Patented June 12, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application January 19, 1929, Serial No. 333,733 Renewed November 18, 1933 2 Claims.
My invention relates to closures, and more particularly to closures of the bayonet joint type, and the principal object of my invention is to provide a newi and improved closure of this type.
5 In the drawing accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume. In the draw- Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of this illustrative embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the cap apart,
Figure 3 is a central vertical section taken on the lines 3 3 of Figure 1, while Figure 4 is a central vertical section taken on the lines 4-4 of Figure 1.
The embodiment of my invention herein shown comprises a closure member 11 having an inner cap 12 and an outer cap 13 tting over the inner cap 12.
The inner cap` 12 has a top section 14 consisting of an outer annular portion 15, an inner annular portion 16 lying in a plane parallel to but slightly above the plane of the outer annular portion 15, a uniting portion 17 interposed between the outer annular portion 15 and the inner annular portion 16 uniting the inner periphery of the outer annular portion 15 with the outer periphery of the inner annular portion 16, and a generally spherical upwardly convexed portion 18 provided centrally with a vent 32 and closing the opening within the inner annular portion 16, and the inner cap 12 is provided with a skirt section 19 formed in a single piece with the top section 14 and depending from the outer periphery of the outer section 15 of the top section 14.
A locking member 20 is provided comprising a depressed central section 21, provided centrally with a vent 35 and a pair of arm sections 22 extending outwardly 'from the depressed central section 21 into position to engage with cooperating locking means of the bayonet joint type carried by the tube on which the closure is 45. to be employed. Securing sections 23 are provided extending from the central depressed section 21 intermediate the arm sections 22, upwardly as portions 24 generally perpendicular to the centrally depressed section 21, and then outwardly as portions 25 generally parallel to the centrally depressed section 2l and to the inner annular portion 16 oi the top section 14 of the inner cap 12 substantially into engagement with the shoulder formed by the annular uniting portion 17 of the inner cap 12. An intermediate disc member 26 is interposed between the outwardly extending portions 25 of the securing sections 23 of the locking member 20 and the inner annular portion 16 of the inner cap 12, and is secured to the lower surface of the inner annu- T lar portion 16 of the inner cap 12 by rivets 27, and is provided centrally with a vent 33.
The outer cap 13 oi the closure member 11 comprises a skirt section 28 resiliently and frictionally grasping the outer surface of the skirt section 19 oi the inner cap 12, and an upwardly convexed cover 29 joined to the skirt section 23 by an outwardly extending scroll 30 formed integrally with the cover 29 and the skirt section 23, provided with indentations 31 facilitating operation and enhancing appearance, and provided centrally with a vent 34.
From the above it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that I have provided a new and improved closure of the bayonet joint type comprising an inner cap 12 supporting the locking means and of the form and appearance preferable from the viewpoint of function, and an outer cap 13 readily adaptable to be made in an attractive design entirely independent of the design or shape of the inner cap 12, accordingly it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that I have provided a closure accomplishing at least the principal object of my invention. At the same time it also will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the particular embodiment of my invention herein shown and described possesses advantages and uses other than those specifically pointed out or suggested herein, and also that this particular embodiment of my invention herein shown may be variously changed, modified, or used, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacriiicing the advantages thereof. It therefore will be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim:
1. A closure for use with a tube provided with locking means of the bayonet joint type, comprising: an inner cap having a depending circumierential flange adapted to embrace the walls of said tube in juxtaposition and having an unattractive outer surface, and operable to close the end ci said tube, and provided with cooperating bayonet type locking means for securing said inner cap to said tube; and a readily attachable outer cap completely enclosing said inner cap and having a iiange 'resiliently and frictionally gripping said inner cap, and providing an attractive cap shaped independently of the shape of said tractive outer surface, and operable to close the` end of said tube, and having a centrally arranged recess opening downwardly; a substantially diametrically extending gripping member having upwardly and laterally extending ear portions onV opposite sides of the median line of said gripping member secured to said inner cap within said recess, the opposite ends of said gripping member being adapted to engage a bayonet slot in said tube; a readily attachable outer cap completely enclosing said inner cap and having a flange resiliently and frictionally gripping said inner cap, and providing an attractive cap shaped independently ,ofv the shape of said inner cap, and having a bulged portion spaced from said inner capg'andtextending laterally beyond said gripping flange, said bulged portion being provided with ringer holds independent of the shape of said inner cap, whereby manipulation of said outer cap effects operative movements of said inner cap.
