Description

April 17, 1934. w. PALLA con/151mm) CARTON AND DISPLAY sum) Filed Feb. 9, 1935 INVENTOR I William Talia ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 11, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT: OFFICE This invention relates to combined containers and/or display devices, and my improvements are directed to the production of a knock-down carton, composed of a single sheet of stiff material, such for example as cardboard, which is adapted, when folded, to contain articles of merchandise for shipment and storage, and which, when opened out,-will form astand or easel for the support and/or display of the articles of merchandise.
The single sheet of material, as formedintoa blank according to my invention, is provided with integral interengaging means whereby, upon folding said blank into the form of a container or carton, said interengaging means may be interfitted to fasten the enclosure.
Also said blank, when openedout, is adapted to be formed into a display stand, for the support and/or exposure of articles of merchandise, the interengaging means with which the blank is provided being adapted to interiit for the purpose of providing an erect structure whose component elements are connected in the creation thereof.
Still further the blank, when formed into a display stand, is caused to present elements thereof adapted for the display of descriptive and. advertising matter relative to the exposed articles of merchandise.
Other features and. advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a view of a blank, shaped accord ing to my invention, for the production of the improved knock-down carton and display device.
Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of the formed carton.
Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a perspective front view of the carton as partly opened out in the process of creating the display device. 7
Fig. 5 is a similar view, with the blank elements more fully unfolded.
Fig. 6 is a rear, perspective view showing the completely formed display device, and
Fig. 7 shows an example of an article of mer-' chandise adapted to be supported on the display device.
In Fig. 1 there appears a blank composed of cardboard or other suitable, still sheet material, said blank having the body or central portion 1, and the opposite side wings 2, 3, each respectively connected with the body portion by a web 4. Also an upper flap 5 is provided, it being connected with the body by a web 6; and a lower flap 7 is connected with the body by a web 8.
While the elements thus referred to are integral in the single blank, the side wings, upper and lower flaps are hinged to be capable of folding, the hinging being provided by forming creases or other weakening lines 9 at the junctions of the body and .webs 4 and 8, and at the junctions of the wings 2, 3, and flaps 5, with their respective webs 4 and 8.
The wings 2, 3 are respectively provided with upper extensions 10, 11, whose upper edges, indicated at 12, are disposed at upwardly outward angles. Also the wing 3 is provided with laterally extended tabs 13, 14, and the wing 2 has V-shaped " slits 15, 16 formed therein, which serve the purpose of producing, respectively, the tongues 1'1,
18. The tabs 13, it are respectively aligned, horizontally, with the tongues 17, 18, and the wing 2 in addition is provided with the laterally disposed, edge notches 13, 23 which are respectively aligned, horizontally, with the tabs 13, 14, and the tongues 17, 18.
It will be observed that the body 1 of the blank is provided with tongues 21, which are out out from the material of said body and are folded upwardly, these tongues being intended to serve 3 as supporting means for articles that are to be displayed, as will be described hereinafter.
The upper extensions 10, 11 of the wings 2, 3
are divided from the main portions thereof by creases or other weakening lines 22, so that said 35 extensions may fold upon said main portions.
The wing 2 is provided with vertical slits 23, 24, the slit 23 lying in the horizontal plane which will be occupied by the tab 14 when the extension 11 is folded down upon the main portion of wing 3.
In the front view of the formed carton, illustrated in Fig. 2, the blank is shown with the webs 4, 8 and 6 folded at right angles to the body 1, the flaps 5 and '7 folded into parallel relation with the body 1, the wing extensions 10, 11 folded respectively upon the wings 2, 3, and the wings folded upon the flaps'5, 7, with the tabs 13, 14 tucked respectively in slits 23, 24, to fasten the package, which may contain articles of merchandise.
In Fig. 4 the carton is shown with the wings 2, 3, unfastened and opened out, and in Fig. 5 the wing extensions 10, 11 have been unfolded, also Now, in creating a display stand or easel the wings, with their webs 4, are to be folded back until their free edges 25 meet in juxtaposition, whereupon the tabs .13, 14 become lodged and localized in notches 19, 20, and then said tabs may respectively be engaged in the slits 15, 16, to
thereby unite the elements of the stand or easel structure, whose supporting base is formed -by the lower edge of body 1 and the lower edges 26 of wings 2, 3.
Since the articles to be displayed are piled against the face of body 1, to which they may be connected, it is desirable to provide a rearward centre of gravity for the stand, and therefore the wings 2, 3 are shown as havingtheir bottom edges 26 formed at a rearwardly upward inclination, in order that the display stand may be rearwardly inclined and thus not liable to tip forwardly.
Suitable means may be provided for connecting the articles of merchandise to the face of body 1, for their display. As shown, the tongues 21 serve to engage a package of the character appearing in Fig. 'l, which is in the nature of a folded box capable of engaging a tongue in a fold thereof.
In the rear view of Fig. 6 the formed display stand or easel is shown in operative position, supporting and displaying articles 2'7, with the flap 7 extended, toeither support articles or to bear descriptive or advertising matter, and with the flap 5 folded back, to lie on the edges 12 of wing extensions 10, 11, said flap 5 presenting ample surface for the exposure of descriptive or advertising matter.
Variations within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.
