Description

E. POINCOT.
MOTORS FOR OPERATING CROSSCUT-SAWS, &c.
No. 195,644. Patented Sept.25,1877.

UNITED STATES ETIENNE POINGOT, OF HOUMA, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS PATENT OFFICE.
RIGHT TO EVELIEN LEBOEUF, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOTORS FOR OPERATING CROSSCUT-SAWS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,644, dated September 25,1877; application filed August 14, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETIENNE PoINooT, a resident of the town of Houma, parish of Terre Bonne, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Motive Power; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a mechanical arrangement through the agency of which various kinds of machinery may be operated with an expenditure of but very little power.
The accompanying drawing represents, at
Figure l, a side elevation, and at Fig. 2 a plan or top view, of my invention with crosscut-saw attachment.
A is a bed-plate, which is either secured to a solid foundation or mounted on wheels, according to the nature of the work for which the machine is to be applied. On each side of this plate, and near the rear end thereof, are erected the stands B B, in the cross-bars c of which is journaled the main shaft D, the latter provided with right-angled cranks e e, which are connected with the operating-levers F F by means of connecting-rods, as shown at l out the center of the bed-plate is bolted or otherwise secureda guide-frame, H,.in which is operated a reciprocating bar, I, furnished on both upper andwlower sides with frictionrollers 'i i, in order to present as little resistance as possible. The rear end of this bar is provided with a side stud, on which is fitted afriction-roller, (shown in dotted lines at 70,) for operating in an eccentric groove, 1, that is cast or cut in one side of the fly'wheel M, so that the rotating of the said wheel may, by reason of the above connection, impart a reciprocating movement to the bar I, from the forward end of which the motion is transmitted to the machine which it is desired to opcrate.
Anovel attachment for operating one or more crosscut-saws is shown on the drawing in connection with the apparatus, the same consisting of a lever, N, the center -of which is pivoted to the forward end of the rod I, as shown at O. The ends of this lever N are somewhat reduced in thickness, so as to operate in the guides P P, the former secured to the bed-plate, and the latter projecting forward from the upper portion of the guidet'rame H, as shown. I
The lever N is made hollow, with a double zigzag rack on each side of its inner surface and an open slot in its face, so as to permit the saw-holder to work from the upper to the lower end thereof. The descent of the saw is automatically regulated by its weight and by reason of a pin, 1, which protrudes on each side of the saw-holder, so as to fit in and follow the zigzag grooves t that are formed by the racks facing one another.
Both ends of the lever N, as well as its upper and lower guides, are perforated, as shown, so that either end of the said lever may be pinned, and from which point a vibrating motion is obtained when the machine is in operation, thus giving to the saw a long sweeping stroke as it first enters a log, and
changing the same to a short and more direct one as it nears the center or greatest diameter of the same.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The improved motive power herein described, the same consisting of a stand, H, reciprocating bar I, and friction-roller k, in combination with a fiy-wheel, M, provided with eccentric groove l, all arranged to operate by means of levers F F, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the frame A, the guides P P and lever N, the latter provided on its inner side with zigzag grooves t, and arranged to operate as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ETIENNE POINOOT.
In presence of- T. H. BOUBGEOIS, E. LEBOEUF.
