BABY TOILET CABINET Filed May 15 1933 \r QB X 18 21 H o o 16' a- K dn 0 mag Patented Mar. 27, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to baby toilet cabinets and certain objects of the invention are to provide, as and article of manufacture, a miniature cabinet that is adapted to be used as a child's toilet and which may be readily converted into a chiffonier for use in keeping the childs clothes. Further objects are to provide a toilet cabinet having a top which may be lowered to form a back rest for a child when the device is used as a toilet.
' Still further objects are to provide shelves which are raised out of the way when the device is used as a toilet and lowered to horizontal positions against the arm rests and toilet seat when the device is used as a chiffonier.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing; wherein: Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of the cabinet; Fig. 2 is a view in central vertical section taken substantially on a broken line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the cabinet showing the shelves in the raised position and the top in the lowered position; andiFig. 4 is a view in horizontal section taken on a broken line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, the cabinet comprises a back 5; sides 6 and a bottom '7. A mirror 8 may be connected to the back in any desired manner and project above the top. The front of the cabinet has upright facing strips 9 at its sides and secured to the sides 6. Said strips, together with the side portions of the sides and back, depend a short distance below the bottom and form legs 10 at the four bottom corners 0 of the cabinet.
A toilet seat 11, having the usual opening 12, is secured across the lower portion of the cabinet. A drawer 13 is slidably installed between said seat and the bottom '7, and, as shown in Fig. 2, a
order to prevent a baby from falling off of the seat as will be understood.
An important feature of the invention resides in the top 18 which is hinged to the back 5 at 19 and folds downwardly and inwardly as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Said top is horizontally flush with side top members 20 in the raised or closed position thus providing a flat smooth top as a whole. The front edge of said top is provided with a depending strip or lip 21 which, in the lowered position of the top, rests against the back 5 thus holding its bottom edge outwardly. In this outwardly slanting position the top serves as a back rest for the baby when sitting upon the seat 11 and in this lowered position causes head room to be provided for the baby whose head would ordinarily project through the top opening and above the side top members 20. It will be understood that any desired fastening means may be used for retaining the top 18 and the door 16 in the closed position such as a spring bolt or the like (not shown).
It will now be apparent that I have provided a convenient, ornamental and useful toilet cabinet for babies. The utility of the cabinet is increased by the fact that same may be readily converted into a chiffonier, wherein the babys clothes and other belongings may be kept, particularly when the child has reached an age at which the device is no longer desirable as a toilet. The means whereby this is effected resides in an upper pair of shelves 22 and a lower pair of shelves 23. The upper pair of shelves are hinged or pivoted to the sides 6 of the cabinet along the top edges of the arm rests 15 so that said arm rests serve as fulcrum supports for the shelves when they are lowered to a horizontal position with their outer edges abutting one against the other. In like manner the lower pair of shelves are hinged to the sides 6 along the top edges of the seat 11 which serves as a support therefor when said shelves are likewise lowered to the horizontal position. When said shelves are lowered the device is completely converted into a chiifonier and thereby looses its identity as a toilet.
Having thus described my invention, it being understood that minor changes in its construction and arrangement may be resorted to without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
1. As an article of manufacture a baby toilet cabinet having a toilet seat, arm rests fixed within the cabinet above the seat, a drawer disposed below the seat, a front door hinged to the cabinet, and a top hinged to the cabinet and having a depending lip, said top being proportioned to swing down into the cabinet with its lip resting against the back thereof whereby said top serves as a slanting back rest.
2. As an article of manufacture a baby toilet cabinet having a toilet seat, arm rests fixed within the cabinet above the seat, a pair of shelves hinged to the sides of the cabinet along the top edges of the arm rests whereby said arm rests serve as fulcrum supports for the shelves when they are lowered to a horizontal position with their outer edges abutting against each other, another pair of shelves hinged to the cabinet sides along the top edges of the seat and hinged respectively to the cabinet sides along the top edges of the arm rests and along the top of the seat whereby the cabinet is converted into a chiffonier when the shelves are lowered to a horizontal position.
