This invention relates to improvements in air inlet valves for internal combustion engines, and which are used to regulate the intake of atmospheric air in the manifold of the engine with the already commingled hydro-carbon oil and air sucked from the carbureter, and which may be applied without the requirement of unusual skill.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent fromv a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of an air inlet valve constructed in accordance with the present invention and applied to a manifold of an internal combustion engine.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the valve.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the valve, adjacent one end thereof.
With reference more in detail to the drawing it will be seen that the valve, inthe embodiment shown, consists of a substantially rectangular casing 5 provided with a chamber 6 opening at one longitudinal side of the casing. A closure plate '7 is provided for the open side of the chamber 6, and is secured in position on the casing through the medium of screws or other fastening element. 8. A gasket is interposed between the closure plate 7 and the approximate side of the casing 5 to extend about the open side of the chamber 6.
Adjacent one end thereofQclosure plate 7 is providedwith an opening 10 constituting an air intake for the chamber 6 andcontrolled by a ballvalve 11. Ball valve 11 is normallyurged to f a closed position, that is in contact with its seat 12 through the'medium of a leaf spring 13 arranged in the chamber 6 and having its free end bearing against the valve 11 and its opposite end anchored to the closure plate 7 by a screw .or other fastening device 14. Tension of the spring 14 on the ball valve 11 may be regulated through the medium of an adjusting screw l5.threaded through the front side of the casing 5 and having its inner end engaged with an intermediate portion of the spring 13.
The casing 5 at its front side is provided with an integral externally threaded nipple 16 that has the bore thereof in alinement with the inlet opening 10. The nipple 16 engages in a threaded opening formed through the outer wall of the manifold 17 of an internal combustion engine as is clearly suggested in Figure 1, the valve is located above the carburete1-,aportion of which is shown in Figure 1 and designated by the reference characterfiB.
Fitted snugly within the chamber 6 against 1 that wall of the casing having on its inner face a longitudinal groove 20 is a filtering screen l9'for filtering the air as it passes into the casing through the opening 10 to exhaust from the easing through the nipple 16 into the manifold 1'7. The operation is thought obvious. Upon each intake strokeof the engine the suction within the manifold will draw the ball valve 11 away from its seat 12 against the action of spring 13, and thus cause air to pass through the opening 10, screen 19 and through the nipple l6 andinto the intakemanifold. Thus it will be seen that as the air mixes with the gas passing through the manifold it will cause the air to be thoroughly mixed with the gas, the airupon meeting the gas breaking up the gas bubbles, causing a greater amount of air to vaporize, thus forming a charge which will have a high power when exploded within the combustion chamber. Further it will be apparent that by mixing the air and gas, the expense of the fuel will be greatly reduced since the air will make it necessary for a limited amount of gas to be used, and at the same time greater power, pick up and acceleration will be attained.
Even though I have herein shown and describedthe preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of further changes, modifications and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is: v
1. As a new article of manufacture, an air intake valve comprising a chamber provided adjacent one end with alined ports, a screen fitting snugly withinthe chamber and extending from end to end thereof, a valve seat about one of said ports, a valve member engageable with the seat, a leaf spring anchored in the chamber on one side of the screen and bearing against said valve member, and an adjusting screw extending through a wall of said chamber, and said screen and bearing against said spring.
2. An airinlet valve for an internal combustion engine comprising a casing'provided on one side thereof with a laterally extending nipple adapted to be tapped into the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, and being also SAMUEL H. LONGFELLOW.
