2 Claims.
This invention relates to embossed labels fashioned from thin sheet metal or other hard surfaced materials; and it has more particular reference to labels intended for application to personal gift packages or boxes.
My invention is directed toward provisions, in connection with a label of the specified sort, whereby it is possible to inscribe on the label either with ink or pencil, the name, for example, of the person for whom the gift in the package or box is intended. This desiderata I attain as hereinafter fully disclosed, by setting apart from the embossment of the label, a plain smooth-surfaced area, and by attaching to such area, a covering of paper or other non-metallic sheet material capable of receiving written inscriptions.
In the drawing, Fig. I shows the face of my improved label.
Fig. II is a longitudinal sectional view of the label, taken as indicated by the arrows II-II in Fig. I, and drawn to a larger scale with an intermediate portion thereof broken out; and,
Fig. III is a transverse sectional View of the label taken as indicated by the arrows III--III in Fig. I, likewise drawn to a larger scale and with an intermediate portion thereof broken out.
As herein illustrated, my novel label is made from composite sheet stock consisting of a layer 5 of very thin metal or other hard surfaced mate-` rial which is intended to serve as the label face, and a backing 6 of correspondingly thin paper or the like whereof the exposed rear face is coated with adhesive as conventionally represented at r1. The label may be die stamped or otherwise profile cut, and at the same time, or afterwards-as may be found expedient in practise-ornamentally embossed, the embossment including, in the present instance, a raised perimetric edge bead 8, and a floral border design 9 inward of the said edge bead. The area designated by the numeral 10 may contain a suitable poem or legend in embossed letters such as shown (Cl. l1-24) at 11 having reference to the contents of the package or box with which the label is intended to be used.
In order to make it possible to inscribe upon the label with pen or pencil the name of the person to whom the package or box is to be given, I set apart, incident to stamping the label, a plain smooth area 12-which may be of any desired shape, for example, oblong as illustrated-by an outlining bead 13, and attach to such smooth area, a strip 14 of suitable sheet material like paper having a soft surface capable of receiving the ink or pencil inscriptions.
My improved label is obviously susceptible of unlimited variation bothas regards profile configuration and ornamental infield embossment; and I do not therefore Wish to be limited to the specific design which has been selected for convenience of illustration herein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. As a new article of manufacture, an ornamentally embossed label of the character described made from thin hard-surfaced paper.- backed sheet metal the exposed rear face whereof is coated with adhesive, said label having a smooth area in the midst of the ornamental embossment, and a covering of attached paper over said area capable of receiving hand-Written inscriptions in ink or pencil.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a personal label of the type described made from thin hardsurfaced paper-backed metal having the exposed rear face coated with a suitable adhesive, Vsaid label being embossed to include a raised perimetric edge with an inward ornamental bordering design and a legend in raised characters, and an infield smooth area within the border design having' an attached element thereon capable of receiving hand-written inscriptions in ink or pencil.
