IMPROVEMENT IN FISHERMENS APRONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,054, dated July 10, 1877; application filed May 31, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABNER J. TOWER, of

1 Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Barvel or Apron and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 represents a rear view of my improved fishermans apron or barvel; Fig. 2, a similar view of a modification of the same,

' commonly known as the petticoat-apron,

and Fig. 3, a diagram of the body of the garment, shown in Fig. 1.

These garments may be made of any kind of goods, such as cotton, linen, or wool, and with or without a water-proof coating, but are mainly intended for the latter, so as to protect the wearer on board ships, boats, or fish ing-vessels, from wet or slop while engaged in any dirty occupation.

Heretofore these garments have been made open at the shoulders and without sleeves, being simply provided with a strap, which passes over the head and around the hack of the neck, to. support the breast part of the garment. This leaves the sleeves entirely unprotected,.which has been found to be very objectionable, so much so as to be a detriment to their sale and use.

My improvement remedies this trouble, and at the same time leaves the back uncovered, and, consequently, cool-a most desirable feature in hot weather.

The improvement consists in a new construction of the apron, by providing it with sleeves, somewhat in the manner of a coat or shirt, but leaving the back partentirely open.

To enable those skilled in the art to make, construct, and use my invention, I will describe it in detail.

In the style, Fig. 1, the front and sides of the body A are all cut out in one piece, as

represented in Fig.3,it having on each side, at the upper portion of the garment, an opening, a, of suitable shape, out to form the armhole. The two ends 12 and 0, thereby formed, when sewed together, make the sleeve-hole, and into which the sleeve B, of any suitable size and shape, is then secured.

The front of the garment, in. the middle, at top, is cut out to loosely fit the neck, as shown at d.

In the rear, to each of the two ends I) b, is secured a tab of strap, a, by which that portion of the garment is secured around the neck of the wearer, as shown in Fig. 1. This may be efiected by means of a buckle, or, as in the drawing, by a button secured to one strap passing through a hole made in the other, or in any other desirable and known manner.

The garment illustrated in Fig. 2 difl'ers only from the other in that the lower part 0, instead of being open to the bottom, is closed behind in the manner of a petticoat, and, consequently, requires to be made of more than one width, like the garment last referred to,

and is then secured to the upper part D by a waistband, f.

The upper portion D is made precisely like the upper portion of the garment shown in Fig. 1, being provided with sleeves B, and an open back, and secured by tabs e around the neck of the wearer, in precisely the same manner. A

Having described my invention, what I ,claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, a fishermans apron, or petticoat apron, constructed with sleeves B, and an open back, as and for the purpose set forth.
