Application March 18, 1932. Serial No. 599,790
' he claims.- (01. 229-40) This invention relates to a carboard box to be used as a cigar box and for other purposes." Heretoftore the cigar trade has generally employed cedar boxes to preserve the cigar and to give it a certain aroma, but now practically all cigars are wrapped in cellophane or wrappers of other material so that it is not necessary for the cigars to be packed in wooden boxes. A cardboard box is decidedly less expensive to make and serves the purpose as well as a wooden box, but there is an objection to cigar boxes made of cardboard, if the sides, bottom and top are merely fastened together. To overcome the objection noted, as well as to provide a strong, durable, inexpensive and thoroughly eificient structure for the purpose intended is the aim of this invention.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a cigar box body formed of a single piece'of carboard of and sides of the box body.
A further object of the invention is to provide.
a box body from one piece of cardboard or other material scored and cut or slitted in a manner to provide a bottom having spaced side and end edge portionsand foldable interengaging sides having their outer faces flush with such edge 7 portions and with the corners of such body so constructed to form one sharp right angle. To the above ends essentially and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists v of such parts and such combination of parts which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed. In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an inverted plan of the blank from which the box body is formed.
Figure 2is a top plan view of the'blank shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the box body without its covering.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 with the body portion covered throughout its outer face.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 Figure 3. Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 Figure 4. The blank from which the box body is formed preferably consists of cardboard, but it is to be understood that it may consist of any material suitable for the purpose intended. The blank includes a rectangular part which provides the bottom 1 of the box body, a pair of rectangular 80 end folds which form the end walls 2, 3 of the box body and a pair of rectangular side folds which provides the side walls 4, 5 of the box body. The end folds 2, 3 are of less length but of greater width than the side folds and have their end edges 6 formed with rectangular notches 7. The side folds have their end edges provided with rectangular tongues 9 to engage in the notches 7 when the end and side folds are moved at right angles to the part which provides the bottom 1.
The upper or inner face of the blank is provided with an endless score 10, of rectangular form at the point of joinder of the folds with the rectangular part of the blank which provides bottom 1. The end folds have the end terminal portions of the inner lengthwise edges thereof free of connection to and oppose, before being bent to form walls 2, 3 the inner terminal portions of, the end edges of the side folds and by this arrangement when the walls 2, 3 are formed, the walls 5, 6 will be arranged between and have their outer faces flush with the end edges of walls 2, 3 and vice-versa.
The lower or outer face of the blank at the point of joinder thereof which each end fold is provided with a set of endwise aligning spaced incisions of any preferred number and by way of example three are illustrated, and indicated at 11, 12 and 13. Each set of incisions is arranged inwardly of an end part of score 10. The lower or outer face of the blank at the point of joinder thereof with each side fold is provided with a set of endwise aligning spaced incisions of any preferred number. By way of example four. are shown and indicated at 14, 15, 16 and 17 and arranged outwardly of a side part of score 10.
The outer ends of incisions 11, 13 terminate at the end edges of the end folds. The outer ends of incisions 14, 1'7 terminate at the end. edge of the side folds.
Inwardly of each end of the rectangular part of the blank which provides bottom 1, the lower face of such part is formed with a set of spaced endwise aligning incisions 18 and 19, inwardly of each side of such part the lower face of the latter is formed with a set of spaced endwise aligning incisions 20, 21 and 22. The incisions 18 and 19 are disposed transversely and the incisions 20, 21 and 22 longitudinally with respect to said part The incisions 18 and 19 are alternately disposed with respect to incisions 11, 12 and 13. The inclno sions so, 21 and 22 are alternately disposed with respect to incisions 14, 15 and 16. v
The incision 18 is connected to the inner end of incision 11 and one end of incision 12 by a pair of parallel longitudinally extending incisions 23. The inner end of incision 13 and the other end of incision 10 is connected to incision 19 by a pair of longitudinally extending parallel incisions 24. The incisions 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 23 and 24 provide alternately disposed extensions 25 and spaced edge portions at the ends of bottom 1 and spaced edge portions at the bottom of end walls 2, 3.
The inner end of incision 14 and one end of incision 15 are connected to incision 20 by a pair of transversely disposed parallel incisions 26. The other end of incision 15 and one end of incision 16 are connected to incision 21 by a pair of transversely disposed parallel incisions 27. The other end of incision 16 and inner end of incision 17 are connected to incision 22 by a pair of transversely disposed parallel incisions 28. The incisions 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 26, 2'1 and 28 provide alternately disposed extensions 29 and spaced edge portions at the sides of bottom 1 and spaced edge portion at the bottom of side walls 4, 5.
The, incised tongue and notch arrangements as referred to, when the folds are interengaged provide whereby the corners of the box body are constructed to form one sharp right angle. This formation is also maintained with the outer face of the box body covered with any suitable material as indicated at 30.
The incisions 11, 12 and 13 provide a pair of spaced parallel outer sets of transversely extending incisions and with the incisions of each outer set arranged in endwise opposed'spaeed alignment. The incisions 18 and 19 provide a pair of spaced parallel inner sets of transversely extending incisions and with the incisions of each inner set arranged in endwise opposed spaced alignment. The incisions 14, 15, 16 and 17 provide a pair of spaced parallel outer sets of longitudinally extending incisions and with the incisions of each of such sets arranged in endwise opposed spaced arrangement. The incisions 20, 21 and 22 provide a pair of spaced parallel inner sets of longitudinally extending incisions and with the incisions of each of such sets arranged in endwise opposed arrangement.
The incisions 23, 24 provide a pair of spaced parallel rows of spaced pairs of longitudinally disposed spaced incisions. The incisions 26, 27 and 28 provide a pair of spaced parallel rows of spaced pairs of transversely disposed spacedincisions. I
When the folds are interengaged to provide the side and end walls of the box body the top edges of the side walls are arranged below the top edges of the end walls, whereby acover, not shown when closed will seat upon the side walls and be arranged between the end walls. The tongue and notch arrangement provides for the ends of the walls, when set up to overlap each other, but with the end edges of the side walls. flush with the outer faces of the end walls and the end edges of the end walls flush with the outer faces of the side walls. The outer faces of the walls which set up are flush with the edges of the bottom 1.
