This invention relates to shelving construction for show cases or the like uses.
An objectof this invention is toprovide a constructionof the character described having highly improved shelf supporting means which may'readily be assembled and disassembled for supporting shelves at various heights.
'A still further object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact andstrong shelving construction which shall be comparatively inexpens'ivelto manufacture, easy to install, and adjust and yet practical and eflicient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim. 7 In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,

0 Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10
designates shelving construction embodying the invention, for show cases and the like purposes. The shelving 10 comprises a rear, vertical support 11, such as the rear or back ing of a show case or similar article. Attached to the sides of the backing member 11 are a pair of vertical or upright, spaced, parallel channel shaped brackets or supports 12, one only being shown for the purpose of illustration, it being understood that the 1930. brackets 12, are similar and disposed on opposite sides of the backing member. The bracket 12 is formed withside walls 13 perpendicular to the face of' the backing member 11 and with a wall portion 14 interconnecting said walls 13 and extending parallel to the front face of said backing member 11. At spaced points thereon, said wall 14 is provided with openings 15 receiving screws 16 for attaching the brackets to the backing member 11. The front wall 14 of each-0 f the brackets 12 is furthermore provided with a plurality of equally spacedopenings17,-each of said openings having anup'per enlarged preferably circular portion 18, and a downwardly extending vertical constricted slot portion 19. e Mounted on the brackets-12 in the manner hereinafter described, are shelf supporting members 20, the members 20 on .one of the brackets 12 being aligned with the members 20 on the other of said brackets for supporting shelves or plates 21. In" Fig. V1, t-here is shown a pair ofshelf su'pportingmembe'rs 20 forsupporting a pair of she'lves'2l.[ Each? of said members 7 20comprises an angle shaped member 22, preferably made of 'a's-ingle fiat strip of resilient metal and comprises an arm 25 extending-away from the bracket 12 and onwhich theshelf 21 rests, said arm terminating at the front outer end thereof with an upwardly extending end portion *26 for retaining the shelf 21 in position. A-t the rear endthereof, said arm'25 is folded under and back upon itself to form a reduced "5 portion or head'27 of somewhat smaller width than the width or diameter of said circular openings 18. Extending from said portion 27 is a downwardly bent arm-or portion 28 adapted to be disposed flatagainst 1 the front wall 14. The foldedback portion 127 is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed sl-ots-30 adapted to receive the side edges 31 adjacent the slot portions 19 of the openings 17. ,1 s 1 It will now be understood that the folded portion 27 may be inserted within any ofthe openings 18, and the supporting member then pushed downwardly for-engaging the edge portion 31 within the slots 30; whereby 9- I 1 rem-oval of the shelf supporting member may not be effected without again lifting the member 20 for bringing the portion 27 again into alignment with the larger circular opening 18.
The arm 28 of the member22 which is adapted to rest against the front face of the bracket 12 is provided with a tongue or hook 85 preferably stamped therefrom and bent rearw-ardly away from the plane of said arm. Said tongue is so disposed that upon passing said portion 27 thru the circular portion 18 of one of said openings 17, said tongue will be aligned with and hence adapted to pass thru the next lower opening 17. The downwardly projecting portion of the tongue is furthermore so spaced rearwardly from the arm 28 that upon pushing down the shelf supporting member after inserting said tongue and said portion 27 thru a pair of adjacent openings 17 a portion of the wall 14 will be tightly gripped between said tongue and said arm. The shelf supporting membermay in this manner be quickly and rigidly connected to the bracket. Adjacent the lower end of said arm 28, the sameisprovided with an opening 36 for the purpose hereinafter appearing, said opening registering with one of said openings 17. For supporting said arm 25, there is provided a brace member 38 having a flat portion 39 preferably spot-welded to the underside of said arm adjacent the outer end thereof. Said member 38 is formed at the opposite end thereof, with a substantially horizontal screw threaded portion 40, slid-ably extending thru said opening 36 and thru the opening 17 registering or aligned therewith. A nut 42 screwed on said screw threaded portion 40 is adapted toabut the front face of the portion 28 adjacent the bottomend thereof, and servesto limit the downward angular movement of arm 25, and shelf 21. Limited angular movement between arms 25 and 28 of member 22 is permitted since said member is made of resilient metal, the bending taking place about the folded portion 27 thereof, which is in the nature of a flexible joint for said arms. For changing or adjusting the angle of the arm25, and hence of the shelf 21, it is merely necessary to rotate the nut 42 for moving the same longitudinally along said screw threaded portion 40 to the desired position. The weight of the shelf will serve to move the screw threaded portion 41 until .the nut strikes or contacts the lower end of portion Fig.1 illustrates different angular positions of the shelf, the screw threaded end 40 of the upper shelf supporting member 20 extending furtherlthru the opening 36, than does j, the threaded end portion 40 of the lower shelf supporting member.
In Fig. 4, the dotted and full line positions of the screw threaded end 40 illustrates the different adjusted positions thereof.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of 'the invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted asillustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent:
An article of manufacture comprising an angle shaped member comprising a plurality of arms interconnected by'a flexible joint, one of said arms having an opening therein, and a member fixed to the other of said arms having a portion slidably extending thru said opening, and a member mounted on said second member adapted to limit angular movement of said arms toward one another, one of said arms being formed with an integral hook portion bent away from the plane of said arm, a portion of said angle shaped member being folded back on itself, said' portionbeing formed with a pair of slots in opposite edges thereof as and for the purpose described and specified.
