, This invention relates to glare shields and has for an object to provide a shield which may be attached to the brim of a hat or cap by novel clips which permit of the shield being easily applied and removed and which are so pivoted to the shield as to permit the shield hanging vertical regardless of whether a straight brim, rolled brim, or brim having a straight portion and rolled side portions, is used.

A further object is to provide a shield which is so shaped as to break the glare of oncoming headlights, which will also reduce reflections from side and street lights, and which will allow a clear vision ahead and does not interfere with the wearing of necessary glasses.

A further object is to provide a shield having a straight edge reinforced with a still? wire and bound with leather, fabric, or other material, the wire permitting of the straight edge being bent to semi-circular form when applied to the hat but springing back to the rectilinear when the device is to be stored, so that the device may be stored flat, the pivoted attaching clips being adapted to be rocked to lie along the front of the shield and against the leather binding strip so as to be out ,of the way and at the same time not touch the material of the shield so that the latter will not be marred in storage.

A further object is to provide a shield which will be formed of a few simple, durable and inexpensiveparts which will not easily get out of order.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

-' Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, the invention is shown to comprise a translucent shield or member 10 which may be formed of any suitable material and may L y The shield is probe colored any suitable color. vided with a straight top edge 11, as best shown in Figure 6, and a curved bottom edge 12, best shown in Figure 5, the side edges 13 being substantially perpendicular to the straight edge. The curved edge 12 at both ends is struck from radii havin their centers disposed within the shield so that the curved ends provide side lobes 14. The intermediate portion of the curved edge 12 is struck from a radius having its center outside of the shield and of considerably greater length than the radii of the end lobes so that the intermediate portion 15 of the shield is of less height than the lobes.

7 As a result of the particular curvature, above described, when the shield is applied to the brim of a hat or cap the side lobes 14 reduce reflections from side lights and street lights, while the narrow central portion 15 of the shield breaks the glare of oncoming headlights andalso permits considerable space below the shield through which clear vision straight ahead may be had, as well as downward vision, as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 1. The narrow central portion of the shield also provides sufiicient space below the shield to permit wearing of necessary glasses and manual adjustment of the glasses by the fingers when necessary without disturbing the shield.

For reinforcing the shield a stiff resilient wire 16 is secured to the straight edge 11 of the shield by means of a binder tape or strip 17 which is looped over the wire and secured at the ends to the front and rear faces of the shield by means of a line of stitching 18. The reinforcing strip 17 may be formed of leather, fabric, or othersuitable material. The wire is preferably resilient wire to permit of the shield being bent arcuate for application to a hat brim. After removal from the hat the wire springs back to the rectilinear so that the shield assumes fiat condition so as to be easilyl05 stored in a small space.

For attaching the shield to hat brims of all types, either straight, rolled, or a combination of straight and rolled, preferably three clips 19 are pivoted to swing on the wire 16, two of the clips,

being disposed near the ends of the wire, while the other clip is disposed at the center of the wire. The binder strip 17 is cut away, as shown at 20 in Figure 4, to permit mounting of these clips.

Each clip comprises a metal loop 21, one end of which is bent to provide an eye 22 which encircles the wire 16 and pivotally mounts the clip. The loop is of suflicient size to receive a hat brim, a straight brim being shown at 22 in Figure 2, and a rolled brim being shown at 23 in Figure 3. The loop swings on the pivot wire to extend horizontal when receiving a fiat portion of a hat brim and also pivots to swing upwardly at an angle to the horizontal when receiving a rolled portion of a hat brim. Although only a straight brim and an upwardly rolled brim are illustrated, it is obvious that the loop will pivot at a downward angle from the horizontal to receive a downwardly rolled brim. In all instances, it will be observed that the shield 10 will hang vertical regardless of the contour of the brim.

A spring lever 24 is pivoted on the free end of the loop 21 and preferably consists of a single length of stiff wire bent upon itself centrally to provide a grip 25, being thence bent obliquely downwardly, as shown at 26 in Figure 2, to pass through an opening 27 in the brim receiving loop 21. The lever is terminally bent rearwardly, as shown at 28, and the ends are bent laterally to provide gudgeons 29 which are received in hinge eyes 30 formed on the free end of the brim receiving loop 21.

The spring lever 24, it will be seen, is thus pivoted eccentrically so that the reversely bent extremity 26-28 will bind upon the brim when the grip 25 is closed to lie flat upon the upper reach of the brim loop 21', as shown in Figure 2, and clamp the brim securely to the loop 21.

As shown by dotted lines in Figure 2, the grip 25 may be rocked forwardly to disengage the bent extremity 2628 from the hat brim and permit removal of the shield.

As best shown by dotted lines in Figure 2, and full lines in Figure 5, when the shield is detached from the hat brim the clips may be rocked on the pivot wire 16 to lie flat along the front face of the shield so that the shield may be packed in flat condition. It will be seen, by referring to Figure 2, that when the clips are rocked to released position the binder strip 17 forms a cushion for the clips and also a spacer to prevent the clips touching the material of the shield and marring the same.

From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of my invention will be fully understood without further explanation.

What is claimed is:

1. A glare shield comprising a translucent shield member, a resilient stiffening wire, a binder strip securing the wire to an edge of the shield member, and a plurality of attaching clips for securing the shield member to a hat brim, each clip comprising a loop pivotally mounted on said wire and adapted to be swung in an arc to extend horizontally and also obliquely above and below the horizontal for receiving straight, rolled, and combination straight and rolled brims, and a lever pivoted eccentrically on the free end of the brim-receiving loop and having a portion extending beyond the pivot and adapted to clamp the brim to the brim-receiving loop and having a portion extending rearwardly of the pivot and forming a grip adapted in closed position tolie fiat upon the upper reach of the brim-receiving loop.

A glare shield comprising a translucent shield member having a straight edge and having a curvilinear edge opposite the straight edge, the curvilinear edge having terminal portions struck from short radii having their centers disposed within the shield member and providing side lobes for intercepting side glare, the intermediate portion of the curvilinear edge being struck from a radius of greater length having its center disposed outside of the shield member whereby the intermediate portion of the shield member is comparatively narrow and provides an arched space below the shield member when the shield member is applied to a hat brim through which space clear vision straight ahead is obtainable and also adjustment of wearers eye glasses permitted, a resilient wire disposed on the straight edge of the shield member, a binder strip encircling the Wire and having its terminals embracing and secured to the shield member, there being a plurality of openings formed in the binder strip, and clips pivoted to the resilient wire within said openings and rockable outwardly to the horizontal and above and below the horizontal for receiving various contours of hat brims, said clips being rockable'on said wire to lie flat along the outer face of the shield member when the shield member is in flat condition for storage, said binder strip forming a cushion and a spacer for engagement with the clips when disposed flat along the shield member to prevent contact of the clips with the shield member.

3. A glare shield comprising a shield member of translucent material, a resilient wire disposed on one edge of the shield member and adapted to normally hold the shield member fiat and also permit of the shield member being bent arcuate for application to a hat brim, and a plurality of hat brim-receiving clips each comprising a loop adapted to receive the hat brim and having one end pivoted to said wire whereby the loop may swing to the horizontal and to inclined positions above and below the horizontal and may also swing to lie fiat along the outer face of the shield member, and manually operatable eccentrically pivoted levers on said loops adapted to engage the hat brim and bind the same to the loops.

4. A glare shield including a shield member, a clip for connecting said member with a hat brim and having an opening, and a lever pivoted upon the clip within the opening and adapted for binding the clip in engagement with the brim.
