapted to be engaged by the free ends of the levers for maintaining the slides in raised and lowered positions, and a frame carried by the bedstead at the said opening for supporting said slides, said shaft, and said notched bars, the outward side of said frame being constructed as a continuation of the side of the bedstead.
2. An invalid bed of the type described comprising a bedstead embodying a mat- Y bedstead below the opening, a plurality of i mattress sections, a plurality of levers piv oted at one end on the frame under the in ward side of the opening,- a link depending from'each section having a brace to maintain it vertical, a pivotal connection between the lower end of the link and an intermediate point of the associated lever, vertical notched bars on the frame at the outward side of the opening adapted to be engaged by the free ends of the levers to selectively maintain the mattress sections in position in said opening in continuation of the mattress or in a position below the mattress. V
3. An invalid bed of the type described comprising a bedstead embodying a mattress support having a mattress thereon, an opening in the middle portion of said mattress support and mattress consisting of a cut away portion extending inwardly from one side edge of the mattress support and mattress to a point beyond the center of the bedstead, a box-like frame surrounding and depending from said opening one side of which forms a continuation of the side of the bedstead below the opening, a plurality of mattress sec tions, a plurality of levers pivoted at one end on the frame under the inward side of the opening, a link depending from each section having a brace to maintain it vertical, a pivotal connection between the lower end of the link and an intermediate point of its associated lever, vertical notched bars on the frame at the outward side of the opening adapted to be engaged by the free ends of the levers to selectively maintain the mattress sections in position in said opening in continuation of the mattress or in a position below the mattress, and strips on the mattress and the frame overlapping the edge of said opening and extended across the spaces between said mattress sections, to form a continuous surface of the mattress and mattress sections when they are in position in said opening.
